A co-authorship network analysis on mathematics education scholars (수학교육 연구자의 공동출판 연결망)

  • In this study, we investigated the structure of the mathematics education scholars' co-authorship relationship in papers registered at the National Research Foundation of Korea by social network analysis. The data were 354 scholars from 257 papers in 4 journals from 2009 to 2013 based on 'the 2009 revised Korean National Curriculum'. For the analysis, Pajek3 and UCINET6.3 were used. The results of this study were as follows: First, each of the mathematics education scholars is connected on average with about 5 paths of intermediate collaborators. Second, Analyses of the first component group found distinguishable scholar groups' characteristics depending on their affiliations, majors, and job statuses. Third, there were scholars having high values in network degree centrality measures despite not having high numbers in published papers. On the contrary, there sere scholars having high numbers in published papers despite not having high values in network analysis. Finally, I suggested the directions for the future research with the limitations of this study.

Development of a Product Oriented Group for Mathematics Teachers Professional Growth

  • A research group consisting of some mathematics education scholars and school teachers has been formed to build a website which intended to combine both theories and practices of mathematical teaching since 2002. There were three working stages: video-tapping realistic math teaching, developing video discs of different themes, and designing e-Learning. The group members learned knowledge of teaching by actual participating. On the other hand, the products enabled the audience to get professional development in knowledge of both mathematics and teaching. Management process of this group and effects upon the participants and users will be presented and discussed in this paper.   • This survey is to know the present situation and effective alternatives of mathematics gifted education program for the 5-8 grade students in Korea. This is aiming at finding effective ideas useful to the definition of the gifted, the development of the methods and tools for identification, the proper organization of program and urgent issues. The number of collected questionnaire available by mailing is 92; 21 specialists, 24 experienced teachers and 47 scholars who are concerned with the education for the gifted. On the Birth of a Journal on College Mathematics Education (대학수학교육을 위한 학술지의 발간에 즈음하여)

  • We would like to celebrate the birth of a journal on college mathematics education. We make wishes and hopes on the way of the growth and developments of the journal. We especially emphasize that the journal may provide the streams of knowledges from scholars to students for better accomplishments of college mathematics educations and the development and prosperity of our country, and a storage bank for our own (mathematical) knowledges for the creation of Korea's own mathematical traditions.   • This paper is trying to answer the following two questions: "How does it likely to happen that the same content of mathematics is quite differently taught by classroom teachers\ulcorner" and "What would cause these differences in the teaching and learning of mathematics\ulcorner" According to scholars, teachers' beliefs about mathematics and the teaching and learning of mathematics should be first considered when the educational phenomena taking place in classroom are analyzed and interpreted. Understanding the developmental process of a mathematics teacher's competencies in mathematical modeling: A study conducted by Jung (2023)

  • Mathematics educators have examined mathematical modeling, where students tackle authentic real-life problems and develop problem-solving strategies with a sense of agency. However, few empirical studies have been conducted to illuminate the developmental process of teachers' competencies in mathematical modeling, particularly for elementary school teachers. Scholars have noted that elementary mathematics teachers can effectively teach mathematical modeling by designing tasks that consider students' abilities and preferences. In this vein, this review paper introduces a study conducted by Jung (2023), which examines the developmental process of an elementary school mathematics teacher's competencies in mathematical modeling and how she overcame related challenges.

  • The gender differences of mathematics achievement exists in many counties in the world. Some Chinese scholars think that the differences also exist in China. The researchers explain the gender differences of mathematics learning mainly from the individual psychology and education. This paper, firstly, introduces an investigation of the gender differences of mathematics achievement in grade 1-9 in three areas (Hefei urban area, Cuozhen area, and Chenji area) of Hefei in China. The investigation found that the gender differences of mathematics achievement exist but are different in these areas. Then, the results are explained from the theory of the gender socialization.

  • Presently, there has been growing interests in using mathematics' history in teaching mathematics [Katz, V. & Tzanakis, C. (Eds.) (2011). Recent Developments on Introducing a Historical Dimension in Mathematics Education. Washington, DC: Mathematical Association of America]. Thus, this article introduces some work of scholars from ancient East Indian culture like Bhaskara (AD 1114-1185) and Arabic culture such as Ibn Qurrah (AD 9th c) that are related to Pythagoras Theorem. In addition, some Babylonian creative works related to Pythagorean triples found in a tablet known as 'Plimpton 322', and an application of the Pythagorean Theorem found in another tablet named 'Yale Tablet' are presented. Applications of computer animation of dissection Motion Operations concept in 2D and 3D using dynamic software like Geometer's-Sketchpad and Cabri-II-and-3D. Nowadays, creative minds are attracted by the recent stampede in the advances of technological applications in visual literacy; consequently, innovative environments that would help young students, gifted or not, acquiring meaningful conceptual understanding would immerge.

  • Fusion and consilience have been important in many aspects of our education and culture. In this flow 2015 revised National Curriculum aimed to cultivate students of abilities of imagining liberally and inventing scientifically and technically. However imagination including imagination in humanities has not been researched in mathematics education part until nowadays, so mathematics education using imagination of raising students with ingenious and harmonizing abilities is hard to discuss concretely. In this paper I studied the opinions of various scholars from ancient times to today, and discussed where imagination reveals itself in mathematics practices. With above results I discussed some possible shape of teaching and learning of mathematics using imagination. And finally we discussed that meanings in the humanities and social aspects.

The Present Situations and Subjects of Mathematics Education in Japan (일본의 산수.수학교육의 현상과 과제)

  • The mathematics education circles in Japan has a variety of subjects. I want to speak w generally are considered on those subjects. Some of these subjects are as follows: (1) The ratio of students who go on to high schools is about 95 percent, so that it is h to solve how to design the mathematics curriculum for the poor scholars. (2) Though the effects of instruction at the schools does not betray the nation's trust, JUKU increase in number. Thus all teachers in schools cannot but endeavor to fulfil the responsibility. (3) Some of the junior high school's teachers suffer from the misconducts and violences pupils. Thus researchers of mathematics education in such schools tend to stagnate. 4) The tudents and pupils get good results in the examinations of calculation, but in the examinations such as word problems that require their judgements not so. Etc. t is not easy to solve or cope with the these subjects. or the subjects as (3), all teachers concentrate their efforts on the activation of lessons the heightening the pupil's will to learn. or the subjects as (4), the idea of mathematical thinking has be advocated since about 1960, recently the 'problem solving' are proposed and are studying. Lastly the researchers in the university are theorizing their own works and digest and utilize arge foreign's literatures. Furthermore a great number of teachers make an effort to research their calssrooms. But a great part of the results of their researches are utilized only in country. I hope, hereafter, that the effects of researches in Japan become known and ized to the foreign countries.
