  • In this paper, we consider the c-sample location problem for ordered alternatives using median ranked ordering-set samples(MROSS). We propose the test statistic using the median of samples that have the same ranked order in each cycle of ranted ordering-set sample(ROSS). We obtain the asymptotic property of the proposed test statistic and Pitman efficiency with respect to other test statistic. In simulation study, our proposed test statistic has good powers for some underlying distributions we consider.

  • In this paper, we considered three methods for outlier identification sample surveys. First, we studied method of handling and adjusting outliers in normal population. Second, we studied existing methods using mean, maximum and minimum and proposed a test using of median which well reflects characteristic of data regardless of sampling distribution. Finally, we showed our test using median works better than Dixon and mean test through simulation.

  • In this paper, we propose a new multilevel nonlinear filter for simultaneous edge detection and noise suppression, which we call a order statistic-median hybrid(OMH) filler. The median-related filters cause an edge shift in the presence of an impulse near the edge. The proposed filter reduces such edge shifting while suppressing impulsive as well as nonimpulsive noise. We show that at the noisy edge point the OMH filter is substantially superior to the median filter, the $\alpha$-TM filter and the STM filter[I] in two respects: (a) the output bias error and (b) the output mean square error. Test results confirm that the OMH filter is robust in preserving sharp edges, inhibiting edge shifting, and suppressing a wide variety of noise. The structure for the OMH filter integrated circuit is also described.

  • This study reviews several well-known control charts for the location parameter with a discussion of the relationship between the maintenance of the control chart and a series of hypotheses testing. As a by-product, we then propose a new median control chart with the sign test statistic. We also modify the nonparametric control charts to easily understand the relation. Then we illustrate the construction of several median control charts with the industrial data and compare the efficiency among several control charts. Finally, we discuss some interesting features for the median control charts as concluding remarks.

  • In this thesis, we propose the test statistic for ordered alternatives on c-sample ranked set samples(RSS). The proposed test statistic JRSS is Jonckheere type statistic using the median of the i-th samples in each cycle. We obtained the asymptotic property of the proposed test statistic and the asymptotic relative efficiencies of the proposed test statistic with respect to J SRS which Jonckheere type statistic on simple random samples(SRS). From the simulation works, J RSS is superior to J SRS. We compared the empirical powers of J RSS with respect to U RSS on ranked set sample and U SRS on simple random sample using all samples, which are proposed by Kim, Kim and Lee(1999). The powers of J RSS are nearly the same values when entire sample size is large. J RSS is superior to U RSS. J RSS is simpler than U RSSon calculating process.

  • cDNA microarray experiments permit us to investigate the expression levels of thousands of genes simultaneously and to make it easy to compare gene expression from different populations. However, researchers are asked to be cautious in interpreting the results because of the unexpected sources of variation such as systematic errors from the microarrayer and the difference of cDNA dye intensity. And the scanner itself calculates both of mean and median of the signal and background pixels, so it follows a selection which raw data will be used in analysis. In this paper, we compare the results in each case of using mean and median from the raw data and normalization methods in reducing the systematic errors with arm's skin cells of old and young males. Using median is preferable to mean because the distribution of the test statistic (t-statistic) from the median is more close to normal distribution than that from mean. Scaled print tip normalization is better than global or lowess normalization due to the distribution of the test-statistic.

  • A ranked set sample version of the sign test is proposed for testing hypotheses concerning the quantiles of a population characteristic by Kaur, et. al(2002). In this paper, we proposed the ranked set sample Wilcoxon signed rank test for quantiles under equal allocation. We obtain the asymptotic property and the asymptotic relative efficiencies of the proposed test statistic with respect to Wilcoxon signed rank test of simple random sample for quantiles under equal allocation. We calculate the ARE of test statistics, the proposed test statistic is more efficient than simple random sampling for all quantiles. The relative advantage of ranked set sampling is greatest at the median and tapers off in the tails.

  • Two truncated sequential tests are developed for the two-sample scale problem based on the usual Wilcoxon rank-sum statistic for two different dispersion indices - absolute median deviations, when the medians of the two populations X and Y are equal or known and sums of squared mean deviations, when the medians are either unknown or unequal. The first test is briefly called SWAMD test and the second SWSMD test. For the SWAMD test, the percentile points for both the one-sided and two-sided alternatives, (equation omitted) have been found by Wiener approximation and their values computed for a range of values of a and N; analytical expression for the power function has been derived through Wiener process and its performance studied for various sequential designs for exponential distribution. This test has been illustrated by a numerical example. All the results of the SWAMD test, being directly applicable to the SWSMD test, are not dealt with separately Both the tests are compared and their suitable applications indicated.

  • In this paper we consider the problem of identifying and testing the outliers in linear regression. first we consider the problem for testing the null hypothesis of no outliers. The test based on the ratio of two scale estimates is proposed. We show the asymptotic distribution of the test statistic by Monte Carlo simulation and investigate its properties. Next we consider the problem of identifying the outliers. A forward sequential procedure based on the suggested test is proposed and shown to perform fairly well. The forward sequential procedure is unaffected by masking and swamping effects because the test statistic is based on robust estimate.

  • The objective of this study is to perform outlier analysis to obtain the distribution of groundwater levels through the best model. The groundwater levels are measured in 10, 25 and 30 piezometers in Seoul, Daejeon and Suncheon in South Korea. Fifty-eight empirical distribution functions were applied to determine a suitable fit for the measured groundwater levels. The best fitted models based on the measured values are determined as the Generalized Pareto distribution, the Johnson SB distribution and the Normal distribution for Seoul, Daejeon and Suncheon, respectively; the reliability is estimated through the Anderson-Darling method. In this study, to choose the appropriate confidence interval, the relationship between the amount of outlier data and the confidence level is demonstrated, and then the 95% is selected at a reasonable confidence level. The best model shows a smaller error ratio than the GEV while the Mahalanobis distance and outlier labelling methods results are compared and validated. The outlier labelling and Mahalanobis distance based on median shown higher validated error ratios compared to their mean equivalent suggesting, the methods sensitivity to data structure.
