This work is focused on a parametric numerical study of the barrier's bar inclination shelter effect in crosswind scenario. The parametric study combines mesh morphing and design of experiments in automated manner. Radial Basis Functions (RBF) method is used for mesh morphing and Ansys Workbench is used as an automation platform. Wind barrier consists of five bars where each bar angle is parameterized. Design points are defined using the design of experiments (DOE) technique to accurately represent the entire design space. Three-dimensional RANS numerical simulation was utilized with commercial software Ansys Fluent 14.5. In addition to the numerical study, experimental measurement of the aerodynamic forces acting on a vehicle is performed in order to define the critical wind disturbance scenario. The wind barrier optimization method combines morphing, an advanced CFD solver, high performance computing, and process automaters. The goal is to present a parametric aerodynamic simulation methodology for the wind barrier shelter that integrates accuracy and an extended design space in an automated manner. In addition, goal driven optimization is conducted for the most influential parameters for the wind barrier shelter.
Thermal barrier coating(TBC) applied to fighter and turbine engines is a technology that improves the durability of core parts by lowering the surface temperature of base material. The thermal stress caused by mis-match of the coefficient of thermal expansion between the top coating and the TGO interface is the main cause of TBC breakage. Since the thermal stress is dependent on the microstructure of the TBC, designing microstructure of TBC can improve the durability as well as lower the thermal stress. In this study, the effect of coating thickness, volume of porosity and vertical cracking on the thermal stress was analyzed through finite element analysis. Through the analysis results, a design range of a microstructure that can improve the durability of thermal barrier coating by lowering thermal stress is proposed.

In this study, the effects of the mesh barrier on the free dispersion of ammonia were numerically investigated under different atmospheric conditions. This study presents the detail and flow feature of the dispersion of ammonia through the mesh barrier on various free stream conditions to decline and limit the toxic danger of the ammonia. It is assumed that the dispersion of the ammonia occurred through the leakage in the pipeline. Parametric studies were conducted on the performance of the mesh barrier by using the Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with realizable k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model. Numerical simulations of ammonia dispersion in the presence of mesh barrier revealed significant results in a fully turbulent free stream condition. The results clearly show that the flow behavior was found to be a direct result of mesh size and ammonia dispersion is highly influenced by these changes in flow patterns in downstream. In fact, the flow regime becomes laminar as flow passes through mesh barrier. According to the results, the mesh barrier decreased the maximum concentration of the ammonia gas and limited the risk zone (more than 500 ppm) lower than 2 m height. Furthermore, a significant reduction occurs in the slope of the upper boundary of $NH_3$ risk zone distribution at downstream when a mesh barrier is presented. Thus, this device highly restricts the leak distribution of ammonia in the industrial plan.
Thermal barrier coating (TBC) is used to protect substrates and extend the operating life of gas turbines in power plant and aeronautical applications. The major causes of failure of such coatings is spallation, which results from thermal stress due to a thermal expansion coefficient mismatch between the top coating and the bond coating layers. In this paper, the effects of the material properties and the thickness of the top coating layer on thermal stresses were evaluated using the finite element method and the equation for the thermal expansion coefficient mismatch stress. In addition, we investigated a design technique for the top coating whereby thermal resistance is exploited.
This paper examines an design of double-barrier rotor structure for improving the efficiency performance in a single-phase line-start permanent magnet(LSPM) motor. By utilizing the advantages of double-barrier rotor design that by increasing reluctance torque generation to compensate magnet torque production, the copper loss reduction is achieved. The optimal approach of response surface methodogy(RSM) is performed for determining a optimum double-barrier rotor structure. The improving of efficiency performance is confirmed by finite element method(FEM) and test.
Plasma Display Panel(PDP) is a type of flat panel display utilizing the light emission produced by gas discharge. Barrier Ribs of PDP separating each sub-pixel prevents optical and electrical crosstalks from adjacent sub-pixels. The mold for forming the barrier ribs has been newly researched to overcome the disadvantages of conventional manufacturing processes such as screen printing, sand-blasting and photosensitive glass methods. The mold for PDP barrier ribs have stripes of micro grooves transferring glass-material wall. In this paper , Stripes of grooves of which width 48$\mu$m, depth 124$\mu$m , pitch 274$\mu$m was acquired by machining of single crystal silicon with dicing saw blade. Maximum roughness of the bottom of the grooves was 59.6 nm Ra in grooving Si. Barrier ribs were farmed with silicone rubber mold, which is transferred from grooved Si forming hard mold. Silicone rubber mold has the elasticity, which enable to accommodate the waviness of lower glass plate of PDP. The methods assisted by the microwave and UV was adopted for reducing the forming time of glass paste.
Owing to advantages of polymeric materials for hydrogen tank liner like light-weight property and high specific strength, polymer based composites have gained much attention. Despite of many benefits, polymeric materials for fuel cell tank cause problems which is critical to applications as low gas barrier property, and poor processability when adding fillers. For these reasons, improving gas barrier property of polymer composites is required to study for expanding application fields. This work presents impermeable polymer nanocomposites by introducing thin barrier coating using layer by layer (LBL) deposition method. Also, bi-layered and quad-layered nanocomposites were fabricated and compared for identifying relationship between deposition step and gas barrier property. Reduction in gas permeability was observed without interrupting mechanical property and processability. It is discussed that proper coating conditions were suggested when different coating materials and deposition steps were applied. We investigated morphology, gas barrier property and mechanical properties of fabricated nanocomposites by FE-SEM, Oxygen permeation analyzer, UTM, respectively. In addition, we revealed the mechanism of barrier performance of LBL coating using materials which have high aspect ratio.

In this paper, high precision molding process was developed using a soft mold to fabricate fine closed-types of the barrier ribs for PDP. A green sheet was employed to fabricate the barrier ribs in this process. The soft mold with good demolding characteristics was replicated from a master mold. An optimal forming load which would not fracture the soft mold was also determined. The barrier ribs of rectangular type with upper width of $30\;{\mu}m$ would be fabricated by this process.
Herein, we report polyvinyl butyral composites coatings containing various loadings of 72-h bath sonicated hexagonal boron nitride particles (5 ㎛) to enhance barrier properties of coatings. Barrier properties of coatings were determined in 3.5 wt% NaCl after different time periods of immersion via electrochemical techniques such as open circuit potential, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and potentiodynamic polarization test. Coatings containing sonicated hexagonal boron particles exhibited improved corrosion resistance for longer periods of immersion compared to neat coating. We also discussed effects of hexagonal boron nitride on healing properties of polyvinyl butyral. Coatings containing 1.0 wt% loading of sonicated hexagonal boron nitride showed improved long-term barrier properties than coatings with other compositions. The presence of hexagonal boron nitride also affected the healing properties of polyvinyl butyral coatings besides their barrier properties. Such improved barrier properties of composites coatings were attributed to the high aspect ratio, plate-like shape, and electrically insulated nature of the filler.
