  • An analytical solution is presented for the conduction-dominated solidification of a binary mixture in a semi-infinite medium. The present approach differs from that of other solution by these four characteristics. (1) Solid fraction is determined from the phase diagram, (2) thermophysical properties in mushy zone are weighted according to the local solid fraction, (3) non-equilibrium solidification can be simulated and (4) the cooling condition of under-eutectic temperature can be simulated. Up to now, almost all analyses are based on the assumption of constant properties in mushy zone and solid fraction linearly with temperature or length. The validation for these assumptions, however, shows that serious error is found except some special cases. The influence of microscopic model on the macroscopic temperature profile is very small and can be ignored. But the solid fraction and average solid concentration which directly influence the quality of materials are drastically changed by the microscopic models. An approximate solution using the method of weighted residuals is also introduced and shows good agreement with the analytical solution. All calculations are performed for NH$_{4}$Cl-H$_{2}$O and Al-Cu system.

  • To analyze a cotG-based Bacillus subtilis spore display system directly, $GFP_{UV}$ was expressed on the surface of Bacillus subtilis spores. When $GFP_{UV}$ was fused to the C-terminal of the cotG structural gene and expressed, the existence of a $CotG-GFP_{UV}$ fusion protein on the B. subtilis spore was confirmed by flow cytometry confocal microscopic analysis. When the cotG anchoring motif was deleted, no fluorescence emission was observed under flow cytometry and confocal microscopic analysis from the purified spore, confirming the essential role of CotG as an anchoring motif. This $GFP_{UV}$ displaying spore might be used for another signaling application triggered by intracellular or extracellular stimuli.

  • Localized corrosion behavior of Ni-based Inconel 718 alloy was investigated by electrochemical anodic polarization techniques in NACE TM 0177 A solution of 5 wt% NaCl + 0.5 wt% acetic acid at room temperature. After the solution heat treated at 1080 ℃ for 2.5 h, Inconel 718 was age-hardened at 780 ℃ for 8 h. The microstructure of the alloy surface was investigated by optical microscopic or scanning electron microscopic technique. The austenitic phase with the presence of metal carbides was observed on the surface of Inconel 718. Metal-carbides such as Nb-Mo and Ti-carbide with diameters of approximately 10 and 3 ㎛, respectively, were formed in Inconel 718. Anodic polarization results revealed that localized corrosion was observed at the interface between austenitic phase of a substrate and metal carbides. Difference in electrochemical property between a metal carbide and an austenitic substrate could provide an initiation site for localized corrosion of Inconel 718 surface.

  • It is difficult to combine oriental and western medicine. Each medicine has a different academic background, perspective on the world, and studying methodology. The claim that two paradigms can not be combined is not obtained from an actual verification, but this means it is so hard to combine two medicines having different backgrounds. The amalgamation of oriental and western medicine should be phased in on the basis of the continuous reciprocal understanding and commitment. First, the strength and weakness of each medicine over the treatment and research are required to be identified. Then, a few complementary areas can be chosen enabling a trial of fusion on a small scale. A cycle of problem solving and a new research can be set by analyzing research results obtained through the implementation over a period of time. In other words, the researchers of oriental and western medicine should repeat a continuous and gradual complementary research process by identifying issues to be improved and complemented through a consensus. Once the methodology obtained through the process of problem solving and proficient implementation is established in a stable condition, a method to widen the fusion area by expanding the operating area and implementation method can be chosen. However, the integral system of oriental medicine shouldn't be substituted by mechanical idea or reductionism. What should be done primarily for oriental medicine is to objectify things through quantification. In particular, the oriental treatment should accept the microscopic diagnosis to determine the structure and observe the biochemical change.

  • Several practical methods for accelerating the depletion calculation in a GPU-based Monte Carlo (MC) code PRAGMA are presented including the multilevel spectral collapse method and the vectorized Chebyshev rational approximation method (CRAM). Since the generation of microscopic reaction rates for each nuclide needed for the construction of the depletion matrix of the Bateman equation requires either enormous memory access or tremendous physical memory, both of which are quite burdensome on GPUs, a new method called multilevel spectral collapse is proposed which combines two types of spectra to generate microscopic reaction rates: an ultrafine spectrum for an entire fuel pin and coarser spectra for each depletion region. Errors in reaction rates introduced by this method are mitigated by a hybrid usage of direct online reaction rate tallies for several important fissile nuclides. The linear system to appear in the solution process adopting the CRAM is solved by the Gauss-Seidel method which can be easily vectorized on GPUs. With the accelerated depletion methods, only about 10% of MC calculation time is consumed for depletion, so an accurate full core cycle depletion calculation for a commercial power reactor (BEAVRS) can be done in 16 h with 24 consumer-grade GPUs.

