Complex number on textbooks and Analysis on understanding state of students (교과서에 표현된 복소수와 이에 대한 학생들의 이해 실태 분석)

  • In this study, contents of 'the 2007 revised curriculum handbook' and 16 kinds of mathematics textbooks were analyzed first. The purpose of this study is to examine the understanding state of students at general high schools by making questionnaires to survey the understanding state on contents of chapter of complex number based on above analysis. Results of research can be summarized as follows. First, the content of chapter of complex number in textbook was not logically organized. In the introduction of imaginary number unit, two kinds of marks were presented without any reason and it has led to two kinds of notation of negative square root. There was no explanation of difference between delimiter symbol and operator symbol at all. The concepts were presented as definition without logical explanations. Second, students who learned with textbook in which problems were pointed out above did not have concept of complex number for granted, and recognized it as expansion of operation of set of real numbers. It meant that they were confused of operation of complex numbers and did not form the image about number system itself of complex number. Implications from this study can be obtained as follows. First, as we came over to the 7th curriculum, the contents of chapter of complex number were too abbreviated to have the logical configuration of chapter in order to remove the burden for learning. Therefore, the quantitative expansion and logical configuration fit to the level for high school students corresponding to the formal operating stage are required for correct configuration of contents of chapter. Second, teachers realize the importance of chapter of complex number and reconstruct the contents of chapter to let students think conceptually and logically.

  • Manddelberg [9] has shown that a Clifford algebra of a free quadratic space over an arbitrary semi-local ring R in Brawer-Wall group BW(R) is determined by its rank, determinant, and Hasse invariant. In this paper, we prove a corresponding result when R is a full ring.Throughout this paper, unless otherwise specified, we assume that R is a commutative ring having 2 a unit. A quadratic space (V, B, .phi.) over R is a finitely generated projective R-module V with a symmetric bilinear mapping B: V*V.rarw.R which is non-degenerate (i.e., the natural mapping V.rarw.Ho $m_{R}$(V,R) induced by B is an isomorphism), and with a quadratic mapping .phi.: V.rarw.R such that B(x,y)=1/2(.phi.(x+y)-.phi.(x)-.phi.(y)) and .phi.(rx) = $r^{2}$.phi.(x) for all x, y in V and r in R. We denote the group of multiplicative units of R by U9R). If (V, B, .phi.) is a free rank n quadratic space over R with an orthogonal basis { $x_{1}$,.., $x_{n}$}, we will write < $a_{1}$,.., $a_{n}$> for (V, B, .phi.) where the $a_{i}$=.phi.( $x_{i}$) are in U(R), and denote the space by the table [ $a_{ij}$ ] where $a_{ij}$ =B( $x_{i}$, $x_{j}$). In the case n=2 and B( $x_{1}$, $x_{2}$)=1/2 we reserve the notation [a $a_{11}$, $a_{22}$] for the space. The analysis of the concept of equal symbol and the investigation of the students' understanding of it (등호 개념의 분석 및 학생들의 등호 이해 조사)

  • This study analyzed the concept of equal symbol(=) that is the most symbol used in learning of mathematics and investigated students' understanding of that. The equal symbol is endowed with the 'same', 'equal', and 'equivalent' meaning, represented by =, but students interpret the meaning of equal symbol according to the mathematical con text. Thus, we analyzed the equal symbol on the basis of the theory of conceptual fields. In the theory of conceptual fields, concept is a three-tuple of three sets of situation, operational invariants and symbolic representations, and the operational invariants are the concept-in-action and the theorems- in-action. With the analysis contents, we investigated how students read = by korean, what equals in the expression containing = or by what meaning students used =, and which they could correct the error for =. This study imply that we should consider the symbol notation agreed by mathematical society, the meaning, and the situational context that it used, when we teach the mathematics symbols.

Comparative Research on Teaching Method for Multiplication by 2-Digit Numbers in Elementary Mathematics Textbooks of Korea, Japan, Singapore, and USA (한국, 일본, 싱가포르, 미국의 초등교과서에 제시된 곱하는 수가 두 자리 수인 자연수 곱셈 지도 내용의 비교 분석)

  • In this study, we investigated how multiplication by 2-digit numbers had been taught in elementary mathematics textbooks of Korea, Japan, Singapore, and USA. As a result of analysis, we found as follows. Korean textbooks do not teach the multiplication by 10 and the multiplication by power of 10, but Japanese, Singapore, and US textbooks explicitly teach related content. In the '×tens' teaching, Japanese and American textbooks teach formally the law of association of multiplication applied in the process of calculating the partial product of multiplication. The standard multiplication algorithm generally followed a standard method of recording partial product result according to the law of distribution, but the differences were confirmed in the multiplication model, the teaching method of the law of distribution, and the notation of the last digit '0'. Based upon these results, we suggested some proposals for improving the multiplication teaching.

