Shear strength of non-prismatic steel fiber reinforced concrete beams without stirrups

  • The main aim of this research was to investigate the shear strength of non-prismatic steel fiber reinforced concrete beams under monotonic loading considering different parameters. Experimental program included tests on fifteen non-prismatic reinforced concrete beams divided into three groups. For the first and the second groups, different parameters were taken into consideration which are: steel fibers content, shear span to minimum depth ratio ($a/d_{min}$) and tapering angle (${\alpha}$). The third group was designed mainly to optimize the geometry of the non-prismatic concrete beams with the same concrete volume while the steel fiber ratio and the shear span were left constant in this group. The presence of steel fibers in concrete led to an increase in the load-carrying capacity in a range of 10.25%-103%. Also, the energy absorption capacity was increased due to the addition of steel fibers in a range of 18.17%-993.18% and the failure mode was changed from brittle to ductile. Tapering angle had a clear effect on the shear strength of test specimens. The increase in tapering angle from ($7^{\circ}$) to ($12^{\circ}$) caused an increase in the ultimate shear capacity for the test specimens. The maximum increase in ultimate load was 45.49%. The addition of steel fibers had a significant impact on the post-cracking behavior of the test specimens. Empirical equation for shear strength prediction at cracking limit state was proposed. The predicted cracking shear strength was in good agreement with the experimental findings.

The Physico-Chemical Properties and Cooking Qualities of Barley Isogenic Lines (보리 Isogenic Lines의 이화학적 품질과 취반특성)

  • This study is presented to investigate the physico-chemical properties and qualities for the starch isogenic lines bred in barley(Hordeum vulgare L.).The pearling yield showed higher value in Franubet and Wafranubet than others, but the whiteness of pearled barley varied with the cultivars. The milling rate showed excellence in Franubet, fractured granular lines, whereas that of the waxy and round endosperm isogenic lines is poor. Franubet, the lines having fractures starch granule, was highest in starch content. The highest value in swelling power and water-binding capacity of the barley was proved by the lines having waxy and fractured starch endosperms. The amylogram patterns indicated that the waxy lines such as Wanubet and Wafranubet have lower initial gelatinization temperature and higher maximum viscosity than those of the normal lines. ${\beta}-Glucan\;viscosity$ was generally higher in waxy barley but changed greatly with the cultivars. The water absorption, soluble solid and expansibility in cooking property showed the highest value in waxy and fractured starch granular lines, and the whiteness of cooked barley did not differ with cultivars.

  • The Fe complex formation of cyanidin-3-glucoside in acetate buffer solution $(pH1.7{\sim}6.0)$ was investigated spectrophotometically. Two different complexes were formed from cyanidin-3-glucoside and $Fe^{3+}$, which had the absorption maximum at 543nm in the pH range $3.0{\sim}4.0$ and at 570nm in the pH range $5.0{\sim}6.0$ respectively. The molar ratio of the complex formed in the lower pH range was appeared to be 1 : 1, whereas that of the complex formed in the upper pH range was not able to be determined definitely. Among several organic acids examined, citric acid has shown the marked inhibitory effect on the Fe-anthocyanin complex formation.

Isolation and characteristics of yellow-pigment producing mutants of Monascus anka. (Monascus anka로부터 황색소 생성 변이주의 분리 및 특성)

  • To produce yellow pigment selectively, mutants were induced from Monascus anka Nakazawa et Sato IFO 4478 (KCCM 11832 strain), and their characteristics were evaluated. Five kinds of auxotrophic mutants which required amino acids for growth and pigmentation, were isolated through a series of mutagenic treatments. Especially, asparagine auxotroph Y7 produced high ratio of yellow pigment. This mutant showed all the morphological characteristics of Monascuceae but the shape of colony and the diameter of conidia. Mutant Y7 was propagated by sexual reproduction more often than asexual reproduction, which could be effective in production of pigments. Yellow pigment produced extracellularly by the mutant Y7 was more soluble in polar solvents such as ethanol and water than in nonpolar solvents. Its productivity of yellow pigment was 2.2 times higher in the mutant Y7 than in parents. In addition, its yellow pigment showed characteristics of maximum absorption at 373 nm. Moreover, the hue of pigment produced by the mutant Y7 was bright yellow, and it was stable through the subculture over 10 generations.

