As evidenced through rapidly growing digital repositories and web resources, automatic metadata generation is becoming ever more critical, especially considering the costly and complex operation of manual metadata creation. Also, automatic metadata generation is apt to consistent metadata application. In this sense, metadata quality and interoperability can be enhanced by utilizing a mechanism for automatic metadata generation. In this article, a mechanism of automatic metadata extraction called ExMETA is introduced in order to alleviate issues dealing with inconsistent metadata application and semantic interoperability across ever-growing digital collections. Conceptual graph, one of formal languages that represent the meanings of natural language sentences, is utilized for ExMETA as a mediation mechanism that enhances the metadata quality by disambiguating semantic ambiguities caused by isolation of a metadata element and its corresponding definition from the relevant context. Hence, automatic metadata generation by using ExMETA can be a good way of enhancing metadata quality and semantic interoperability.

기존 메타데이터의 품질 측정 방법은 오류가 발생한 레코드를 단순히 계수하여 그 비율로 품질을 측정하였다. 이러한 한계를 극복하기 위해 메타데이터 요소별로 상대적 중요 정도를 나타내는 가중치를 적용함으로서, 메타데이터 품질을 체계적으로 계량화 하는 측정 방법을 제시하고자 하였다. 구체적인 가중치 부여 방법으로 엔트로피, 이용자 과업, 그리고 이용 통계를 활용하였다. 또한 이들을 결합하여 통합 가중치를 제시하고 실제 서비스 되고 있는 학술지 기사 메타데이터에 적용하였다. 실험 결과, 엔트로피 가중치 방법은 데이터 자체의 특성을 잘 반영하며, 이용자 과업을 적용한 방법은 이용자의 정보요구를 해결하는 필요한 메타데이터 요소를 제시하며, 통합 가중치는 특정 메타데이터 요소의 오류에 영향을 받지 않으면서 균형 잡힌 측정값을 제시하여 계량화 방법에 적합한 것으로 나타났다.

The following research questions are examined in this paper. What hinders quality metadata generation and metadata interoperability? What kind of semantic representation technique can be utilized in order to enhance metadata quality and semantic interoperability? This paper suggests a way of handling semantic ambiguity for metadata generation. The conceptual graph is utilized to disambiguate semantic ambiguities caused by isolation of a metadata element and its corresponding definition from the relevant context. The mechanism introduced in this paper has the potential to alleviate issues dealing with inconsistent metadata application and interoperability across digital collections.

메타데이터는 핵심 정보의 재사용, 유통 및 관리, 저작권 보호, 중복 투자의 방지 등을 위해 사용된다. 기능성게임은 다계층 멀티미디어 데이터로 구성되어 있다. 또한 이용목적에 따른 선택을 위해 품질정보가 중요하다. 본 논문에서는 멀티미디어 특성정보와 영역별 계량적인 품질 정보를 포함한 기능성게임의 메타데이터 스키마를 설계하였다. 이 연구는 기능성게임 이용자들 에게 품질정보를 통해 신뢰도를 제공하고 멀티미디어 특성정보를 통해 관련분야 메타데이터와 호환성을 제공할 수 있는 메타데이터 시스템 개발의 토대가 될 것이다. 나아가 기능성게임 산업의 안정적 발전에 기여할 것으로 기대한다.

It is essential for companies to manage massive data for dealing with large volume of transactions and customers' needs. To this end, the companies have operated data warehouse with many complex tools for data gathering and reporting to the end-users. However, the data from the heterogeneous tools at the various sources cannot be exchanged because of the different interfaces. Therefore, the data cannot be controlled with integrated manner, and furthermore the companies do not focus the quality of data resulting in the data quality problem. Thus, this study suggests how to manage massive data with a metadata. In particular, we investigate current status of metadata management, its appliance, and perspectives. The contribution of this research is to apply the metadata management system to the real world and to suggest its management procedure.

This study presents a database quality evaluation framework. As a way to build a framework, this study expands data quality management to include data transformation processes as well as data. Further, an information structure graph is applied to represent data transformations processes. An information structure graph is absed on a relational database scheme. Thus, data transformation processes may be stored in a relational database. This kind of integration of data transformation metadata with technical metadata eases evaluation of database qualities and their causes.

기업에서 관리하여야 하는 데이터의 양이 급속히 증대함에 따라 데이터의 품질관리 문제가 대두되고 있다. 또한 데이터의 통합이 이루어지지 않아 중복관리, 저품질의 정보제공, 특정 데이터의 누락 등의 문제가 발생하고 있어 본 연구에서는 메타데이터를 활용한 데이터 품질관리 방안을 모색한다. 이를 위해 메타데이터의 의의 및 다양한 메타데이터 관리 현황을 분석하고, 실무자와의 인터뷰를 통해 컨테이너터미널을 대상으로 메타데이터 관리 방안을 제시하였다. 주요 연구 내용은 A사의 메타데이터 관리를 위해 데이터 표준화 과정을 수행하였으며, 제약 조건 및 조정 사항 등을 메타데이터 레파지토리에 반영하였다. 본 연구의 공헌도는 제시된 관리 방안을 통해 A사의 데이터 품질 문제를 개선할 수 있다는 것과 해당 도메인을 대상으로 메타데이터 관리 방안을 적용하였다는데 있다. 본 연구의 한계점은 관리 방안이 일부분의 업무에만 적용되었다는 점이며, 향후 기업과 기업간의 통합을 위한 메타데이터 관리 방안에 대한 연구가 필요하다.

Many previous studies of data quality have focused on the realization and evaluation of both data value quality and data service quality. These studies revealed that poor data value quality and poor data service quality were caused by poor data structure. In this study we focus on metadata management, namely, data structure quality and introduce the data quality management maturity model as a preferred maturity model. We empirically show that data quality improves as data management matures.

본 연구에서는 실무적용 관점에서 중요한 기준인 메타데이터 개발기준, 메타데이터 구성과 메타데이터 서비스, 그리고 메타데이터 적용요건, 디지털도서관 시스템의 메타데이터 개발사례 등을 연구범위로 선정하여 최근 10년(1999-2009)간 국내 메타데이터 주제의 학술지 논문과 학위논문 등을 조사하고 내용을 분석하여 최신의 연구동향을 파악하고 그에 따른 취약한 부분을 진단했다.

오늘날, 기능성게임 시장의 많은 부분을 교육용기능성게임이 차지하고 있지만 교육용기능성게임에 대한 유용한 품질평가 정보를 사용자 또는 개발자에게 제공하기 위한 품질평가 시스템은 부족한 실정이다. 비록 기능성게임을 위한 기존의 메타데이터 관리 시스템이 개발되어 있지만 기존 시스템은 교육용기능성게임의 품질평가 정보를 관리 할 수 있는 기능은 제공되지 않고 있다. 따라서 교육용기능성게임의 품질평가 관리시스템의 개발은 매우 중요한 과제이다. 우리는 교육기능성게임에 대한 메타데이터 및 품질평가를 모두 관리하기 위한 시스템의 설계를 제안하였다. 본 시스템의 장점은 일반사용자와 개발자에게는 신뢰할 수 있는 유용한 정보를 제공하고, 시스템 관리자에게 메타데이터와 품질정보를 쉽고 편리하게 관리할 수 있는 수단을 지원하는 것이다.
