The wave concept iterative procedure (WCIP) is used to analyze a quasi-square open metallic ring frequency selective surface (FSS). The quasi-square open metallic ring FSS is dual-polarized. When the incident plane wave is polarized in a direction parallel to the FSS' coupled parallel strips, it shows two rejecting bands. Moreover, another rejecting band can be obtained if the source plane wave is perpendicularly polarized with respect to the FSS' coupled parallel strips. The three resonant frequencies are inversely proportional to the length of the FSS' coupled strips to provide an easy fine tuning of the FSS structure. The simulated results obtained using WCIP are compared to the measured results, and a good agreement is reported.
Objective: The aim of this study was to assess artifacts induced by metallic restorations in three-dimensional (3D) dental surface models derived by cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT). Methods: Fifteen specimens, each with four extracted human premolars and molars embedded in a plaster block, were scanned by CBCT before and after the cavitated second premolars were restored with dental amalgam. Five consecutive surface models of each specimen were created according to increasing restoration size: no restoration (control) and small occlusal, large occlusal, disto-occlusal, and mesio-occluso-distal restorations. After registering each restored model with the control model, maximum linear discrepancy, area, and intensity of the artifacts were measured and compared. Results: Artifacts developed mostly on the buccal and lingual surfaces. They occurred not only on the second premolar but also on the first premolar and first molar. The parametric values increased significantly with increasing restoration size. Conclusions: Metallic restorations induce considerable artifacts in 3D dental surface models. Artifact reduction should be taken into consideration for a proper diagnosis and treatment planning when using 3D surface model derived by CBCT in dentofacial deformity patients.
Recently, various bulk metallic glasses (BMG's) having good mechanical and chemical properties were developed. BMG's can easily be deformed in the supercooled liquid region, via viscous flow mechanism. By using the viscous flow, the very low pressure is needed to deform the materials. In this study, we investigated the structural transition and deformation behavior of Vitreloy 1 (Zr/sub 41.2/Ti/sub 13.8/Cu/sub 12.5/Ni/sub 10/Be/sub 22.5/) using TMA and DSC. We applied the results to the micro forming process. The forming condition was chosen based on the viscosity data from TMA, and Si wafer with micro patterns on the surface was used as a forming die. The deformed surface was analyzed by SEM and 3D Surface Profiling System. The alloy showed good replication of the patterns. Quantitative measurement of roughness was useful to evaluate the replication. Surface condition of the deformed surface was determined by the initial surface condition.

We investigated configuration of metallic and insulating domains in $VO_2$ thin films, while spanning metal-insulator phase transition. Kelvin probe force microscopy, of which spatial resolution is less than 100 nm, enables us to measure local work function (WF) at the sample surface. The WF of $VO_2$ thin films decreased (increased) as increasing (decreasing) the sample temperature, during the phase transition. The higher and lower WF regions corresponded to the insulating and metallic domains, respectively. The metallic fraction, estimated from the WF maps, well explained the temperature-dependent resistivity based on the percolation model. The WF mapping also showed us how the structural defects affected the phase transition behaviors.

