  • In this paper, we present the possibility of quantification analysis for $A{\beta}$ captured by micro beads using Near-filed detection. In order to evaluate detection efficiency, detected signals were compared with different sizes of micro beads and a varied number of micro beads. Also, $A{\beta}$ deposits and $A{\beta}$ binding to micro beads were measured, therefore, we observed the $A{\beta}$ deposit and light scattering around the surface of micro beads induced by attached $A{\beta}$. This method can be used for quantitative analysis for not only the number of $A{\beta}$, but also the binding ratio of $A{\beta}$ to micro beads.

  • The micro device, coil, and channel for the biosensor integrated with the GMR-SV device based on the antiferromagnetic IrMn layer was fabricated by the light lithography process. When RBCs coupled with several magnetic beads with a diameter of $1{\mu}m$ passed on the micro channel, the movement of RBC + ${\mu}Beads$ is controlled by the electrical AC input signal. The RBC + ${\mu}Beads$ having a micro-magnetic field captured above the GMR-SV device is changed as the output signals for detection status. From these results, the GMR-SV device having the width magnitude of a few micron size can be applied as the biosensor for the analysis of a new magnetic property as the membrane's deformation of RBC coupled to magnetic beads.

  • This paper describes fabrication of a micro cell counter integrated with an oxygen micropump and Sephadex G-25 beads counting experiment. The device utilized a phototransistor, microwindow, and light source of microscope for beads detection. Microheater and microchannel were used for pumping and guiding of beads to the microwindow. Counting capability of the device was tested with a peristaltic pump and the measured signals (${\sim}10\;mV$) with oscilloscope showed peak shape when beads passed the microwindow. Pumping of beads by the oxygen micropump was carried out by heating paraffin, which enveloped manganese dioxide (catalyst), to trigger the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide into water and oxygen. It lasted for 5 min with $7\;{\mu}l$ of wt. 30 % hydrogen peroxide. Beads counting by oxygen micropump showed peaks ($2{\sim}20\;mV$) with $30\;{\mu}l$ of beads sample and the number of peaks by magnitude was acquired.

  • In molecular imaging studies via magnetic resonance imaging, in vivo cell tracking is an important issue for the observation of cell therapy or disease behavior. High resolution imaging and longitudinal study are necessary to track the cell movement. Since the field inhomogeneity extends over several voxels, we have performed the numerical analysis using the sub-voxel method dividing a voxel of MR image into several elements and the information about the field inhomogeneity distribution around the micro-beads. We imbedded ferrite-composite micro-beads with the size of $20-150{\mu}m$ in the subject substituted for cells to induce local field distortion. In the phantom imaging with the isotropic voxel size of $200{\mu}m^3$, we could confirm the feasibility of sub-voxel tracking in a 3.0 T MRI.

  • Spherical micro silica sol-gel immobilized enzyme beads were prepared in an emulsion system using cyclohexanone and Triton-X 114. The beads were used for the in situ immobilization of transaminase, trypsin, and lipase. Immobilization during the sol to gel phase transition was investigated to determine the effect of the emulsifying solvents, surfactants, and mixing process on the formation of spherical micro sol-gel enzyme beads and their catalytic activity. The different combinations of sol-gel precursors affected both activity and the stability of the enzymes, which suggests that each enzyme has a unique preference for the silica gel matrix dependent upon the characteristics of the precursors. The resulting enzyme-entrapped micronsized beads were characterized and utilized for several enzyme reaction cycles. These results indicated improved stability compared to the conventional crushed form silica sol-gel immobilized enzyme systems.

  • We performed the scientific analysis through composition analysis, micro-structure investigation, melting point and hardness test to the glass beads excavated at Naesanri in Gosung. Through this investigation, we could examine closely the characterization of raw materials and manufacture technique As a result of micro-structure investigation of glass beads, it appeared that the bubbles in glass beads have remained. Coloring agents of yellow glass bead was remained to the shape of inclusion. And on observing the transparent solid particle, we can know that these do not melt the raw materials because of low melting temperature of a crucible. The result of composition analysis of all glass beads using ICP, these were classified as $Na_2O_2$-$SiO_2$ type of glass. Also, these added to $AI_2O_3$ to improve the durability. The value of Vickers hardness of glass beads appeared the HV 490-530. The HV 1,440 of the transparent solid particle was much more than that of inner glass bead. This means that raw materials do not melt because of a low melting temperature of a crucible. The result of melting temperature analysis of glass beads using DSC/TGA, it was measured about $1,250^{\circ}C$.

  • This paper describes fabrication of a micro cell counter integrated with an oxygen micropump and counting experiment with Sephadex G-25 beads ($70{\sim}100\;{\mu}m$). The pumping part consisted of a microheater, catalyst (manganese dioxide) enveloped with paraffin, hydrogen peroxide, and microchannel, and the counting part consisted of collimated light, a microwindow, and a phototransistor including an external circuit. The micropump generated oxygen gas by decomposing hydrogen peroxide with manganese dioxide, which was initiated by melting the paraffin with the microheater, and pumped beads in the microchannel. When the beads passed the microwindow, they shaded the collimated light and changed the illumination on the phototransistor, which caused the current variation in the circuit. The signals, according to the bead size, reached up to 22 mV with noise level of 2 mV during 50 seconds and the numbers of peaks were analyzed by magnitude.

  • Magnetic beads (Dynabeads$^{(R)}$) embedded in ~1 micron size polystyrene beads bearing surface carboxylic acid groups were modified with aminobenzyl ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (ABEDTA) to concentrate or separate metal ions using pH gradients on micro and nano scales. The immobilization of ABEDTA was achieved by amide formation. The presence of the metal chelating functional group in the fully deprotonated form was confirmed by FT-IR. The chelation efficiency of beads was tested by determining metal ions in supernatant using GFAAS when pH gradients from 3 to 7. Mixtures of Cu and Mg and of Cd and Mn (at 10 ng/mL of metal) were separated as the difference in formation constant with the functional group of ABEDTA. The separation was repeated twice with relative standard deviation of <18%. A polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) microchip column packed with EDTA-coated magnetic beads was optimized to concentrate metal ion for practical applications by eluting a Cu solution of micro scale at pH 3.

  • In order to make a highly ordered three-dimensional porous structure of titania ceramics, porogen beads of PS [Polystyrene] and PMMA [poly(methylmetacrylate)] were prepared by emulsion polymerization using styrene monomer and methyl methacrylate monomer, respectively. The uniform beads of PS or PMMA latex were closely packed by centrifugation as a porogen template for the infiltration of titanium butoxide solution. The mixed compound of PS or PMMA with titanium butoxide was dried and the dry compacts were calcined at $450^{\circ}C-750^{\circ}C$ according to the firing schedule to prepare micro- and meso- structures of polycrystalline titania with monodispersed porosity. Inorganic frameworks composed of $TiO_2$ were formed and showed a three Dimensionally Ordered Microstructure [3DOM] of $TiO_2$ ceramics. The pulverized particles of the $TiO_2$ ceramic skeleton were characterized using XRD analysis. A monodispersed crystalline micro-structure with micro/meso porosity was observed by FE-SEM with EDX analysis. The 3DOM $TiO_2$ skeleton showed opalescent color tuning according to the direction of light.
