Gas turbines operating in dusty or sandy environment polluted with micron-sized solid particles are highly prone to blade surface erosion damage in compressor stages and molten sand attack in the hot-sections of turbine stages. Commercial/Military fixed-wing aircraft engines and helicopter engines often have to operate over sandy terrains in the middle eastern countries or in volcanic zones; on the other hand gas turbines in marine applications are subjected to salt spray, while the coal-burning industrial power generation turbines are subjected to fly-ash. The presence of solid particles in the working fluid medium has an adverse effect on the durability of these engines as well as performance. Typical turbine blade damages include blade coating wear, sand glazing, Calcia-Magnesia-Alumina-Silicate (CMAS) attack, oxidation, plugged cooling holes, all of which can cause rapid performance deterioration including loss of aircraft. The focus of this research work is to simulate particle-surface kinetic interaction on typical turbomachinery material targets using non-linear dynamic impact analysis. The objective of this research is to understand the interfacial kinetic behaviors that can provide insights into the physics of particle interactions and to enable leap ahead technologies in material choices and to develop sand-phobic thermal barrier coatings for turbine blades. This paper outlines the research efforts at the U.S Army Research Laboratory to come up with novel turbine blade multifunctional protective coatings that are sand-phobic, sand impact wear resistant, as well as have very low thermal conductivity for improved performance of future gas turbine engines. The research scope includes development of protective coatings for both nickel-based super alloys and ceramic matrix composites.

The line width of circuits in semiconductor devices continues to decrease down to a few nanometers. Since nanoparticles attached to the patterned wafer surface may cause malfunction of the devices, it is crucial to remove the contaminant nanoparticles. Physical cleaning that utilizes momentum of liquid for detaching solid nanoparticles has recently been tested in place of the conventional chemical method. Dropwise impaction has been employed to increase the removal efficiency with expectation of more efficient momentum exchange. To date, most of relevant studies have been focused on drop spreading behavior on a horizontal surface in terms of maximum spreading diameters and average spreading velocity of drop. More important is the local liquid velocity at the position of nanoparticle, very near the surface, rather than the vertical average value. In addition, there are very scarce existing studies dealing with microdroplet impaction that may be desirable for minimizing pattern demage of the wafer. In this study, we investigated the local velocity distribution in spreading liquid film under various impaction conditions through the CFD simulation. Combining the numerical results with the particle removal model, we estimated an effective cleaning diameter (ECD), which is a measure of the particle removal capacity of a single drop, and presented the predicted ECD data as a function of droplet's velocity and diameter particularly when the droplets are microns in diameter.

The removal of tiny particles adhered to surfaces is one of the crucial prerequisite for a further increase in IC fabrication, large area displays and for the process in nanotechnology. Various cleaning techniques (wet chemical cleaning, scrubbing, pressurized jets and ultrasonic processes) currently used to clean critical surfaces are limited to removal of micrometer-sized particles. Therefore the removal of sub-micron sized particles from silicon wafers is of great interest. For this purpose various cleaning methods are currently under investigation. In this paper, we report on experiments on the cleaning effect of 100nm sized fluorescence particles on silicon wafer using the plasma shockwave occurred by femtosecond laser. The plasma shockwave is main effect of femtosecond laser cleaning to remove particles. The removal efficiency was dependent on the gap distance between laser focus and surface but in some case surface was damaged by excessive laser intensity. These experiments demonstrate the feasibility of femtosecond laser cleaning using 100nm size fluorescence particles on wafer.
Paclitaxel is a well known anticancer agent and has been a pharmaceutical challenge because of its extremely poor water-solubility and susceptibility to the p-glycoprotein (p-gp)-mediated efflux in multi-drug resistant (MDR) cancer cells. Tributyrin (TB), a triglyceride with relatively short fatty acid chains, was chosen as solubilizing vehicle for paclitaxel based on the solubility study (26.6 mg/mL). Tributyrin (10%) o/w emulsion containing paclitaxel (5%), egg phosphatidylcholine (5%) and pegylated phospholipid (0.5%) was prepared by high pressure homogenization to obtain submicron-sized emulsion. The mean particle size of the resultant TB emulsion was 395.5 nm. Paclitaxel in TB emulsion showed higher anticancer activity against human breast cancer cell line, MCF-7, than free form delivered in DMSO solution. On the other hand, its anticancer activity was significantly reduced in MCF-7/ADR, a MDR variant cancer cell line of MCF-7, and recovered by the presence of verapamil, suggesting of the susceptibility to the p-gp mediated efflux even though paclitaxel was encapsulated into emulsion. The TB emulsion showed great potential as a promising vehicle for water-insoluble anticancer agent, paclitaxel.
Optimized volume production of nanoscale phosphor powders synthesized by radio frequency (RF) plasma process was developed for the application to plasma display panels. The nano powders were synthesized by feeding the both solid and liquid type precursors, and nanoparticle phosphors were characterized in terms of particle size, shape, and photoluminescence (PL) intensities. Computer simulation was performed in advance to determine the process parameters, and nano phosphors were evaluated by comparing with current commercial micron-sized phosphor powders. Practical feeding of both solid and liquid type precursor was proved to be effective for volume production. The developed process showed a potential as a production method for red, blue and green phosphor although the PL intensity still needs further improvement.
Ag-Cu alloy nano powders were fabricated by the electrical explosion of Cu-plated Ag wires. Ag wires of 0.2mm diameter was electroplated to final diameter of 0.220 mm and 0.307 mm which correspond to Ag-27Cu and Ag-68Cu alloy. The explosion product consisted of equilibrium phases of ${\alpha}-Ag$ and ${\beta}$-Cu. The particle size of Ag-Cu nano powders were 44 nm and 70 nm for 0.220 mm and 0.307 mm wires, respectively. The Ag-Cu nano powders contained less Cu than average value due to higher sublimation energy compared to that of Ag. As a result, micron-sized spherical particles formed from liquid droplets contained higher Cu content.

