Microfloras of otitis externa and normal external ear canals in dogs (개에서 외이도염 및 정상외이도에서 분리한 세균총에 대한 연구)

  • This study was conducted to examine the outbreak rate and the causative agents of otitis externa in 26 dogs (49 ears ; 23 dogs = bilateral, 3 dogs = unilateral), and the normal microfloras of external ear canal in 68 dogs(133 ears ; 65 dogs = bilateral, 3 dogs = unilateral ) in Taegu, 1997. The breed, living environment, sex, age and season distribution of otitic dogs were as follows : Dogs with erect and hairy ears(42.3%), pendulous and hairy ears(38.5%), indoor(92.3%), female(65.4%) and below one year old(38.5%) were more prevalent. According to season, otitis externa was mainly occurred between July and October. The major causative agents of canine otitis externa were Malassezia pachydermatis (32.7%), Staphylococcus aureus (26.5%) and S intermedius (16.3%). In the microorganism isolated 39 otitic ear canals, single infection was 53.8% and mixed infection was 46.2%. The normal microfloras of canine external ear canal were fungi including M pachydermatis, Aspergillus spp, Microsporum canis, Alternaria spp, Verticillium spp and Yeast, and bacteria including Staphylococcus spp(10 species including S xylosus), Bacillus spp, Corynebacterium spp, Listeria spp, Actinomyces pyogenes and Escherichia coli. No growth was 34.6%.

Antibacterial Activity of Acanthoic acid Isolated from Acanthopanax koreanum against Oral and Skin Microfloras

  • The (-)-pimara-9 (11), 15-dien-19-oic acid, acanthoic acid was extracted from the roots of Acanthopanax koreanum using bioassay-guided isolation of a MeOH extract. Acanthoic acid was assayed against Streptococcus mutans and Staphylococcus epidermidis causing dental caries and opportunistic pathogen. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of acanthoic acid against Streptococcus mutans and Staphylococcus epidermidis was 2 and 4 ${\mu}g/mL$, respectively, which was much lower than those of other natural antimicrobial agents such as 8 ${\mu}g/mL$ of tanshinone IIA. Acanthoic acid also significantly inhibited the growth of other cariogenic bacteria such as Streptococcus sobrinus and Streptococcus sanguis, and Streptococcus grodenii in the MIC range of 4${\sim}$32 ${\mu}g/mL$. Our findings suggest that acanthoic acid could be employed as a potential antibacterial agent for preventing dental caries and skin infections.

The Effects of Probiotic and Antibiotic on the Performance of the Chickens and Population of Intestinal Microfloras (생균제와 항생제가 병아리의 성장과 장내세균총에 미치는 영향)

  • In order to study the effects of probiotic and antibiotic on the performance of the chickens and the population of microfloras in the intestine, a feeding trial was conducted for a period of seven weeks. One hundred eighty hatched male chickens of layer attain were fed one of the following three experimental diets; nonmedicated control, antibiotic supplemented diet(virginiamycin 5 ppm) and probiotic supplemented diet. Birds fed probiotic supplemented diets were heavier and consumed more feed than those fed other diets but the differences were not statistically significant. Antibiotic supplemented group showed significantly (P〈0.01) better feed efficiency than other groups. Availabilities of dry matter, crude protein, crude fat, NFE, Ca and P were not significantly different between treatments but antibiotic supplemented group showed significantly(P〈0.05) lower availability of crude fiber than other groups. The weight of small intestine of the birds fed antibiotic supplemented diet was significantly (P〈0.05) lighter than those of other groups. The population of Bacillus subtilis and Lactobacilli in the intestinal content of the birds fed probiotic supplemented diet were significantly (P〈0.01) larger than those of other groups. On the other hand, the population of Coliforms in the probiotic group were significantly (P〈0.01) smaller than those in the nonmedicated control group.

  • The purpose of this study is screening of microfloras involved in hydrolysis of seaweed tenella, seaweed fusiforme and green laver. This is a part of studies on the hydrolysis of seaweed using microorganisms. First, about two hundred microflora samples were obtained from mountain, rice field, dry field, sea, seaside and fish market in the vicinity of Yeosu. Thirty-three microflora samples were screened from the destruction of tissue in sea tangle and sea mustard. It was sufficient that results of the naked eye observation were obtained at eight microflora samples as a feces of bull, a decayed pine tree, a soil of dry field, the mud of the banks in a rice field, the water of a ditch in a rice field, the weed of the banks in a rice field, the water in a rice field and leaved in the air. Above all, extraction rate and contents of reducing sugar in extracts of seaweeds added a decayed pine tree(sample No. 8) and the water of a ditch in a rice field(sample No. 27) were showed high value. And the value of chemical analysis of the sample is much better in comparison with control. Accordingly the hydrolysis of seaweed using microorganisms in the inside of these microflora samples can be possible.

  • The purpose of this study is screening of microfloras involved in hydrolysis of sea tangle (Laminaria japonica) and sea mustard ( Undaria pinnatifida), This is a part of studies on the hydrolysis of seaweed using microorganisms. General process is difficult to extract of the useful constituent parts as intercellular mucilage, storage polysaccharide and mineral from seafood. It was screening to thirty-three microflora samples as destructed of tissue in sea tangle and sea mustard to about two hundred microflora samples from mountain, rice field, dry field, sea, seaside and fish market etc. in the neighborhood of Yeosu.   • This is a part of study on the hydrolysis of seaweed using microorganisms. A microflora sample obtained from a decayed pine tree was purified by pure culture of 4 times. As the result, 16 isolated strains were obtained from the microflora sample and then each strain was incubated in a liquid medium with sea tangle powder for 3 weeks. Ratios of reduced sugar to total sugar of 08A211, 08C221 and 08B121 strains were highest. Accordingly, these three strains were incubated in 3 different liquid media of sodium alginate, sea tangle powder, and sea mustard powder for 3 or 4 weeks. The ratios of reduced sugar to total sugar and cell growth were measured once a week. Cell growth and ratios of reduced sugar to total sugar was highest for 08B121 in all the liquid media.

Isolation of Seaweed Hydrolytic Strains from Microfloras in Rice field Ditch Water (논두렁 물의 미생물군으로부터 해조분해능을 갖는 균주의 분리)

  • Various bacterial strains were isolated from rice field ditch water, and their seaweed degrading activities were investigated. They were incubated in a liquid medium of sea tangle (Laminaria iaponica) and sea mustard (Undaria pinnatifida) powder for 3 weeks. Ratios of reduced sugar to total sugar of the liquid medium were measured once a week. Ratios of reduced sugar to total sugar of 27A311, 27C221 27A111 and 27B121 strains were highest. Accordingly, these four strains were incubated in 3 different liquid media of sodium alginate, sea tangle powder, and sea mustard powder for 3 or 4 weeks. The ratios of reduced sugar to total sugar and cell growth were measured once a week. Cell growth was higher in 27A111 and 27C221. Ratios of reduced sugar to total sugar was higher for 27C221 in the liquid mediums with sodium alginate and sea mustard powder, and for 27A111 in the liquid medium with sea tangle powder.