A slicing method by thin diamond blade is widely usd slicing of hard and brittle materials such as ceramics, glass and ferrite etc.. In this study, a new slicing system which realizes highly efficient and mirror surface slicing was developed by applying ELID-grinding with metallic bond diamond blades and its performance was evaluated. Hard and brittle materials such as ceramics, glass and ferrite were used as workpiece. Metallic bond diamond blades with grit sizes #325 and #2000 were used. Experimental results show that highly efficient slicing and good mirror surface can be successfully obtained using the developed slicing system with ELID features.
Calcium phosphate ceramics have been applied intensively to orthopaedic and dental implants by virtue of their osteoconductive nature. In an attempt to enhance the bone implant intergrity and Eta utility, these ceramics are deposited onto the porous surface of metallic implants. The coating procedure and the ensuing phase transformations of the ceramic alter the mechanical properties and surface chemistry of the ceramic layers as well as those of the substrate. These structural and compositional differences are directly related to the interaction mechanisms at the surface-active ceramicbone interface. Material and processing induced influences on dissolution, electrokinetic behavior, ceramic-metallic substrate interface and boRe growth enhancement are presented.
The electro-chemical removal (ECR) of water pollutants by metal-ACF electrodes from wastewater was investigated over wide range of ECR time. The ECR capacities of metallic ACF electrodes were related to physical properties such as adsorption isotherm, surface area and pore size and to reaction time. Surface morphologies and elemental analysis for the metal supported ACFs after electro-catalytic reaction were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy disperse X-ray (EDX) to explain the changes in adsorption properties. The IR spectra of metallic ACFs for the investigation of functional groups show that the electro-catalytic treatment is consequently associated with the removal of pollutants with the increasing surface reactivity of the activated carbon fibers. The metal-ACFs were electro-catalytically reacted to waste water to investigate the removal efficiency for the COD, T-N, $NH_4$-N, $NO_3$-N and $NO_2$-N. From these removal results of the piggery waste using metallic ACFs substrate, satisfactory removal performance was achieved. The removal efficiency of the metallic ACFs substrate was mainly determined by the properties of the material for adsorption and trapping of organics, and catalytic effects.
The surface of silicon dummy wafers is contaminated with metallic impurities owing to the reaction with and adhesion of chemicals during the oxidation process. These metallic impurities negatively affect the device performance, reliability, and yield. To solve this problem, a wafer-cleaning process that removes metallic impurities is essential. RCA (Radio Corporation of America) cleaning is commonly used, but there are problems such as increased surface roughness and formation of metal hydroxides. Herein, we attempt to use a chelating agent (EDTA) to reduce the surface roughness, improve the stability of cleaning solutions, and prevent the re-adsorption of impurities. The bonding between the cleaning solution and metal powder is analyzed by referring to the Pourbaix diagram. The changes in the ionic conductivity, H2O2 decomposition behavior, and degree of dissolution are checked with a conductivity meter, and the changes in the absorbance and particle size before and after the reaction are confirmed by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-vis) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) analyses. Thus, the addition of a chelating agent prevents the decomposition of H2O2 and improves the life of the silicon wafer cleaning solution, allowing it to react smoothly with metallic impurities.

Recently plasma etching research has been focused on the metal surfaces in the nuclear industry. In this study, surface etching reaction of metallic Co and Mo, principal contaminants in the spent nuclear components, in CF$_4$/O$_2$, gas plasma has been experimentally investigated to look into the applicability and the effectiveness of the technique for the surface decontamination. Experimental variables are $CF_4$/$O_2$ ratio and substrate temperature between 29$0^{\circ}C$ and 38$0^{\circ}C$. Experimental results Show that the optimum gas composition is 80%CF$_4$-20%$O_2$ and the metallic Co and Mo are etched out well enough in the temperatures range. Cobalt starts to be etched above $350^{\circ}C$ and the etching rate increases with increasing substrate temperature. Maximum rate achieved at 38$0^{\circ}C$ under 220 W r.f. plasma power is 0.06 $\mu\textrm{m}$/min. On the other hand, the metallic Mo is etched easily even at low temperature and the reaction rate drastically increases as the substrate temperature goes up. Highest rate obtained under the same conditions is $1.9\mu\textrm{m}$/min. OES (Optical Emission Spectroscopy) analysis reveals that the intensities of F atom and CO molecule reach maximum at the optimum gas composition, which demonstrates that the principal reaction mechanism is fluorination and/or carbonyl reaction. It is confirmed, therefore, that dry processing technique using reactive plasma is quite feasible and applicable for the decontamination of surface-contaminated parts or equipments.

Recovery of heavy-metallic component from a waste solution of factory was undertaken by the solar cell electricity. The solution was obtained from an electrolytic etching process of 316L stainless steel. The electrolysis of the solution for recovery of heavy metallic components was made with platinum plated titanium mesh anode and copper plate cathode. Analysis for the solution and electro-winned materials were made by EDS, XRD and SEM. Iron, chromium, and sulfur components were recovered on the cathode from the solution. Result of EDS analysis for the electro-winned materials revealed that some metal oxide were contained in the recovered material. The recovered materials were expected to have metallic form only by the electrolysis, but metal compounds were contained because of weak solar cell power. Nickel and manganese component in the solution doesn't recovered by this electrolysis process, but they made a sludge with phosphoric acid in the solution.
