  • In this paper, we analyze and simulate the performance of a cooperative communication system adopting a maximum likelihood (ML) equalizer. In wireless communication systems, cooperative communication schemes employing several relays can be applied for extending the communication coverage. It is assumed that both relays and user terminals can move. Therefore, coverages of two or more relays can overlap each other. If wanted and interfering signals are transmitted through the same channel and there are one terminal in the overlapped region, its performance is degraded due to interference. Hence, we use a ML equalizer for rejecting the effect of interfering signal and enhancing the communication system performance. The cooperative system performance is evaluated in terms of bit error probability. From the simulation results, it is demonstrated that the ML receiver shows good interference cancellation performance although its complexity is high.

  • In most existing researches on non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) with symmetric superposition coding (SSC), uniform sources have been usually considered. For the first part in this two-part paper, for the strongest channel gain user, we showed that the bit-error rate (BER) for the optimal maximum a-posteriori (MAP) receiver for the non-uniform source improves slightly, compared to that of the conventional receiver for the uniform sources. We demonstrate that in communication scenarios of the non-uniform source NOMA schemes, for the weakest channel gain user, the BER performance of the optimal MAP receiver for a non-uniform source improves greatly, compared to that of the conventional receiver for uniform sources. We first derive an analytical expression of the BER for non-uniform source NOMA with SSC. Then, simulations demonstrate that the BER of the optimal MAP receiver for the non-uniform source improves, compared with that of the conventional maximum likelihood (ML) receiver for the uniform sources. In result, the proposed optimal MAP receiver for the non-uniform source could be a promising scheme for SSC NOMA, with improved BER performances.

  • In this paper, we propose ST-MWSK (space-time M-ary orthogonal Walsh sequence keying) employing MWSK which does not require channel estimation at the receiver. The computational complexity for the noncoherent ML (maximum-likelihood) detector of ST-MWSK is significantly reduced compared to that of ST-FSK (ST frequency-shift keying). Also, the performance of ST-MWSK is virtually identical to that of ST-FSK.

  • In this paper, we propose a timing detector using suboptimal maximum likelihood method. The proposed method has an simple reference signal generator. Additionally, timing detector's gain of the proposed method is the same to Early-Late gate and ML method. We reveal that tracking range of time tracker is narrow because of using data-decision, that is, tracking range is ${\pm}0.06ns$ for the 4-order Gaussian monocycle with 0.7ns pulse width. Therefore we can find that searcher must have very accurate acquisition procedure. When estimating a performance of time tracker, we consider a jitter in transmitter and receiver's pulse generation process as well as background noise. By using computer simulation, we propose mean/variance of timing detector and tracking process. Also we consider a mobility in tracking process, i.e., timing error modeled ramp function. In order to propose a performance of time tracker, we consider only one correlation demodulator.

  • In this paper a two-stage maximum-likelihood (ML) detection structure for group detection in DS/CDMA systems is presented. The first stage of the receiver is a linear filter, aimed at suppressing the effect of the unwanted (i.e., out-of-grout) users' signals, while the second stage is a non-linear block, implementing a ML detection rule on the set of desired users signals. As to the linear stage, we consider both the decorrelating and the minimum mean square error approaches. Interestingly, the proposed detection structure turns out to be a generalization of Varanasi's group detector, to which it reduces when the system is synchronous, the signatures are linerly independent and the first stage of the receiver is a decorrelator. The issue of blind adaptive receiver implementation is also considered, and implementations of the proposed receiver based on the LMS algorithm, the RLS algorithm and subspace-tracking algorithms are presented. These adaptive receivers do not rely on any knowledge on the out-of group users' signals, and are thus particularly suited for rejection of out-of-cell interference in the base station. Simulation results confirm that the proposed structure achieves very satisfactory performance in comparison with previously derived receivers, as well as that the proposed blind adaptive algorithms achieve satisfactory performance.

  • In this paper, we consider a linear precoding for the effective spectrum sharing in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) cognitive radio system where a secondary user coexists with primary users. The secondary user employs the orthogonal space time block coding (OSTBC) at the transmitter. Assuming a flat fading channel and a maximum-likelihood receiver, the optimum precoder forces transmission referred to as eigen-beamforming. In this paper, to eliminate the interference, ZF criterion based eigen-beamforming is not only used but also the precoding weight is chosen to cancel the remaining interference. This weight is computed by vector's likelihood. Simulation results show stronger interference suppression capability, better SER performance, and higher capacity than the algorithm in [4].

  • It has been shown that the performance of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) spatial multiplexing systems is significantly degraded when spatial correlation exists between transmit and receive antenna pairs. In this paper, we investigate designs of a new statistical precoder for spatial multiplexing systems with maximum likelihood (ML) receiver which requires only correlation statistics at the transmitter. Two kinds of closed-form solution precoders based on rotation and power allocation are proposed by means of maximizing the minimum E tlidean distance of joint symbol constellations. In addition, we extend our results to linear receivers for correlated channels. We provide a method which yields the same profits from the proposed precoders based on a simple zero-forcing (ZF) receiver. The simulation shows that 2dB and 8dB gains are achieved for ML and ZF systems with two transmit antennas, respectively, compared to the conventional systems.

  • In this paper, we evaluate the performance of up-link multi-user MIMO systems with SM. The receiver demodulates the received signal using ML method determines the signal which seems to be the most probable after comparing the received signal and all transmitted signal candidates. When transmitting with the same data rate, the SM method shows better performance of bit error rate(BER) than that of the space shift keying(SSK) of the previously proposed multi-user system.

  • In this paper, we analyze the performance of the sphere decoding algorithm at MIMO system. The BER performance of this algorithm is the same as that of ML receiver, but computational complexity of SD algorithm is much less than that of ML receiver. The independent signals from each transmit antennas are modulated by using the QPSK and 16QAM modulation in the richly scattered Rayleigh flat-fading channel. The received signals from each receivers is independently detected by the receiver using Fincke & Pohst SD algorithm, and the BER output of the algorithm is compared with those of ZF, MMSE, SIC, and ML receivers. We also investigate the Viterbo & Boutros SD algorithm which is the modified SD algorithm, and the BER performance and the floting point operations of the algorithms are comparatively studied.

  • Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) systems utilizing direct conversion receiver suffer from frequency selective (FS) and frequency independent (FI) phase and gain imbalances caused by imperfect local oscillator and low pass filter. In this paper, we analyze the impacts of the transmit/receive IQ imbalances on the system and propose the estimation and compensation schemes for those imbalances. The preamble signals coded by Alamouti scheme in the frequency domain could be used in the estimation of relatively large IQ imbalances with FS and FI characteristics and the estimation results are used for the compensation of distortions caused by the FI and FS IQ imbalances. The optimal maximum likelihood (ML) receiver or suboptimal ordered successive interference cancallation (OSIC) receiver utilizing the estimation results show symbol error rate (SER) performance improvement compared to zero-forcing (ZF) technique due to diversity gain inherent in the frequency domain IQ imbalances combined with the frequency selective channels.
