To provide the various machining materials with excellent quality and dimensional accuracy, high -speed machining is very useful tool as one of the most effective rapid manufacturing processes. However, high-speed machining is not suitable for microscale thin-walled structures because of the lack of the structure stiffness to resist the cutting force. A new method which is able to make a very thin-walled structure rapidly will be proposed in this paper. This method is composed two processes, high-speed machining and filling process. Strong workholding force comes out of the solidification of filling materials. Low-melting point metal alloys are used in order to minimize the thermal effect during phase change and to hold arbitrary shape thin-walled structures quickly during high-speed machining. To verify the usefulness of this method, we will show some applications, for examples thin -wall cylinders and hemispherical shells, and compare the experimental results to analyze the dimensional accuracy of typical parts of the structures.
Polyphosphate (polyP) plays diverse physiological functions in prokaryotes and eukaryotes, but most of their detailed mechanisms are still obscure. Here, we show that deletion of polyphosphate kinase (PPK), the principal enzyme responsible for synthesis of polyP, resulted in augmented expression of cAMP receptor protein (CRP) and rpoS and lowered $H_2O_2$ sensitivity in Salmonella Typhimurium ATCC14028. The binding of cAMP-CRP complex to rpoS promoter and further stimulation of its transcription were proved through electrophoretic mobility shift assay, lacZ fusion, and exogenous cAMP addition, respectively. The rpoS expression increased in cpdA (cAMP phosphodiesterase coding gene) mutant, further suggesting that cAMP-CRP upregulated rpoS expression. These results demonstrate that PPK affects oxidative stress response by modulating crp and rpoS expression in S. Typhimurium.
The induced-charge electroosmosis (ICEO) is a kind of electroosmotic flow which is generated by the electrical charge induced by an externally-applied electric field. That kind of electrokinetic phenomenon provides a nonmechanical technique to handle microscale flows and particles. In this work, we report that the ICEO-like flow is observed around two kinds of circular-cylindrical rod submerged in a dielectric liquid. The conductivity of the solution is varied by adding a surfactant. The flow field is visualized by the PIV method, and average flow speed shows a remarkable dependence on electrical input frequency. Interestingly, the characteristics of the flow are quite different from the conventional ICEO with respect to the flow direction and the locations of center of vortices.

High-speed machining is a very useful tool and one of the most effective rapid manufacturing processes. This study sought to produce various high-speed machining materials with excellent quality and dimensional accuracy. However, high-speed machining is not suitable for microscale thin-walled structures because the structure stiffness lacks the ability to resist the cutting force. This paper proposes a new method that is able to rapidly produce very thin-walled structures. This method consists of high-speed machining followed by filling. A strong work-holding force results from the solidification of the filling materials. Low-melting point metal alloys are used to minimize the thermal effects during phase changes and to hold the arbitrarily shaped thin-walled structures quickly during the high-speed machining. We demonstrate some applications, such as thin-walled cylinders and hemispherical shells, to verify the usefulness of this method and compare the analyzed dimensional accuracy of typical parts of the structures.

UV laser micromachining are generally used to create microstructures for micro product through a sequence of lithography-based photopatterning steps. However, the micromachining process is not suitable for the rapid realization of complex microscale 3D product because it depends on worker experiences, excessive cost and time to make many masks. In this paper, the more effective micro rapid manufacturing process, which is developed upon the base of laser micromachining. is proposed to fabricate micro products directly using UV laser ablation and phase change filling. The filling process is useful to hold the micro product during the next ablation step. The proposed micro rapid manufacturing process is also proven experimentally that enables to fabricate the 3D microscale products of UV sensitive polymer from 3D CAD data to functional micro parts.

Atomic force microscope(AFM) techniques are increasingly used for tribological studies of engineering surfaces at scales ranging from atomic and molecular to microscale. AFM with suitable tips is being used for nanofabrication nanomachining purposes. In this paper, machining characteristics of silicon have been investigated by nano indentation and nano scratch. Mechanisms of material removal on the microscale are studied and the Taguchi method is introduced to acquire optimum parameters for nanomachining. This work shows effectiveness of the Taguchi method in nanomachining. Also, Acoustic Emission(AE) is introduced for the monitoring of nanomachining.
Bentones from Korean bentonites were first prepared by reacting bentonites with high molecular weight imidazolines. The cation exchange capacity of bentonites was found more than 100meq/100g sample. Greases were then prepared by dispersing bentones into a lubricating oil and milling through a three-roll dispersion mill. Consistency in microscale, oxidation stability (static), water resistance, and wear property of the greases were tested by the ASTM methods, and good experimental results were obtained.
Nucleate pool boiling experiments with constant wall temperature were performed using pure R1l3 for subcooled, saturated, and superheated pool conditions. A microscale heater array and Wheatstone bridge circuits were used to maintain the constant wall temperature and to measure the instantaneous heat flow rate accurately with high temporal and spatial resolutions. Images of bubble growth were taken at 5,000 frames per second using a high-speed CCD camera synchronized with the heat flow rate measurements. The bubble geometry was obtained from the captured bubble images. The effect of the pool conditions on the bubble growth behavior was analyzed using dimensionless parameters for the initial and thermal growth regions. The effect of the pool conditions on the heat flow rate behavior was also examined. This study will provide good experimental data with precise constant wall temperature boundary condition for such works.
In this paper, a three-phase AC-DC high step-up converter is developed for application to microscale wind-power generation systems. Such an AC-DC boost converter prossessess the property of the single-switch high step-up DC-DC structure. For power factor correction, the advanced half-stage converter is operated under the discontinuous conduction mode (DCM). Simulatanously, to achieve a high step-up voltage gain, the back half-stage functions in the continuous conduction mode (CCM). A high voltage gain can be obtained by use of an output-capacitor mass and a coupled inductor. Compared to the output voltage, the voltage stress is decreased on the switch. To lessen the conducting losses, a low rated voltage and small conductive resistance MOSFETs are adopted. In addition, the coupled inductor retrieves the leakage-inductor energy. The operation principle and steady-state behavior are analyzed, and a prototype hardware circuit is realized to verify the performance of the proposed converter.
