  • In order to upgrade the seismic resistibility of structures and enhance the functionality of an isolator, a new base isolator called the multiple trench friction pendulum system (MTFPS) is proposed in this study. The proposed MTFPS isolator is composed of a trench concave surface and several intermediate sliding plates in two orthogonal directions. Mathematical formulations have been derived to examine the characteristics of the proposed MTFPS isolator possessing numerous intermediate sliding plates. By means of mathematical formulations which have been validated by experimental results of bidirectional ground shaking, it can be inferred that the natural period and damping effect of the MTFPS isolator with several intermediate sliding plates can be altered continually and controllably during earthquakes. Furthermore, results obtained from the component and shaking table tests demonstrate that the proposed isolator provides good protection to structures for prevention of damage from strong earthquakes.

  • The motivation in this paper comes from the recent results about Bell inequalities and topological insulators from group theory. Symmetries which are interested in group theory could be mainly used to find material structures. In this point of views, we study group extending by adding one relator which is easily called an equation. So a relative group extension by a adding relator is aspherical if the natural injection is one-to-one and the group ring has no zero divisor. One of concepts of asphericity means that a new group by a adding relator is well extended. Also, we consider that several equations and relative presentations over torsion-free groups are related to zero divisors.

  • In this article, we associate a contact structure to the conjugacy class of a periodic surface homeomorphism, encoded by a combinatorial tuple of integers called a marked data set. In particular, we prove that infinite families of these data sets give rise to Stein fillable contact structures with associated monodromies that do not factor into products to positive Dehn twists. In addition to the above, we give explicit constructions of symplectic fillings for rational open books analogous to Mori's construction for honest open books. We also prove a sufficient condition for the Stein fillability of rational open books analogous to the positivity of monodromy for honest open books due to Giroux and Loi-Piergallini.

  • The Clifford algebra of a direct sum of real quadratic spaces appears as the superalgebra tensor product of the Clifford algebras of the summands. The purpose of the current paper is to present a purely settheoretical version of the superalgebra tensor product which will be applicable equally to groups or to their non-associative analogues - quasigroups and loops. Our work is part of a project to make supersymmetry an effective tool for the study of combinatorial structures. Starting from group and quasigroup structures on four-element supersets, our superproduct unifies the construction of the eight-element quaternion and dihedral groups, further leading to a loop structure which hybridizes the two groups. All three of these loops share the same character table.

  • The majority of real world frontal collisions involves partial overlap (offset) collision, in which only one of the two longitudinal members is used for energy absorption. This leads to dangerous intrusions of the passenger compartment. Excessive intrusion is usually generated on the impacted side causing higher contact injury risk on the occupants compared with full frontal collision. The ideal structure needs to have extendable length when the front-end structure is not capable to absorb crash energy without violating deceleration pulse requirements. A smart structure has been proposed to meet this ideal requirement. The proposed front-end structure consists of two hydraulic cylinders integrated with the front-end longitudinal members of standard vehicles. The work carried out in this paper includes developing and analyzing mathematical models of two different cases representing vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-barrier in full and offset collisions. By numerical crash simulations, this idea has been evaluated and optimized. It is proven form numerical simulations that the smart structures bring significantly lower intrusions and decelerations. In addition, it is shown that the mathematical models are valid, flexible, and can be used in an effective way to give a quick insight of real life crashes.

  • This article presents a unified mathematical model to investigate free and forced vibration responses of perforated thin and thick beams. Analytical models of the equivalent geometrical and material characteristics for regularly squared perforated beam are developed. Because of the shear deformation regime increasing in perforated structures, the investigation of dynamical behaviors of these structures becomes more complicated and effects of rotary inertia and shear deformation should be considered. So, both Euler-Bernoulli and Timoshenko beam theories are proposed for thin and short (thick) beams, respectively. Mathematical closed forms for the eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenvectors as well as the forced vibration time response are derived. The validity of the developed analytical procedure is verified by comparing the obtained results with both analytical and numerical analyses and good agreement is detected. Numerical studies are presented to illustrate effects of beam slenderness ratio, filling ratio, as well as the number of holes on the dynamic behavior of perforated beams. The obtained results and concluding remarks are helpful in mechanical design and industrial applications of large devices and small systems (MEMS) based on perforated structure.

  • A mathematical modelling technique is proposed for estimating the additional bending stresses of tube(s)-in-tube structures due to tube-tube interaction, which has a significant effects on the shear-lag phenomenon. The proposed method simulates the framed-tube structures with multiple internal tubes as equivalent multiple tubes, each composed of four equivalent orthotropic plate panels. Hence, the tube(s)-in-tube structure can be analysed by using an analogy approach where each tube is individually modelled by a continuous beam that can account for the flexural and shear deformations as well as the shear-lag effects. The numerical analysis is applicable for the structural analysis of framed-tube structures with single and multiple internal tubes, as well as those without internal tubes. The shear-lag phenomenon of such structures is studied with additiona] bending stresses and shear-lag reversal points.

  • Seismic isolation systems are essentially designed to preserve structural safety, prevent occupants injury and properties damage. An active saturated LMI-based control design is proposed to attenuate seismic disturbances in base-isolated structures under saturation actuators. Using a mathematical model of an eight-storied building structure, an active control algorithm is designed. Performance evaluation of the controller is carried out in a simplified model version of a benchmark building system, which is recognized as a state-of-the-art model for numerical experiments of structures under seismic perturbations. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm is robust with respect to model and seismic perturbations. Finally, the performance indices show that the proposed controller behaves satisfactorily and with a reasonable control effort.

  • This paper presents results of calculations performed according to our own semi-empirical mathematical model of critical vortex excitation. All calculations are carried out using own computer program, which allows the simulation of both the across-wind action caused by vortices and the lateral response of analysed structures. Vortex excitation simulations were performed in real time taking into account wind-structure interaction. Several structures of circular cross-sections were modelled using a FEM program and calculated under the action of critical vortex excitation. Six steel chimneys, six concrete chimneys and two concrete towers were considered. The method of selection and estimation of the experimental parameters describing the model are also presented. Finally, the results concerning maximum lateral top displacements of the structures are compared with available full-scale data for steel and concrete chimneys.

  • We introduce a notion of ternary distributive algebraic structure, give examples, and relate it to the notion of a quandle. Classification is given for low order structures of this type. Constructions of such structures from 3-Lie algebras are provided. We also describe ternary distributive algebraic structures coming from groups and give examples from vector spaces whose bases are elements of a finite ternary distributive set. We introduce a cohomology theory that is analogous to Hochschild cohomology and relate it to a formal deformation theory of these structures.
