  • Characteristics of reduction properties and carbon deposition of $CuFe_2O_4$ and $Fe_3O_4$ were investigated by using TGA, XRD, SEM, TEM and gas analysis at $900^{\circ}C$. XRD analyses indicated that the reduced $Fe_3O_4$ was composed of Fe, graphite and $Fe_3C$ phases. In contrast, the reduced $CuFe_2O_4$ did not show the graphite or $Fe_3C$ phases. It was observed by SEM analysis that the surface of the $Fe_3O_4$ was completely covered with carbon, after methane partial oxidation. From gas analysis, $CuFe_2O_4$ showed much higher methane conversion and reduction kinetics as compared to the $Fe_3O_4$ under the same reaction conditions and the estimated carbon deposition amounts on the reduced $CuFe_2O_4$ was much lower than those on the reduced $Fe_3O_4$ during the syngas production process. It was found by TEM that carbon on the reduced $Fe_3O_4$ particles has a platelet shape.

  • Rechargeable battery such as lithium-ion battery has been noticed as a kinds of the energy storage system in the recent energy utilization and widely used actually in various small electronic equipment and electric vehicles. However, many thermal runaway caused battery accidents occurred recently, which still is obstacle for advanced application of lithium ion battery. One of the main differences to general fires is the existence of ionized electrolyte with electron during combustion. Therefore, we simply simulated the ion addition effects of battery fires by introducing an ionized fuel in jet diffusion flames. When the ionized methane through a corona discharge was used as fuel, the overall flame stability and shape such as flame length showed no significant difference from normal methane flame, but NOx and CO emissions measured at the post flame region decreased. The ion addition effect of methane oxidation was also numerically simulated with the modeling of hydrogen addition in the mixture. It was confirmed that the hydrogen addition at a fixed temperature had a similar effects on ionization of methane and hence could be modeled successfully.

  • Methane activation through oxychlorination is in the spotlight due to the relatively mild reaction conditions at atmospheric pressure and in the temperature range of $450-550^{\circ}C$. Although $CeO_2$ is known to exhibit good activity for methane oxychlorination, significant amounts of by-products such as $CO_2$, CO and carbon deposits are produced during the reaction over $CeO_2$. We investigated the effect of iron in $FeO_x/CeO_2$ catalysts on methane oxychlorination. $FeO_x/CeO_2$ with 3 wt% iron shows the maximum yield at $510^{\circ}C$ with 23% conversion of methane and 65% selectivity of chloromethane. XRD and $H_2$ TPR results indicate that iron-cerium solid solution was formed, resulting in the production of more easily reduced cerium oxide and the suppression of catalysts sintering during the reaction. Furthermore, the selectivity of by-products decreased more significantly over $FeO_x/CeO_2$ than cerium oxide, which can be attributed to the facilitation of HCl oxidation arising from the enhanced reducibility of the former sample.

  • Synthesis gas is a high valued compound as a basic chemicals at various chemical processes. Synthesis gas is mainly produced commercially by a steam reforming process. However, the process is highly endothermic so that the process is very energy-consuming process. Thus, this study was carried out to produce synthesis gas by the partial oxidation of methane to decrease the energy cost. The effects of reaction temperature and flow rate of reactants on the methane conversion, product selectivity, product ratio, and carbon deposition were investigated with 13wt% Ni/MgO catalyst in a fluidized bed reactor. With the fluidized bed reactor, $CH_4$ conversion was 91%, and Hz and CO selectivities were both 98% at 850$^{\circ}C$ and total flow rate of 100 mL/min. These values were higher than those of fixed bed reactor. From this result, we found that with the use of the fluidized bed reactor it was possible to avoid the disadvantage of fixed bed reactor (explosion) and increase the productivity of synthesis gas.

  • Synthesis gas is produced commercially by a steam reforming process. However, the process is highly endothermic and energy intensive. Thus, this study was conducted to produce synthesis gas by the partial oxidation of methane to cut down the energy cost. Supported Ni catalysts were prepared by the impregnation method. To examine the activity of the catalysts, a differential fixed bed reactor was used, and the reaction was carried out at $750{\sim}850^{\circ}C$ and 1 atm. The fresh and used catalysts were characterized by XRD, XPS, TGA and AAS. The highest catalytic activity was obtained with the 13wt% Ni/MgO catalyst, with which methane conversion was 81%, and $H_2$ and CO selectivities were 94% and 93%, respectively. 13wt% Ni/MgO catalyst showed the best $MgNiO_2$ solid solution state, which can explain the highest catalytic activity of the 13wt% Ni/MgO catalyst.

  • As the single chamber SOFC(SC-SOFC) showed higher prospect on reducing the operation temperature as well as offering higher design flexibility of SOFCs, lots of concerns have been given to investigate the catalytic activity of perovskite-type oxide in mixed fuel and oxidant conditions. Hence we thoroughly investigated the catalytic property of various perovskite-type oxides such as $La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}MnO_3(LSM),\;La_{0.6}Sr_{0.4}CoO_3(LSC),\;La_{0.6}Sr_{0.4}Co_{0.2}Fe_{0.8}O_3(LSCF),\;Sm_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}CoO_3(SSC),\;and\;Ba_{0.5}Sr_{0.5}Co_{0.8}Fe_{0.2}(BSCF)$ under the partial oxidation condition of methane which used to be given for SC-SOFC operation. In this study, powder form of each perovskite oxides whose surface areas were controlled to be equal, were investigated as functions of methane to oxygen ratios and reactor temperature. XRD, BET and SEM were employed to characterize the crystalline phase, surface area and microstructure of prepared powders before and after the catalytic oxidation. According to the gas phase analysis with flow-through type reactor and gas chromatography system, LSC, SSC, and LSCF showed higher catalytic activity at fairly lower temperature around $400^{\circ}C{\sim}450^{\circ}C$ whereas LSM and BSCF could be activated at much higher temperature above $600^{\circ}C$.

