  • This paper presents an automated subsurface micro void detection technique based on pulsed infrared thermography for inspecting epoxy molding compounds (EMC) used in electronic device packaging. Subsurface micro voids are first detected and visualized by extracting a lock-in amplitude image from raw thermal images. Binary imaging follows to achieve better visualization of subsurface micro voids. A median filter is then applied for removing sparse noise components. The performance of the proposed technique is tested using 36 EMC samples, which have subsurface (below $150{\mu}m{\sim}300{\mu}m$ from the inspection surface) micro voids ($150{\mu}m{\sim}300{\mu}m$ in diameter). The experimental results show that the subsurface micro voids can be successfully detected without causing any damage to the EMC samples, making it suitable for automated online inspection.

  • In resin transfer molding (RTM), resin is forced to flow through the fiber perform of inhomogeneous permeability. This inhomogeneity is responsible for the mismatch of resin velocity within and between the fiber tows. The capillary pressure of the fiber tows exacerbates the spatial variation of the resin velocity. The resulting microscopic perturbations of resin velocity at the flow front allow numerous air voids to form. In this study, a mathematical model was developed to predict the formation and migration of micro-voids during resin transfer molding. A transport equation was employed to account for the migration of voids between fiber tows. Incorporating the proposed model into a resin flow simulator, the volumetric content of micro-voids in the preform could be obtained during the simulation of resin impregnation.

  • Objectives: This study investigated the impact of micro-computed tomography (micro-CT)-based voxel size on the analysis of material/dentin interface voids and thickness of different endodontic cements. Materials and Methods: Following root-end resection and apical preparation, maxillary premolars were filled with mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA), Biodentine, and intermediate restorative material (IRM) (n = 24). The samples were scanned using micro-CT (SkyScan 1272; Bruker) and the cement/dentin interface and thickness of materials were evaluated at voxel sizes of 5, 10, and 20 ㎛. Analysis of variance and the Tukey test were conducted, and the degree of agreement between different voxel sizes was evaluated using the Bland and Altman method (p < 0.05). Results: All materials showed an increase in thickness from 5 to 10 and 20 ㎛ (p < 0.05). When evaluating the interface voids, materials were similar at 5 ㎛ (p > 0.05), while at 10 and 20 ㎛ Biodentine showed the lowest percentage of voids (p < 0.05). A decrease in the interface voids was observed for MTA and IRM at 20 ㎛, while Biodentine showed differences among all voxel sizes (p < 0.05). The Bland-Altman plots for comparisons among voxel sizes showed the largest deviations when comparing images between 5 and 20 ㎛. Conclusions: Voxel size had an impact on the micro-CT evaluation of thickness and interface voids of endodontic materials. All cements exhibited an increase in thickness and a decrease in the void percentage as the voxel size increased, especially when evaluating images at 20 ㎛.

  • Objectives: The obturation quality of MTA, Biodentine, Total Fill BC root canal sealer (RCS), and warm gutta-percha (WGP) in teeth with simulated internal root resorption (IRR) was evaluated by using micro-computed tomography. Materials and Methods: Standardized IRR cavities were created using 40 extracted maxillary central incisor teeth and randomly assigned into 4 groups (n = 10). IRR cavities were filled with MTA, Biodentine, Total Fill BC RCS (bulk-fill form) and WGP + Total Fill BC RCS. Percentage of voids between resorptive cavity walls and obturation material (external void), and inside the filling materials (internal voids) were measured. Results: Total Fill BC sealer in the bulk-fill form presented significantly highest values of external and internal void percentages (p < 0.05). Biodentine showed a significantly lowest external void percentage (p < 0.05). WGP + Total Fill BC RCS presented significantly lower values of internal void percentages than all groups (p < 0.05), except Biodentine (p > 0.05). Conclusion: None of the filling materials were created void-free obturation in resorption cavities. Biodentine may favor its application in teeth with IRR over Angelus MTA and bulkfill form of Total Fill BC.

  • Effects of a nitriding treatment on the tensile and high cycle fatigue properties were investigated by conducting ion-nitriding and gas nitro-caburizing treatments on the spheroidized SCr430B medium-carbon steel and performing tensile and tension-tension high cycle fatigue tests. The nitrided samples showed much lower strength and ductility compared to those in the initial as-spheroidized state and premature fracture occurred at the hardened layers. The micro-voids in the compound layer caused fatigue crack initiation. Thus, the removal of the compound layer with micro-voids remarkably improved the fatigue resistance to even beyond that of the as-spheroidized sample.

  • Finite element analysis model is suggested for analysis of milli-forming process, which forms milli-size products. Since the size of workpiece in a milli-forming process ranges from a few hundred micrometers to a few millimeters, microstructural changes such as the growth of micro-voids and the development of preferred orientation in a grain become crucial factors for the success of milli-forming. This analysis model incorporates anisotropy from deformation torture and deterioration of mechanical properties due to the growth of micro-voids. Applications of the proposed modeling to milli-forming are given and the results are carefully examined to understand the deformation characteristics such as texture development and damage evolution during extrusion/drawing of a milli-bar.

  • This paper is concerned with numerical analyses for bulk forming of a single crystal milli-product, whose typical size ranges from a few hundreds ${\mu}m$ to a few mm. The numerical formulation invoked in this paper combines the crystal plasticity theory considering texture development and the ductile damage mechanics for growth of micro voids, since orientation development and growth of micro voids become the primary factors for bulk forming of milli-size products. As applications, milli-extrusion of a single crystal round bar and milli-rolling of a single crystal plate are simulated and the results are discussed in detail.

  • This paper aims to investigate the effect of rotation on a micropolar thermoelastic medium with voids problem. The problem is assessed according to three-phase-lag model. The normal mode analysis used to obtain the analytical expressions of the considered variables. The non-dimensional displacement, temperature, Micro rotation, the change in the volume fraction field, and stress of the material are obtained and illustrated graphically. Comparisons are made with the results predicted by two theories; namely three- phase-lag model (3PHL) and Green-Naghdi theory of type III (G-N III). The considered variables were plotted for different values of the rotation parameter, the phase-lag of heat flux and the phase-lag of temperature. The numerical results reveal that the rotation and the phase-lag times significantly influence the distribution of the field quantities. Some particular cases of interest are deduced from the present investigation.