  • The test method on the Type II high-pressure hydrogen storage tanks made of the metal wire hoop winding is a complex and high risk. Also closeup on the tank being test is difficult. In this study, we studied a mechanical test method for a high-pressure hydrogen tanks. This method must be simple, risk-free and possible to observe the change in microscopic behavior of a metal wire on a liner. As the results, it was possible to observe the microscopic behavior on the metal wire by the mechanical test method. Also, a simple and risk-free test was possible compared to the conventional test method for high pressure hydrogen tanks.

  • Yellow goosefish (Lophius litulon) is one of the important commercial fisheries target species in Korea, and commonly consumed as braised or stew. The microsporidian Spraguea is known to infect the nervous system of lophiid fish, forming numerous visible whitish xenomas. This parasite is commonly found in lophiid fish worldwide, but there is no information on the infection status of this parasite in Korea. We obtained commercially available chopped packs of lophiid fish from several fish markets and investigated their prevalence of infection. The isolated xenomas were crushed and purified as mature spore suspension. Microscopic observation and PCR were conducted to visualize and identify them. The host fish was also identified by DNA bar cording analysis. All the specimens were heavily infected and microscopic observation with Giemsa or Chromotrope 2R stain revealed tiny oval shapes of typical microsporidian spores. PCR analysis targeting the partial SSU rDNA showed that our specimen belongs to the genus Spraguea clade. But clear identification at the species level was not possible, due to the insufficient information of gene sequences available in GenBank. In addition, all of our host fish specimen was identified as yellow goosefish. This is the first report of a microsporidian parasite Spraguea infection in yellow goosefish from Korea.

  • Background/Aims: Endoscopic visualization of the microscopic anatomy can facilitate the real-time diagnosis of pancreatobiliary disorders and provide guidance for treatment. This study aimed to review the technique, image classification, and diagnostic performance of confocal laser endomicroscopy (CLE). Methods: We conducted a systematic review of CLE in pancreatic and biliary ducts of humans, and have provided a narrative of the technique, image classification, diagnostic performance, ongoing research, and limitations. Results: Probe-based CLE differentiates malignant from benign biliary strictures (sensitivity, ≥89%; specificity, ≥61%). Needle-based CLE differentiates mucinous from non-mucinous pancreatic cysts (sensitivity, 59%; specificity, ≥94%) and identifies dysplasia. Pancreatitis may develop in 2-7% of pancreatic cyst cases. Needle-based CLE has potential applications in adenocarcinoma, neuroendocrine tumors, and pancreatitis (chronic or autoimmune). Costs, catheter lifespan, endoscopist training, and interobserver variability are challenges for routine utilization. Conclusions: CLE reveals microscopic pancreatobiliary system anatomy with adequate specificity and sensitivity. Reducing costs and simplifying image interpretation will promote utilization by advanced endoscopists.

  • Measurement of supersaturation is important in crystallization processes, because it is one of key factors to control crystal size distribution and shape determining product quality. A monitoring system of the supersaturation using a quartz crystal sensor is applied to the supersaturation measurement. From the variation of resonant frequency, the beginning of the formation of salt crystal on the sensor surface is detected while the sensor is directly cooled down. The degree of supersaturation is computed from the solubility difference at the temperatures of the salt solution and the sensor. The performance of the propsed system of the supersaturation measurement is examined by applying the system to the crystallization of three different salt solutions. The experimental outcome compared with eye observation result and photographic analysis indicates that the proposed system is effective and useful to determine the supersaturation in the crystallization process. In addition, the microscopic monitoring of the initial stage crystallization is available with the sensor system.

  • The crystal structure of nano-crystalline, $BaTiO_3$, with the average particle size of 100 nm was investigated using electron diffraction techniques. We characterized the precession electron diffraction system and then carried out the structure determination using precession electron diffraction and conventional selected area electron diffraction. As a result, it was revealed that $BaTiO_3$ nano-crystalline exist as a mixture of tetragonal structure and cubic structure by precession electron diffraction technique. In addition, it could be turned out that $BaTiO_3$ nano-crystalline is a core-shell structure consisted of a tetragonal phased core and a cubic phased surface layer by theoretical calculation. The thickness of the cubic surface layer was approximately 8.5 nm and the lattice parameters of cubic and tetragonal phases were a=3.999${\AA}$ and a=3.999${\AA}$, c=4.022${\AA}$, respectively. Finally, it is expected that precession electron diffraction is more useful technique for structure determination of complicated nano-crystalline materials because of its higher spatial resolution and minimization of dynamical scattering effect.