  • Plasma spraying method was used to fabricated the microwave absorbing ferrite-silicon carbide on the aluminum-alloy of the fuselage of an aircraft to protect it from RADAR detection. In this paper 15[rm] instead of 34[rm], the mean size of SIC-powder for ferrite-silicon carbide surface films(I) was used. 50(Kg/h) Instead of 70(Kg/h), the powder feed and 100[mm] Instead of 80(mm), spray distance of spray parameters was used. This M/W absorbers were designed experimentally and fabricated trially, as a result of which the relative frequency bandwidth of 2.8% were obtained under the tolerance limits of the reflection coefficients lower than-10[dB], and the maximum absorption thickness becomes 0.5[mm], which is much thinner than that of the conventional ones.

  • Blast furnace slag(BFS) is a by-product generated during the manufacture of pig ion, and is divided into water-cooled slag(WS) and air-cooled slag(AS) by the coking method of BFS. In this study, concrete specimens with ternary binders were produced at the various replacement levels of cement by AS. Various mechanical properties of concrete, such as compressive and split tensile strengths, absorption and water permeable pore, were measured. In addition, the chloride ions penetration resistance and carbonation resistance were tested to evaluate the durability of concrete incorporating AS. The experimental data indicated that the use of AS up to a maximum of 10% replacement level enhanced the concrete performance. However, a higher replacement of AS exhibited poor mechanical properties and concrete durability.

A Study on Characterization of Polyethylene Separators Irradiated at Various Electron Beam Current Conditions (다양한 전자선 전류 조건에서 조사된 폴리에틸렌 분리막의 특성 연구)

  • In this paper, crosslinked polyethylene (PE) separators for lithium secondary batteries were prepared by an electron beam irradiation under various beam currents and dose rates. The crosslinking degree increased up to maximum 71% with an increasing absorption dose and with a decreasing beam current. The PE separators irradiated at lower beam currents showed better thermal shrinkage (51%) and mechanical properties than the original PE separator and PE separators irradiated at higher beam current. The ionic conductivity ($1.01{\times}10^{-3}\;S/cm$) and electrolyte uptake (275%) of the crosslinked PE separators were comparable to the original PE separator.

Changes of the Osmolarity in Embryonic Body Fluid and the Maternal Ovarian Tissue of the Viviparous Teleost, Ditrema temmincki, during the Gestation Period (태생 경골어류, 망상어(Ditrema temmincki)의 임신기 동안 체내자어의 체액삼투압 및 모체 난소조직상의 변화)

  • Dry weight and body fluid osmolarity of embryo, and maternal ovarian fluid and the ovarian inner tissue of the viviparous teleost, Ditrema temmincki, changed considerably during the gestation period. After the complete absorption of the egg yolk, average dry weight of the embryo increased to 373.76 mg, and the range of total length (TL) was from 6.0 to 60.0 mm. Osmolarity of the embryonic body fluid was 796,8 mOsmol/kg with TL 64.0 mm right before parturition. Ovarian outer membrane started to swelling clearly after fertilization, and maximized in March. The swelling of ovigerous folds was maximized in late April. Expansion of blood vessels and increase of hemocytes reached to their maximum right before parturition. The results of this study indicated that these changes are related to the nutritional and environmental adaptation of both the embryo and the maternal body during the gestation period.

  • A styrene solution of waste expanded polystyrene with a crosslinking agent and an initiator was used as a binder for waste wood-plastic composite panels. The waste wood-plastic composite panels are prepared with various binder contents and filler-binder ratios by using a hot press molding method. The apparent density of the composite panels is increased with increasing binder content and filler-binder ratio, while their water absorption and expansion in thickness are decreased with increasing binder content and filler-binder ratio. The maximum flexural strength and wet flexural strength of the composite panels are obtained at a binder content of 35% and a filler-binder ratio of 0.8. Decreases in the flexural strengths of the composite panels due to water immersion at 20 and $100^{\circ}C$ are hardly recognized at binder contents of 30% or more.

Dye-binding Capacities of Proteins using Coomassie blue G250 in an Acidic Solution (단백질과 색소(色素) Comassie blue G250과의 결합능력)

  • Commassie blue G250 produced metachromatic effect with some solvents. The absorptivity and molar absorptivity of the dye in ethanol were 82.4 and $70.4{\times}10^3$ at maximum absorption wavelength 610nm, respectively. The dye had a red from$({\lambda}_m=465nm)$ in ethanol-phosphoric acid-water solution and converted to a blue form$({\lambda}_m=590nm)$ after binding to protein. Absorbance at 590nm gave linear responses with respect to protein contents. The dye-binding capacities of proteins varied considerably with the content and source of proteins. Under the experimental condition the dye-binding capacities of bovine serum albumin, cytochrome C and ${\gamma}-globulin$ were 110, 103, and $88{\mu}g$ commassie blue G250 bound per $100{\mu}g$ protein, respectively.
