A constitutive model on oorthotropic thermo-elasto-viscoplasticity for fiber-reinforced composite materials Is illustrated, and their thermomechanical responses are predicted with the fully-coupled finite element formulation. The unmixing-mixing scheme can be adopted with the multipartite matrix method as the constitutive model. Basic assumptions based upon the composite micromechanics are postulated, and the strain components of thermal expansion due to temperature change are included In the formulation. Also. more than two sets of mechanical variables, which represent the deformation states of multipartite matrix can be introduced arbitrarily. In particular, the unmixing-mixing scheme can be used with any well-known isotropic viscoplastic theory of the matrix material. The scheme unnecessitates the complex processes for developing an orthotropic viscoplastic theory. The governing equations based on fully-coupled thermomechanics are derived with constitutive arrangement by the unmixing-mixing concept. By considering some auxiliary conditions, the Initial-boundary value problem Is completely set up. As a tool of numerical analyses, the finite element method Is used with isoparametric Interpolation fer the displacement and the temperature fields. The equation of mutton and the energy conservation equation are spatially discretized, and then the time marching techniques such as the Newmark method and the Crank-Nicolson technique are applied. To solve the ultimate nonlinear simultaneous equations, a successive iteration algorithm is constructed with subincrementing technique. As a numerical study, a series of analyses are performed with the main focus on the thermomechanical coupling effect in composite materials. The progress of viscoplastic deformation, the stress-strain relation, and the temperature History are careful1y examined when composite laminates are subjected to repeated cyclic loading.

This paper demonstrates numerical techniques for complex large-scale modeling with microplane constitutive theories for reinforced high strength concrete, which for these applications, is defined to be around the 7000 psi (48 MPa) strength as frequently found in protective structural design. Applications involve highly impulsive loads, such as an explosive detonation or impact-penetration event. These capabilities were implemented into the authors' finite element code, ParaAble and the PRONTO 3D code from Sandia National Laboratories. All materials are explicitly modeled with eight-noded hexahedral elements. The concrete is modeled with a microplane constitutive theory, the reinforcing steel is modeled with the Johnson-Cook model, and the high explosive material is modeled with a JWL equation of state and a programmed burn model. Damage evolution, which can be used for erosion of elements and/or for post-analysis examination of damage, is extracted from the microplane predictions and computed by a modified Holmquist-Johnson-Cook approach that relates damage to levels of inelastic strain increment and pressure. Computation is performed with MPI on parallel processors. Several practical analyses demonstrate that large-scale analyses of this type can be reasonably run on large parallel computing systems.

Concrete behaves as ductile material at high temperature. The existing stress-strain relationship is not valid at high temperature condition. Thus, stress-strain curve of concrete at high temperature is re-established by modifying Saenz's suggestion in this study. A constitutive model of concrete subjected to elevated temperature is also suggested. The model consists of three components; free thermal stain, mechanical strain and thermal creep strain. As the temperature increase, the thermal creep becomes more critical to the failure of concrete. The thermal creep strain of concrete is derived from the modified power-law relation for the steady state creep. The proposed equation for thermal creep employs a Dorn's temperature compensated time theorem

In recent years. finite element methods have been used with increasing effectiveness in analysis of displacements and stresses within soil masses. However, one of the weakest links in the analytical representations used in these methods is the models of the material behaviour. Herein is discribed a modification to the finite element methods that allows solution problems with realistic stress-strain relation for soils. A finite element program for the precision prediction of the stress distribution within foundation has been developed using the elasto-plastic Work-Hardening model. The developed program is verified by comparing the results of this study with the tested results for Sacramento river sand. The main results obtained from the numerical examples are as follows: The vertical total stress increments are insensitive to drainage and constitutive equation of materials. The horizontal total stress increments are considerably affected by the drainage and constitutive equation of materials. The maximum shear stresses are affected by the drainage only in elasto-ptastic meterirals. The excess pore water pressures and the volumetric strains not only are considerably affected by the constitutive equation of materials. but also have almost similar distribution.

