Forest fires are expected to increase in severity and frequency under global climate change and thus better understanding of fire dynamics is critical for mitigation and adaptation. Researchers with different background, such as ecologists, physicists, and mathematical biologists, have developed various simulation models to reproduce forest fire spread dynamics. However, these models have limitations in the fire spreading because of the complicated factors such as fuel types, wind, and moisture. In this study, we suggested a simple model considering the wind effect and two different fuel types. The two fuels correspond to susceptible tree and resistant tree with different probabilities of transferring fire. The trees were randomly distributed in simulation space with a density ranging from 0.0 (low) to 1.0 (high). The susceptible tree had higher value of the probability than the resistant tree. Based on the number of burnt trees, we then carried out the sensitivity analysis to quantify how the forest fire patterns are affected by wind and tree density. The statistical analysis showed that the total tree density had greatest effect on the forest fire spreading and wind had the next greatest effect. The density of the susceptible tree was relatively lower factor affecting the forest fire. We believe that our model can be a useful tool to explore forest fire spreading patterns.
Problem solving is important in school mathematics as the means and end of mathematics education. In elementary school, inductive reasoning is closely linked to problem solving. The purpose of this study was to examine ways of improving problem solving ability through analysis of inductive reasoning process. After the process of inductive reasoning in problem solving was analyzed, five different stages of inductive reasoning were selected. It's assumed that the flow of inductive reasoning would begin with stage 0 and then go on to the higher stages step by step, and diverse sorts of additional inductive reasoning flow were selected depending on what students would do in case of finding counter examples to a regulation found by them or to their inference. And then a case study was implemented after four elementary school students who were in their sixth grade were selected in order to check the appropriateness of the stages and flows of inductive reasoning selected in this study, and how to teach inductive reasoning and what to teach to improve problem solving ability in terms of questioning and advising, the creation of student-centered class culture and representation were discussed to map out lesson plans. The conclusion of the study and the implications of the conclusion were as follows: First, a change of teacher roles is required in problem-solving education. Teachers should provide students with a wide variety of problem-solving strategies, serve as facilitators of their thinking and give many chances for them ide splore the given problems on their own. And they should be careful entegieto take considerations on the level of each student's understanding, the changes of their thinking during problem-solving process and their response. Second, elementary schools also should provide more intensive education on justification, and one of the best teaching methods will be by taking generic examples. Third, a student-centered classroom should be created to further the class participation of students and encourage them to explore without any restrictions. Fourth, inductive reasoning should be viewed as a crucial means to boost mathematical creativity.
This paper presents a mathematical formulation for container slot chartering model through strategic alliance between liner shipping companies. This paper develops a solution procedure to apply the model to real world problems and its applicability is demonstrated by a numerical example. The model presented in this paper has some important features which have never been considered in the previous researches. The model is linear model and pursuits profit maximization. And also it considers slot chartering capacity selection. This paper attempts to perform sensitivity analysis and compares slot chartering model with basic non-collaborating model in which there is no alliance and collaboration. As a result of sensitivity analysis, some interesting findings are obtained; Even though freight rate is more and more decreasing, the profit by slot chartering model is always higher than the basic model but the profit gaps become smaller. But The ratio of the profit gap to the profit of basic model is more increasing.

South Korea places the core of public education in school education, and textbooks are compiled based on curriculum announced by the Education Ministry. Therefore, the compilation of high-quality textbooks is very important and requires more than just revising the curriculum. Korea had been working on developing textbooks several times, but it has been evaluated as a uniform textbook in terms of external system and editing design compared to advanced foreign textbooks. This can be said to be the result of the based to only the textbook's internal system, which should be dealt with in the textbook when compiling the textbook. The textbooks which were developed at seventh curriculum were made remarkable changes in the history of South Korea textbooks. In this study, we want to examine the nation's state-authored textbooks, from the seventh textbook to the current textbook in 2015 by order of magnitude and to give a careful look at what aspects of the changes are being made. To this end, the composition of textbooks is analyzed by dividing them into external and internal systems. The external system of textbooks focuses on changes in plate form, shape, lipid, color, and illustration, while the internal system focuses on changes in the composition system of the unit, the composition system of the contents by lesson, and the style of question. As a result, we led to a significant conclusion on the changes in textbooks.

