This study investigated whether there was a difference between general teaching efficacy and science teaching efficacy of preservice elementary teachers. And, the difference was also examined in the area of several variables of the preservice teachers, such as gender, the university majors, the high school majors, and grades. The results showed that a significant difference was not found between general teaching efficacy and science teaching efficacy. Teacher variables were found as the major factors to explain the difference. In case of male students who are majoring in science/math at university, and the students who majored in science/math at high school, science teaching efficacy was higher than general teaching efficacy. Whereas, in case of female students and nonscience majors at university and high school, science teaching efficacy was lower than their general teaching efficacy. Educational implications for preservice elementary teachers were discussed.
This study explored the heterogeneous latent group on the influence of the learner's perceived math teaching method(instructor-centered, learner-centered) on math self-efficacy. In order to profile the characteristics of the detected latent group, the distribution of variables was confirmed, and multi-group analysis was conducted by SEM. According to the analysis results, two latent groups were detected, and the instructor-type group and the learner-type group were named. As a result of post-hoc analysis, the perception of instructor-centered classes and learner-centered classes, and the perception of math teaching ability were similar between the instructor-type and the learner-type group. But the instructor-type group had higher math self-efficacy, math interest, and math class engagement than the learner-type group. Also, in the instructor-type group, the effect of perception of math teaching ability on math self-efficacy and math class engagement was greater than that of the learner-type group. Whereas, in the learner-type group, the effect of math interest on math self-efficacy and math class engagement was greater than that of the instructor-type group. This study presented a new research method on the influence of math teaching methods on learners by applying the REBUS-PLS method.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of teaching methods among elementary school math teachers in terms of student achievement in examinations. Results are based upon data from two elementary schools. The evaluation criteria of fifteen items was modified from Ryang's original MTEBI sixteen items to measure elementary school teachers' math teaching efficacy. The result of this study could be summarized as follows. The students were divided into two groups according to teaching efficiency: higher teaching efficiency and lower teaching efficiency. A comparison of math tests taken by students from these groups demonstrates a significant statistical difference. Students with teachers in the lower efficiency group are likely to under-perform. In consequence, teachers' self-efficiency in math is considered to affect students' learning achievement in mathematics.
This study examines the effect that mathematics teaching efficacy has on teacher's mathematics education practices. Data was obtained from 220 kindergarten teachers who responded to the questionnaire, the mathematics teaching efficacy belief instrument (developed by Enochs). Among these 220 teachers, upper and lower 5 % of the teachers on mathematics teaching efficacy belief were chosen to identify the influence of mathematics teaching efficacy on mathematics activity style, teaching strategy, and teacher-child interaction. The results indicated that teacher's interest in math, previous participation in mathematics teaching method course mainly influenced mathematics teaching self-efficacy. Teachers with high mathematics teaching efficacy belief preferred providing mathematical learning activity than providing other learning areas. They employed effective mathematics teaching strategy such as high and medium cognitive distancing strategy and established positive teacher-child relationship. Implications for teacher education and professional development activities were discussed.
This study aims to examine the differences in the longitudinal relationship between academic stress, mathematics self-efficacy, and engagement in mathematics class according to the math achievement level. According to the results, academic stress, math self-efficacy, and math class engagement were stable over time for the high and low groups. Also, In the high group, math self-efficacy had a negative longitudinal mediation effect in the influence of academic stress to math class engagement. Whereas, in the low group math class engagement had a positive longitudinal mediation effect in the influence of academic stress to math self-efficacy. This means that the academic stress affects differently according to the math achievement level, and mathematics teachers should reflect these results in their teaching/learning strategies so that students can increase their mathematics self-efficacy along with their engagement in mathematics classes.