A new and efficient algorithm for the integration of the thermal-elasto-plastic constitutive equation is proposed. While it falls into the category of the return mapping method, the algorithm adopts the three point approximation of plastic corrector within one time increment step. The results of its application to a von Mises-type thermal-elasto-plastic model with combined hardening and temperature-dependent material properties show that the accurate iso-error maps are obtained for both angular and radial errors. The accuracy achieved is because the predicted stress increment in a single step calculation follows the exact value closely not only at the end of the step but also through the whole path. Also, the comparison of the computational time for the new and other algorithms shows that the new one is very efficient.
This paper is concerned with a test method that can be used to investigate the parameters of the Johnson-Cook constitutive model. These parameters are essential for accurately analyzing material behavior under impact loading conditions in numerical simulation. Ti-6Al-4V alloy (HCP crytal structure) was used as a specimen for the experiments. In the $10^{-3}-10^3/s$ strain rate range, three types of experimental methods (convention, compression and tension) were employed to compare the differences using MTS-810, SHPB and SHTB. Finite element analysis results when applying these parameters were displayed along with the experiment results.

In this article, the constitutive relations of three types of piezoelectric benders, which are a unimorph bender, a bimorph bender and a triple-layer bender, are derived based on the beam theory under the quasi-static equilibrium condition. The relation coefficients are described as the geometry and material properties of the benders. More general constitutive relations involving fixed-free, fixed-roll, and fixed-simply supported boundary conditions under the inconsistent length condition between the piezoelectric layer and the nonpiezoelectric one are discussed. The complicated constitutive relations can be easily calculated and checked by using the symbolic function in ‘Mathematica’. The relation coefficients for the benders are plotted in three dimensional graph using the developed program.

Shape memory alloy (SMA)-textile actuators have attracted significant attention across various fields, including soft robotics and wearable technology. These smooth actuators are developed by combining SMA and simple textile fibers and then knitting them into two loop patterns known as the knit (K-loop) and plain (P-loop) patterns. Both loops are distinguished by opposite bending characteristics owing to loop head geometry. However, the knitting processes for these actuator sheets require expertise and time, resulting in high production costs for knitted loop actuation sheets. This study introduces a novel method by which to assess the strain in SMA textile-based actuators, which experience large deformations when subjected to voltage. Owing to the highly nonlinear constitutive equations of the SMA material, developing an analytical model for numerical analysis is challenging. Therefore, this study employs a novel approach that utilizes a linear constitutive equation to analyze large deformations in SMA material with nonlinear geometry considerations. The user-defined material (UMAT) subroutine integrates the linear constitutive equation into the ABAQUS software suite. This equivalent unit cell (EUC) model is validated by comparing the experimental bending actuation results of K-loops and P-loops.

This paper develops a relatively comprehensive and sophisticated constitutive model of concrete for finite element analysis of concrete structures. The present model accounts for the hydrostatic pressure sensitivity and Lode angle dependence behavior of concrete, not only in its strength criterion, but also in its hardening characteristics. The implementation is carried out through incorporating the developed concrete model in User Subroutine Material(UMAT) of the general-purpose FE program ABAQUS(v.5.8). It is found that the model can sufficiently predict the hardening as well as the softening behaviour of concrete under high confining pressure.
Stainless-clad (SC) bimetallic steels that are manufactured by metallurgically bonding stainless steels as cladding metal and conventional mild steels as substrate metal, are kind of advanced steel plate products. Such advanced composite steels are gaining increasingly widespread usage in a range of engineering structures and have great potential to be used extensively for large civil and building infrastructures. Unfortunately, research work on the SC bimetallic steels from material level to structural design level for the applications in structural engineering field is very limited. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to investigate the material behaviour of the SC bimetallic steels under the cyclic loading which structural steels usually could encounter in seismic scenario. A number of SC bimetallic steel coupon specimens are tested under monotonic and cyclic loadings. The experimental monotonic and cyclic stress-strain curves of the SC bimetallic steels are obtained and analysed. The effects of the clad ratio that is defined as the ratio of the thickness of cladding layer to the total thickness of SC bimetallic steel plate on the monotonic and cyclic behaviour of the SC bimetallic steels are studied. Based on the experimental observations, a cyclic constitutive model with combined hardening criterion is recommended for numerical simulation of the cyclic behaviour of the SC bimetallic steels. The parameters of the constitutive model for the SC bimetallic steels with various clad ratios are calibrated. The research outcome presented in this paper may provide essential reference for further seismic analysis of structures fabricated from the SC bimetallic steels.
