  • In this paper, we introduce a method of light focusing effect using prism structure to solve optical discontinuity of conventional external signage LED panels. The prims structures were patterned on a transparent polycarbonate substrate with MEMS and femto-second laser process. We have confirmed that the patterned prism structures on the substrate made artificial LED lights on empty space between the panels by light guide effect of the structure. The artificial light's lateral positions were controlled by thickness of polycarbonate substrate. This cost effective prim patterned transparent film can be utilized on digital signage LED panels to achieve good optical communication.

  • This paper describes an unscented Kalman filter approach to estimate the bias in magnetic field measurements. A microelectromechanical systems attitude heading reference system (MEMS AHRS) was used to measure the magnetic field, together with the acceleration and angular rate. A magnetic field is usually used for yaw detection, while the acceleration serves to detect the roll and pitch. Magnetic field measurements are vulnerable to distortion due to hard-iron effect and soft-iron effect. The bias in the measurement accounts for the hard-iron effect, and this paper focuses on an approach to estimate this bias. The proposed method is compared with other methods through experiments that implement the navigation of an underwater robot using an AHRS and Doppler velocity log. The results verify that the compensation of the bias by the proposed method improves the navigation performance more than or comparable to the compensation by other methods.

  • An intraoral spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) system has been developed, using a custom-built hand-held scanner and spectrometer. The hand-held OCT probe, based on a microelectromechanical systems scanner and a self-built miniaturized drive circuit, had a field of view sufficient for dental diagnosis. The spectrometer using a fabricated f-theta lens provided the image depth required for dental diagnosis. The axial and transverse resolutions of the OCT system in air were 7.5 ㎛ and 12 ㎛ respectively. The hand-held probe could scan an area of 10 × 10 mm2, and the spectrometer could image along a depth of 2.5 mm. To verify the utility of the developed OCT system, OCT images of tooth hard and soft tissues were acquired, and a user-interface program for diagnosis was developed. Early caries and microcracks that were difficult to diagnose with existing methods could be found, and the state of restoration could be observed. Measuring the depth of the gingival sulcus, distinguishing subgingival calculus, and detecting an implant under the gingiva suggested the possibility of the SD-OCT system as a diagnostic for dental soft tissues. Through the presented OCT images, the capability of the developed SD-OCT system for dental diagnosis was demonstrated.

  • With the advancement in technology and rapid increase in the demand for microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) based inertial measurement units (IMUs), high-volume production and test system remain a major challenge for the MEMS industry. To compete with the challenging market of Industry 4.0, here we developed an automatic test system to evaluate the performance of the ovenized IMU sensors as well as analyze the data. The automatic test system was developed by interfacing a commercial MEMS IMU (BMI 088) using LabVIEW. The BMI 088 was tested experimentally for long-term bias stability, ON/OFF bias repeatability, and root mean square (rms) noise. Furthermore, the data was analyzed through the developed test system. The results show that the automatic test system has improved the test time and reduced human effort. The developed automatic test system is a significant approach to MEMS research and development (R&D) to increase and improve the mass production of IMUs.

  • Since the development of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) technology for the medical field, various micro-fluid transfer systems have been studied. This paper proposes a micro-piezoelectric pump that imitates a stomach's peristalsis by using two separate piezoelectric elements, in contrast to existing micro-pumps. This piezoelectric pump is operated by using the valve-less traveling wave of peristalsis movement. If the piezoelectric plates at the two separated plates are actuated at the input voltage, a traveling wave occurs between the two plates. Then, the fluid migrates by the pressure difference generated by the traveling wave. Finite element analysis was performed to understand the mechanics of the combined system with piezoelectric elements, elastic structures, and fluids. The effects of design variables such as the chamber height and number of ceramics on the flow rate of the fluid were examined.

  • In this work, an analytical model employing a new higher-order shear deformation beam theory is utilized to investigate the bending behavior of axially randomly oriented functionally graded carbon nanotubes reinforced composite nanobeams. A modified continuum nonlocal strain gradient theory is employed to incorporate both microstructural effects and geometric nano-scale length scales. The extended rule of mixture, along with molecular dynamics simulations, is used to assess the equivalent mechanical properties of functionally graded carbon nanotubes reinforced composite (FG-CNTRC) beams. Carbon nanotube reinforcements are randomly distributed axially along the length of the beam. The equilibrium equations, accompanied by nonclassical boundary conditions, are formulated, and Navier's procedure is used to solve the resulting differential equation, yielding the response of the nanobeam under various mechanical loadings, including uniform, linear, and sinusoidal loads. Numerical analysis is conducted to examine the influence of inhomogeneity parameters, geometric parameters, types of loading, as well as nonlocal and length scale parameters on the deflections and stresses of axially functionally graded carbon nanotubes reinforced composite (AFG CNTRC) nanobeams. The results indicate that, in contrast to the nonlocal parameter, the beam stiffness is increased by both the CNTs volume fraction and the length-scale parameter. The presented model is applicable for designing and analyzing microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) constructed from carbon nanotubes reinforced composite nanobeams.

  • Objectives: This study shows feasibility and suitability of a microelectromechanical system inertial measurement unit(MEMS-IMU) as a helpful measurement device for evaluating movement system impairment syndrome. Methods: We reviewed articles of two fields in this study. First, we reviewed articles about movement system impairment syndrome(MSIS) as a brand new viewpoint of diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal pain. Second, we reviewed articles about conventional motion analysis system and inertial measurement unit(IMU) to show the superiority of IMU in analyzing the human movement. All papers were searched by SciVerse, world largest search engine and database about many academic fields including engineering and medicine. Results: Some physical quantities of human motions can be useful to the diagnosis of MSIS, and those data can be obtained by the MEMS-IMU without the weak points of the conventional motion analysis systems. Conclusions: Using MEMS-IMU as a measurement unit for diagnosing and evaluating MSIS is feasible and can be extended to many further studies.

  • We present the fabrication and characterization of transparent carbon nanotube film (CNF) piezoresistors. CNFs were fabricated by vacuum filtration methods with 65?92% transmittance and patterned on Au-deposited silicon wafer by photolithography and dry etching. The patterned CNFs were transferred onto poly-dimethysiloxane (PDMS) using the weak adhesion property between the silicon wafer and the Au layer. The transferred CNFs were confirmed to be piezoresistors using the equation of concentrated-force-derived resistance change. The gauge factor of the CNFs was measured to range from 10 to 20 as the resistance of the CNFs increased with applied pressure. In polymer microelectromechanical systems, CNF piezoresistors are the promising materials because of their high sensitivity and low-temperature process.

  • The projectors using liquid crystal display(LCD) have faults such as low optical efficiency, low brightness and even heat generation. To solve these problems reflective-type spatial light modulators based on MEMS (Microelectromechanical Systems) technology have emerged. Digital Micromirror DeviceTM(DMDTM), which was already developed by Texas Instruments Inc., and Thin-film Micromirror ArrayTM(TMATM), which has been recently developed by Daewoo Electronics Co., are the representative examples. The display using TMATM has particularly much higher optical efficiency than other projectors. But the micromirrors manufactured by semiconductor processes have inevitable distortion because of the limitations of the manufacturing processes, so that the distortions of their surfaces have great influence on the optical efficiency of the projector. This study investigated the effects of mirror flatness on the optical performance, including the optical efficiency, of the TMATM projector. That is to say, as a part of the efforts to enhance the performance of the TMATM projector, how much influence the form errors of a micromirror surface exert on the optical efficiency and the modulation of gray scale of the projector were analyzed through a pertinent modeling and simulations.