Because of the important role LD converters play in the production of high quality steel, various dynamic models have been attempted in the past by many researchers not only to understand the complex chemical reactions that take place in the converter process but also to assist the converter operation itself using computers. And yet no single dynamic model was found to be completely satisfactory because of the complexity involved with the process. The process indeed involves dynamic energy and mass balances at high temperatures accompanied by complex chemical reactions and transport phenomena in the molten state. In the present study, a mathematical model describing the dynamic behavior of LD converter process has been developed. The dynamic model describes the time behavior of the temperature and the concentrations of chemical species in the hot metal bath and slag. The analysis was greatly facilitated by dividing the entire process into three zones according to the physical boundaries and reaction mechanisms. These three zones were hot metal (zone 1), slag (zone 2) and emulsion (zone 3) zones. The removal rate of Si, C, Mn and P and the rate of Fe oxidation in the hot metal bath, and the change of composition in the slag were obtained as functions of time, operating conditions and kinetic parameters. The temperature behavior in the metal bath and the slag was also obtained by considering the heat transfer between the mixing and the slag zones and the heat generated from chemical reactions involving oxygen blowing. To identify the unknown parameters in the equations and simulate the dynamic model, Hooke and Jeeves parttern search and Runge-Kutta integration algorithm were used. By testing and fitting the model with the data obtained from the operation of POSCO #2 steelmaking plant, the dynamic model was able to predict the characteristics of the main components in the LD converter. It was possible to predict the optimum CO gas recovery by computer simulation
This study focuses on the categorization of the phenomenon of vegetative recruitment on riparian channels, so called, the phenomenon from "white river" to "green river", and proposes for the corresponding research direction. According to the literature review and research outputs obtained from the authors' previous research performed in Korea within a limited scope, the necessary and sufficient conditions for the recruitment and retrogression of riparian vegetation may be the mechanical disturbance (riverbed tractive stress), soil moisture (groundwater level, topography, composition of riverbed material, precipitation etc.), period of submergence, extreme weather, and nutrient inflow. In this study, two categories, one for the reduction in spring flood due to the change in spring precipitation pattern in unregulated rivers and the other for the increase in nutrient inflow into streams, both of which were partially proved, have been added in the categorization of the vegetative recruitment and retrogression on the riparian channels. In order to scientifically investigate further the phenomenon of the riparian vegetative recruitment and retrogression and develop the working riparian vegetative models, it is necessary to conduct a systematic nationwide survey on the "white to green" rivers, establishment of the categorization of the vegetation recruitment and retrogression based on the proof of those hypotheses and detailed categorization, development of the working mathematical models for the dynamic riparian vegetative recruitment and retrogression, and adaptive management for the river changes.
As the results of studies based on the Russian Activities-Oriented Theory, the gifted students in many fields have common insights for the true nature of the problem, or the actual state. From Russian Activities-Oriented Theory of view, gifted students have the ability to discern the essential elements involved in each actual state and change of state of things, and to solve the problem, based on these elements. Enhancing these abilities of the students, the educator can develop the average student into a gifted one. This study result of the Russian specialist suggests the possibility of a stream of education that can develop gifted students. Hence, this paper discussed the points and processes of formation of the Russian Activities-Oriented Theory, and inquired on what is the true nature of the problem or the meaning of actual state and how it affects the studies of the student. The paper also investigated the actual conditions of wrong learning about some mathematical concepts and discussed the role of insights to the true nature of the problem in the learning process of the student.
There have been studies reporting the increase in student confidence in mathematics when using technology. However, past studies indicating a positive correlation between technology and confidence in mathematics do not explain why they see this positive outcome. With increased availability and easy access to the Internet in schools and the development of free online virtual manipulatives, this research was interested in how the use of virtual manipulatives in mathematics can affect students confidence in their mathematical abilities. Our hypothesis was that the classes using virtual manipulatives which allows students to connecting dynamic visual image with abstract symbols will help students gain a deeper conceptual understanding of math concept thus increasing their confidence and ability in mathematics. The participants in this study were 46 fifth-grade students in three ability groups: one high, one middle and one low. During a two-week unit on fractions, students in three groups interacted with several virtual manipulative applets in a computer lab. Data sources in the project included a pre and posttest of students mathematics content knowledge, Confidence in Learning Mathematics Scale, field notes and student interviews, and classroom videotapes. Our aim was to find evidence for increased level of confidence in mathematics as students strengthened their understanding of fraction concepts. Results from the achievement score indicated an overall main effect showing significant improvement for all ability groups following the treatment and an increase in the confidence level from the preassessment of the Confidence in Learning Mathematics Scale in the middle and high ability groups. An interesting finding was that the confidence level for the low ability group students who had the highest confidence level in the beginning did not change much in the final confidence scale assessment. In the middle and high ability groups, the confidence level did increase according to the improvement of the contest posttest. Through interviews, students expressed how the virtual manipulatives assisted their understanding by verifying their answers as they worked and facilitated their ability to figure out math concept in their mind and visually.

If a rotor possesses a high gyroscopic coupling or the running speed is high, the dynamical changes in the rotor become prominent. When active magnetic bearings are used to support such rotors, it is necessary for the bearing controller to take these dynamical changes into consideration. Independent-axis controllers, which are the most commonly used, modulate the bearing force solely based on the sensor output of the same axis. However, this type of controller has difficulties in overcoming the dynamical changes. On the other hand, mixed-axis controllers transform the sensor output into components corresponding to the vibrational modes. A separate controller can then be designed for each vibrational mode. In this way, the controller can be designed based on the dynamics of the rotor. In this paper, we describe a design process for a mixed-axis controller that uses a detailed mathematical model of the system. The performance of the controller is evaluated based on the ISO sensitivity requirements and unbalance response, while considering the change in the system dynamics due to the running speed.
A mathematical model and its computer solution program were proposed to analyze the motion of contact lenses which are being subject to lid-blinking. The equation was derived by incorporating an acceleration induced lid's force exerting on the contact lens, the viscous damping resistance in the tear layer beneath the lens and the sliding frictional force between the lid and the contact lens surface into the formulation of differential equation describing the vibration. The model predicts the time-dependent displacement from the equilibrium postion during/after the blinking. During the blinking, as the time for the completion of one cycle of blinking decreases the off-the-equilibrium displacement of contact lens increases while the decrease of diameter in the contact cause the opposite effect. It is found that lid pressure exerting on the lens cause an insignificant lens displacement from the equilibrium position. After blinking the frequency of damped oscillation of contact lens decreases as the diameter of lens increases, due to the incresed surface while the reduced blinking time does not cause a significant frequency change. This is because that driving force for the contact lens movement posterior to blinking is the capillary-induced force not the lid force.