A Study on the Publishing and Transmission of Mathematics Books Using Traditional Korean Book List and the Catalogues of Woodblocks 1 -Focusing on mathematics textbooks of national mathematical examinations 算學取才 in the first half of Joseon Dynasty- (전근대시기 한국의 책판목록(冊板目錄)과 도서목록을 통한 산학서 (算學書)의 간행과 유전(流傳) 고찰 1 -조선전기 산학취재(算學取才) 교과서의 간행을 중심으로-)

  • We considered the context of the publications and transmissions of mathematics books using the Korean traditional book lists and the catalogues of woodblocks in the Joseon Dynasty and DaeHan大韓 Empire period. Among the results, this paper first describes the context of the publication and transmission of mathematics textbooks of national math exams算學取才 in the first half of Joseon, adding a step more specific to the facts known so far. In 1430, 『YangHui SanFa楊輝算法』, 『XiangMing SuanFa詳明算法』, 『SuanXue QiMeng算學啓蒙』, 『DiSuan地算』, 『WuCao SuanJing五曹算經』 were selected as the textbooks of national math exams算學取才. 『YangHui SanFa』, 『XiangMing SuanFa』, 『DiSuan』 were included in the catalogues of woodblocks in the Joseon Dynasty before the Japanese invasion in 1592, and we could see that Gyeongju慶州, Chuncheon春川, and Wonju原州 were the printing centers of these books. Through other lists, literature records and real text books, it came out into the open that 『XiangMing SuanFa』 was published as movable print books three times at least, 『SuanXue QiMeng』 four times at least in the first half of Joseon Dynasty. And 『XiangMing SuanFa』 was published at about 100 years later than 『YangHui SanFa楊輝算法』 as xylographic books, 『SuanXue QiMeng』 was published twice as xylographic books in the second half of Joseon Dynasty. Whether or not the list of royal books included the Korean or Chinese versions of these books, and additional notation in that shows how the royal estimation of these books changed.

Probabilistic analysis of efficiencies for sorting algorithms with a finite number of records based on an asymptotic algorithm analysis (점근적 분석 모형에 기초한 유한개 레코드 정렬 알고리즘 효율성의 확률적 분석)

  • The Big O notation of a sorting algorithm analysis is an asymptotic algorithm analysis which gives information of a rough mathematical function with an infinite increase of a sample size, without any specification of a probabilistic model. Hence. in an application with a limited finite number of data, it is necessary to test efficiencies of sorting algorithms. I estimated probabilistic models which analyze the number of exchanges varying input sizes to sort. The estimated models to explain the relationship of sorting efficiency on the sample size (N of the sample size and S of the number of exchange of elements) are S=0.9305 $N^{1.339}$ for Quick sort algorithm with O(nlogn) time complexity, and S=0.2232 $N^{2.0130}$ for Insertion sort algorithm with O( $n^2$) time complexity. Furthermore, there are strongly supports that more than 99% of the above relationship could be explained by the estimated models (p<0.001). These findings suggest it is necessary to analyze sorting algorithm efficiency in applications with a finite number of data or a newly developed sorting algorithm.

  • In the recent years there has been an increase of service competition in the activity of product selling, especially in the extension of warranty coverage and qualify. The variables in connection with the service competition are not crisp, and required the expertise of the production line. It thus becomes all the more necessary to use subtler tools as decision supports. These problems are typical not only of product companies but also of financial organizations, credit institutions, insurance, which need predictions of credibility for firms or persons in which they have any kind of interest. A suitable approach for minimizing the risk is to use a knowledge-based system. Most often expert systems are not standalone programs, but are embedded into a larger application. The aim of this paper is to discuss an approach for developing an embedded fuzzy expert system with respect to the product selling policy, especially to present the decision system of automobile selling activity around the extension of warranty coverage and quality. We use the MATLAB tools which integrates computation, visualization, and programming in an easy-to-use environment where problems and solutions are expressed in familiar mathematical notation. Also, we present the API functions embedding into the existing application.

Thermal Design of Electronic for Controlling X-band Antenna of Compact Advanced Satellite (차세대 중형위성 탑재 X-밴드 안테나 구동용 전자유닛 APD 열설계 및 열해석)

  • The APD (Antenna Pointing Driver) is an electronic equipment tool that is used to drive the two-axis gimbal-type antenna for the image data transmission of CAS (Compact Advanced Satellite). In this study, a heat dissipation of EEE (Electrical, Electronic and Electromechanical) is reviewed, to identify the parts that directly affected its efficiency, lifetime as well as the reliability of the structure. This event eventually incurs a failure of the EEE part itself, or even the entire satellite system as noted in experiments in this case. To guarantee reliability of electronic equipment during the mission, the junction temperature of EEE parts is considered a significant and important design factor, and subsequently must be secured within the allowable range. Therefore, the notation of the thermal analysis considering the derating is indispensable, and a proper thermal mathematical model should be constructed for this case. In this study, the thermal design and thermal analysis are performed to confirm the temperature requirement of the APD. In addition, we noted that the validity of the thermal model, according to each of the identified modeling methods, was therefore compared through the thermal analysis utilized in this case.