  • Bead type and hollow fiber type catalyst (HFC, Hollow Fiber type Catalyst) was prepared by $La_{0.1}Sr_{0.9}Co_{0.2}Fe_{0.8}O_{3-{\delta}}$ (LSCF1928) perovskite powder catalyst which showed excellent methane complete oxidation characteristics through previous studies. The HFC have a cylindrical shape with an empty interior, and pores can be formed through Phase inversion method so the specific surface area can be remarkably improved. In the case of the bead type catalyst prepared by adding Methyl Cellulose (MC), $SrCO_3$ was produced in addition to the original catalyst composition of LSCF1928 due to the reaction of $CO_2$ emitted from MC and Sr of the catalyst. In the case of the HFC, a single phase perovskite structure was obtained without impurities. The HFC calcined at $700{\sim}900^{\circ}C$ showed pore structure of finger-sponge-finger structure, and 99.9% oxygen conversion rate was achieved through complete oxidation of methane at $475^{\circ}C$. Air gap and spinning pressure condition were changed to control the HFC pore. 2 cm air gap and 7 bar spinning pressure showed the best catalytic performance and achieved oxygen conversion rates of more than 70.65%, 93.01%, and 99.99% at $425^{\circ}C$, $450^{\circ}C$ and $475^{\circ}C$, respectively.

  • M(10)-Ni(5)/SBA-15(M=Ce, Nd, Sm) catalysts were prepared for the partial oxidation of methane (POM) to syngas. The catalysts were characterized by BET, TEM, and XPS. The BET-specific surface area and average pore size for M(10)-Ni(5)/SBA-15(M=Ce, Nd, Sm) were 538.8, 504.3, and $447.3m^2/g$ and 6.4, 6.8, and 7.1 nm, respectively. TEM results showed that the mesoporous hexagonol structure was formed for SBA-15, while the homogeneous dispersion of Ni and Ce particles on the surface was formed for Ce(10)-Ni(5)/SBA-15 caused by the confinment effect of SBA-15. XPS data confirmed that $Ce^{4+}$ and $Ce^{3+}$ on the surface catalyst have two oxidation states due to the lattice oxygen species ($O^{2-}$, $O^-$). The yields of POM to syngas over Ce(10)-Ni(5)/SBA-15 were 52.9% $H_2$ and 21.7% CO at 1 atm, 973 K, $CH_4/O_2=2$, $GHSV=1.08{\times}10^5mL/g_{cat.}{\cdot}h$, and these values were kept constant even after 75 h on streams. The same tendency of syngas yields was observed for M(10)-Ni(5)/SBA-15(M=Ce, Nd, Sm). These results confirm that the redox reaction of promoters including Ce, Nd, and Sm enhanced the stability and yield of catalysts.

  • An efficient Pd-coated $La_{0.1}Sr_{0.9}Co_{0.2}Fe_{0.8}O_{3-{\delta}}$ (LSCF-1928) catalyst for total oxidation of methane under landfill gas at low tmeperature has been developed. Synergism was observed between Pd coating and LSCF-1928 substrate. When Pd coating on LSCF-1928, we used electroless plating method and conformed characteristic of catalyst through TPR(Temperature Programmed Reduction) analysis, XRD(X-ray Diffraction) analysis, SEM(Scanning Electron Microscope). The results demonstrated that the Pd coated LSCF-1928 catalysts showed higher performance than non-Pd LSCF-1928. Pd coated LSCF-1928 had low total oxidation temperature of methane (< $475^{\circ}C$) which is lower than total oxidation temperature of methane about non-Pd LSCF-1928 catalysts (= $475^{\circ}C$). Also, $O_2$ conversion rate was higher than non-Pd LSCF-1928 at same temperature.

  • Under flooded rice fields, methanogens produce methane which comes out through rice stalks, thus rice fields are known as one of the anthropogenic sources of atmospheric methane. Studies have shown that use of manure increases amount of methane emission from rice. To investigate mechanisms by which manure boosts methane emission, comparative soil metagenomics between inorganically (NPK) and pig manure fertilized paddy soils (PIG) were conducted. Results from taxonomy analysis showed that more abundant methanogens, methanotrophs, methylotrophs, and acetogens were found in PIG than in NPK. In addition, BLAST results indicated more abundant carbohydrate mabolisetm functional genes in PIG. Among the methane metabolism related genes, PIG sample showed higher abundance of methyl-coenzyme M reductase (mcrB/mcrD/mcrG) and trimethylamine-corrinoid protein Co-methyltransferase (mttB) genes. In contrast, genes that down regulate methane emission, such as trimethylamine monooxygenase (tmm) and phosphoserine/homoserine phosphotransferase (thrH), were observed more in NPK sample. In addition, more methanotrophic genes (pmoB/amoB/mxaJ), were found more abundant in PIG sample. Identifying key genes related to methane emission and methane oxidation may provide fundamental information regarding to mechanisms by which use of manure boosts methane emission from rice. The study presented here characterized molecular variation in rice paddy, introduced by the use of pig manure.
