  • The purpose of this study is to synthesize a comprehensive and general conclusion about the effects of mathematics classes using peer tutoring on the cognitive (mathematics learning achievement) and affective domains. For this purpose, a total of 61 individual studies were meta-analyzed in this study to calculate the effect size, measuring the strength of the relationship between mathematics classes using peer tutoring and either the cognitive or affective domain. As a result of this study, it was confirmed that mathematics classes using peer tutoring generally have a medium effect size in both cognitive and affective domains. Also, it was found that level of school, type of student, learning location, class time, tutor education or prior training are significant variables that affect the impact of mathematics classes using peer tutoring on the cognitive and affective domains. These results suggest specific ideas on how to design and operate peer tutoring in school mathematics classes on the basis of different variables.

  • The 7th national curriculum requires the paradigmatic shift in education from teacher-centered to student-centered instruction. But, teachers beliefs on instruction have not been changed during implementing of the mathematics textbooks based on the curriculum. More exactly speaking, they are changed very slowly. Therefore, some beliefs they should establish in order for them to implement it were discussed: Perspectives of students' intelligent ability, learning goal for the every lesson, the passibility of teaching contents involved in the national curriculum, the size of classroom, and students' achievements.

  • In the engineering education, the difference of student's achievements is one of the problems to make teaching more difficult. To solve this problem, cooperative learning can be adopted to make students study automatically and cooperatively in the small study group. However, it is not easy to achieve substantial cooperation in the study group. In this paper, we propose a method to achieve substantial cooperative learning in the engineering subject requiring mathematical practice. we can vitalize the cooperative learning and improve the student's achievements by using the both of individual and group assessment.

  • Korean students have shown high achievements on the cognitive domain of mathematics in a range of international assessment tests. On the affective domain, however, significantly low achievements have been reported. Among the factors in the affective domain, this article discusses on the value of mathematics in the perspective of Michael Polanyi's philosophy, which centers personal knowledge and tacit knowing. Polanyi emphasizes abstractness and generalization in mathematics accompanied by intellectual beauty and passion. In his perspective, therefore, utilitarian aspects and usefulness of mathematics imparted through linguistic representations have limits in motivating students to learn mathematics. Students must be motivated from recognition of the value of mathematics formed through participating authentic mathematical problem solving activity with immersion, tension, confusion, passion, joy and the like.

  • Elementary mathematics education in the 7th mathematics curricula has been emphasized to foster ‘mathematical power’. For establishing this purpose, we need to provide the opportunities inducing to students' thoughts and to study leaching-learning methods to make structuring for their thinking process. Using to writing activities in students' mathematics learning, we think that we can find out their thinking process and this writing mathematics learning method is effective to promote their communication. Through analysing to six grade mathematics textbooks, we devised to mathematical writing types and teaching/learning models could being utilized in mathematics classes. And we investigated the influence of mathematical writing on the learning ability of students. We have experimented and investigated to after dividing experimental objects into two groups, experimental group and comparative group. We founded out, through these researches for mathematical writing teaming, that the experimental group of the former had obtained greatly better results than the latter in mathematical learning abilities and studying achievements. Based on these result, it is required to have an accumulation of research on teaching-teaming methods by using various types of mathematical writing study.

  • The purpose of this research was to analyze the characteristics of teachers' questionings in the geometry field and suggest the characteristics of teacher questioning to enhance students' mathematical creativity. Teacher questioning plays a role to students' mathematical achievements, mathematical thinking, and their attitudes toward mathematics. However, there has been little research on the roles of teacher questioning on students' mathematical creativity. In this research, researchers analyzed teachers' questions concerning the concepts of triangles in the geometric areas of 4th grade Korean revised 2007 mathematics textbooks. We also analyzed teachers' questionings in the three lessons provided by the Jeju Educational Internet Broadcasting System. We classified and analyzed teachers' questionings by the sub-factors of creativity. The results showed that the teachers did not use the questionings that appropriately enhances students' mathematical creativity. We suggested that teachers need to be prepared to ask questions such as stimulating students' various mathematical thinking, encouraging many possible responses, and not responding with yes/no. Instead, teachers need to encourage students to explain the reasons of their responses and to take part in learning activities with interest.

  • The purpose of this study is to confirm the effects of the learner-centered instruction based on constructivism on learners' reasoning ability and their achievements which is closely related to reflective abstracting ability. To do it, learner-centered instructions for division was implemented, recall test, generation test, content reasoning test I and II were carried out. The following conclusions were drawn from the data we got. Experimental group(EG) improved their reasoning ability, while comparison group(CG) did not. EG showed statistically significant difference in the achievements of the contents learned in comparing with CG, and the difference in the achievements of the contents unlearned in the treatment in comparing with CG was higher than the one. In addition, the comparisons of the subgroups(high, middle, and low) between EG and CG showed that the treatment had a positive influence on the achievement to all subgroups in EG. That is, the treatment was effective for unable learners. Finally, EG showed statistically significant difference in the sub-domain of simple calculation which might be considered as the benefits of the treatment of the CG as well as in the sub-domain of concept and principle.

  • Spatial ability has been valued as one component of intelligence and associated with the achievements in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines and important in STEM education. The purpose of this study is to assess elementary school students' spatial ability and analyze the relationship with mathematical achievement, gender and grade level. This study explored the spatial visualization ability of 1288 elementary school students (grade 4-6) in Seoul and Gangwon province and investigated association between spatial ability and students' mathematics achievement, the students' spatial ability according to their gender and grade level. As a result, this study showed that there were significant correlations between spatial ability and mathematical achievement. And also, boy students were better than girl students in spatial ability and higher grader were better than lower graders in spatial ability. According to these results, spatial ability should be included as one of the important components in identifying students for gifted education programs. Furthermore, more research is needed on how to effectively structure educational opportunities to students both who have high spatial ability and have low spatial ability.

  • Many students have difficulty studying mathematics because of its unique characteristics and the numbers of underachievers in mathematics are increasing, not decreasing, even though great teaching-learning methods have been provided. The purpose of this research is to examine if instruction using mind-map in mathematical studies has positive effects on achievement and attitudes of underachievers in mathematics. For this, mathematics learning ability test before instruction, survey of attitudes toward mathematics before and after instruction and mathematics learning ability test before and after instruction were performed for 32 underachievers in two classes of first grade in C high school in South Chung cheong Province. The positive effects of instruction using mind-map in mathematical studies on academic achievements and attitudes of underachievers were expected, but results indicate that there is no significant effect. However, results indicate that the use of mind-map in mathematics instruction has positive effects partially on the changes of learning attitudes. Therefore, the characteristics of underachievers in mathematics should be understood first, mind-map according to them should be applied and students should have time to properly perceive and draw mind-map skillfully. In teachers' professional knowledge of mind-map and consideration for students, when follow-up researches and systematic instruction proceed together for a long period time, the desired results can be realized.

  • This paper analyzed the relationship between middle school students' belief about understanding with regard to mathematical concepts, procedures, and applications of the procedures. In order to gain our purpose, the academic achievement results of midterm examination of 139 middle school students and the surveys about their beliefs about understanding, mathematical concepts, and mathematical procedures were collected. And the cross analysis and the frequency analysis of SPSS were conducted. The research results showed that students' belief about understanding are irrelevant to their academic achievements. And the percentage of the students who believe that they understand was almost the same with the percentage of the students who understand the procedures. But there were differences between the percentage of the students who believe that they understand and the percentage of the students who understand the concepts. Through these, it is conformed. Students' belief about understanding does not mean they understand mathematical concepts. They just can solve mathematical problems through mechanical procedures.