Objective: This study was conducted to investigate the effects of early childhood teachers' teaching beliefs, mathematics teaching efficacy, and pedagogical content knowledge of mathematics on their teaching intention of mathematics. Methods: A total of 266 early child teachers in Busan participated in this study. They completed a set of question naires which consisted of questions about teaching beliefs, mathematics teaching efficacy, pedagogical content knowledge of mathematics, and the teaching intention of mathematics. The collected data were analyzed using the SPSS program. Results: First, we observed several positive correlations among the four variables. Second, we found that early childhood teachers' constructive teaching beliefs, mathematics teaching efficacy, and pedagogical content knowledge of mathematics had effects on their teaching intention of mathematics. The knowledge about teaching-learning methods for mathematics among the subcategories of pedagogical content knowledge of mathematics was observed as the strongest predictor for the teachers' teaching intention. Conclusion: We need to take more interest in the pedagogical knowledge about teaching-learning methods of mathematics in teacher training courses in order to enhance teachers' teaching intention of mathematics. As a result, this will makea contribution to high quality math education for young children.
This study configured an integrated math program in which young children can directly participate through storytelling, a teaching technique that has recently earned great popularity. The purpose of the study is to have a positive effect on their mathematical disposition and self-efficacy through the adoption of this program. The program consists of the following five themes: 'understanding of the basic concept of numbers and calculation', 'understanding of the basic concept of space and figure', 'basic measurement', 'understanding of rules' and 'basic data collection and result representation'. The specific activities for each theme planned and executed according to a detailed plan were designed for 20 classes including integrated activities such as story sharing, fine arts and games. The study's participants were 48 five-year old children. The result of the research was that the experimental group's mathematical disposition and self-efficacy score was significantly higher than the control group. The Storytelling-Integrated Math Program was effective in young children's cultivating mathematical disposition and improving self-efficacy. Considering the reality that there has been some confusion and difficulty in carrying out storytelling math and an integrated math program based on the NURI curriculum, it appears that this study could provide a specific and effective teaching-learning program to teachers who want to introduce a program like this.g
This study explores the impact of a STEM integration teacher professional development program focusing on teachers' perception of engineering and their attitudes toward integrating engineering into teaching. A total of sixty-eight teachers from ten schools participated in the program for five days. Data are collected from three main sources including (1) pre and post concept maps probing teachers' perceptions about the engineering discipline, (2) a pre and post survey measuring teachers' self-efficacy of teaching science/mathematics within the engineering context, and (3) engineering integrated science and (or) mathematics lesson plans and teaching reflections. This study utilizes both qualitative and quantitative research methods depending on the data we have collected. The results show that both science and math teachers thought that integrating engineering into teaching provided valuable outcomes, i.e., promoting students' learning about engineering and improving their interest in science or math through real-world problem solving exercises. Participants also felt more comfortable about integrating engineering in their teaching after the program. The results also imply that the teachers' understandings of engineering become more concrete after the program. This study also provides an overview of the challenges and advantages of teaching engineering in K-12 science and mathematics classrooms.

The purpose of this study is to examine middle school teachers' use of technology and problem-based learning (PBL) in their teaching practice. Factors related to teachers' use of technology and PBL are also investigated including: teachers' computer and Internet skills, feelings of preparedness to use the Internet, attitudes toward the use of web resources, pedagogical beliefs, science teaching efficacy, and the use of general teaching strategies. Twenty-seven middle school science, math, and technology teachers participated in the study. Research results describe the participants as slightly proficient in computer and Internet skills, positive toward use of web resources, and neutral on feelings of preparedness toward use of computer and the Internet. Participants also tended toward constructivist pedagogical beliefs and used various teaching strategies. They, however, reported low science teaching efficacy. Teachers' use of computers and the Internet correlated with pedagogical beliefs and feelings of preparedness toward the use of computers and the Internet. The study also found the relationships between the use of PBL and teachers' computer and internet skills, pedagogical beliefs, and the use of general teaching strategies. Also discussed are meaningful implications for teachers' professional development, especially for the programs designed to facilitate the use of web-enhanced PBL.