We systematically investigated the optical properties of sub-micron sized methylammonium lead tribromide ($CH_3NH_3PbBr_3$) cubes in the range of 100 to 700 nm, which were prepared by a surfactant-free precipitation method. We found that despite the strong absorbance, their photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) is very low as 0.009~0.011 % for whole range of sizes. Surfactant-free synthesis approach results in nanocubes that has no surface passivating reagents (e.g. surfactants) on their surface. As-prepared particles contain a large number of surface defects that may cause the low PLQY. The role of the surface defects were investigated in their photoluminescence decay process, which can be correlated with the particle size. Larger particles are characterized by a slower decay rate compared to smaller particles due to a large number of surface defects in the smaller particles that trap more excitons in the fluorescence decay process. These experimental results provide new insights into the fundamental relationship between surface state and optical properties.
In this study, Monte Carlo (MC) simulation is conducted with recurrence relation to study the effect of SiO2 with different particle size and their roles in enhancing the ionic conductivity and lithium transference number of PMMA composite polymer electrolytes (CPEs). The MC simulated ionic conductivity is verified with the measurements from Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). Then, the lithium transference number of CPEs is calculated using recurrence relation with the MC simulated current density and the reference transference number obtained. Incorporation of micron-size SiO2 (≤10 ㎛) fillers into the mixture improves the ionic conductivity from 8.60×10-5 S/cm to 2.35×10-4 S/cm. The improvement is also observed on the lithium transference number, where it increases from 0.088 to 0.3757. Furthermore, the addition of nano-sized SiO2 (≤12 nm) fillers further increases the ionic conductivity up towards 3.79×10-4 S/cm and lithium transference number of 0.4105. The large effective surface area of SiO2 fillers is responsible for the improvement in ionic conductivity and the transference number in PMMA composite polymer electrolytes.
In preparing micron-sized monodisperse polystyrene beads by dispersion polymerization, the conversion, and the particle size and its distribution were affected by the reaction temperature, concentration of the monomer, solvent and initiator, molecular weight and concentration of the steric stabilizer, amount of oxygen existing in the reactor, and an appropriate combination of these starting materials. Ethanol as a dispersing agent, styrene as a monomer, PVP as a steric stabilizer, AIBN as an initiator, DVB as a cross-linking agent and toluene as a co-solvent were the basic materials for the synthesis. The reaction rate and the conversion were increased with the reaction temperature and the amount of DVB from 1 to 4%, and the conversion was saturated after 10 hours of the reaction time. The optimum reaction recipe for the preparation of the monodisperse PS beads was 25% styrene monomer, 0.5% DVB, 25% toluene, 10-15% PVP, and 2 and 4% AIBN, thereby, 3.9~4 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and 3.4~9.3 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of polystyrene beads, respectively, were successfully synthesized.

Particle size reduction is an important step in many technological operations. The process itself is defined as the mechanical breakdown of solids into smaller particles to increase the surface area and induce defects in solids, which are needed for subsequent operations such as chemical reactions. To fabricate nano-sized particles, several tens to hundreds of micron size ceramic beads, formed through high energy milling process, are required. To minimize the contamination effects during high-energy milling, the mechanical properties of zirconia beads are very important. Generally, the mechanical properties of $Y_2O_3$ stabilized tetragonal zirconia beads are closely related to the mechanism of phase change from tetragonal to monoclinic phase via external mechanical forces. Therefore, $Y_2O_3$ distribution in the sintered zirconia beads must also be closely related with the mechanical properties of the beads. In this work, commercially available $100{\mu}m-size$ beads are analyzed from the point of view of microstructure, composition homogeneity (especially for $Y_2O_3$), mechanical properties, and attrition rate.
