This work involves a method for modeling the flow distribution in the stack of a solid oxide fuel cell. Towards this end, a three dimensional modeling of the flow through a Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) stack was carried out using the CFD analysis. This paper examines the efficacy of using cold flow analysis to describe the flow through a SOFC stack. It brings out the relative importance of temperature effect and the mass transfer effect on the SOFC manifold design. Another feature of this study is to utilize statistical tools to ascertain the extent of uniform flow through a stack. The results showed that the cold flow analysis of flow through SOFC might not lead to correct manifold designs. The results of the numerical calculations also indicated that the mass transfer across membrane was essential to correctly describe the cathode flow, while only temperature effects were sufficient to describe the anode flow in a SOFC.

The relationship between velocity, viscosity, diffusion coefficient, mass transfer coefficient and characteristic length and mass transfer data can be correlated by dimensionless relationship in electrolytic process. The performance of dyestuff removal was decreased as the flow rate of electrolyte was increased. It was due to the effect of retention time decreasing was superior to that of turbulent inlet mixing. Sh/Sc$\^$1/3/ vs Re plot for Al flat electrode did not showed the general tendency of the relationship between Sh/Sc$\^$1/3/ and Re. It can be thought that flow rate was not sufficiently high to increase the effect of mixing.

Experimental mass transfer data, which were obtained for the $CO_2$-water slug flows in vertical tubes with 2, 5, and 8mm diameters, were analyzed in comparison with the penetration theory. It was found that a penetration model with molecular diffusion coefficient cannot predict the experimental data accurately. An effective diffusion coefficient, which considers enhancement effect of interfacial waves, was suggested to improve prediction. Another empirical factor was also suggested to consider the effect of non-uniform interface velocity. A modified penetration model was found to be capable of predicting the experimental data reasonably well.

The effect of tube diameter on heat and mass transfer characteristics of absorber in absorption chiller/heater using LiBr solution as a working fluid has been investigated by both of numerical and experimental study to develop a high performance and compact absorber. The diameter of the heat exchanger tube inside absorber was changed from 15.88mm to 12.70mm and 9.52mm. In numerical study a model of vapor pressure drop inside tube absorber based on a commercial 20RT absorption chiller/heater was performed. The effect of tube diameter, longitudinal pitch, vapor Reynolds number, longitudinal pitch to diameter ratio on vapor pressure drop across the heat exchanger tube banks inside absorber have been investigated and found that vapor pressure drop decreases as tube diameter increases, longitudinal pitch increases, vapor Reynolds number decreases and longitudinal pitch to diameter ratio increases. In experimental study, a system includes a tube absorber, a generator, solution distribution system and cooling water system was set up. The experimental results shown that the overall heat transfer coefficient, mass transfer coefficient. Nusselt number and Sherwood number increase as solution flow rate increases. In both of study cases, the heat and mass transfer performance increases as tube diameter decreases. Among three different tube diameters the smallest tube diameter 9.52mm has highest heat and mass transfer performance.

Experiments on the condensation heat transfer and pressure drop in the brazed type plate heat exchangers are performed with refrigerants R410A/R22. To investigate the geometric effect, plate heat exchangers with the same pitch and height but different $45^{\circ},\;35^{\circ}and\;20^{\circ}$ chevron angles are used. Varying the mass flux of refrigerant (13~34 kg/$m^2$), the condensing temperatures ($20^{\circ}C\;and\;30^{\circ}C$) and the vapor quality (from 0.9 to 0.15) at the same constant heat flux ($5kW/m^2$), the condensation heat transfer coefficients and pressure drops are measured. The heat transfer coefficients decrease slightly with increasing the condensing temperature at a given mass flux in all plate heat exchangers. The pressure drop increases with increasing the mass flux and the quality and decreasing the condensing temperature and the chevron angle.
To clarify the hydraulic and thermal characteristics of ice slurry which made from 6.5% ethylene glycol-water solution flow in the double tube and plate type heat exchanger, experimental studies were performed. The mass flux and Ice fraction of ice slurry were varied from 800 to $3,500 kg/m^2s$(or 7 to 17 kg/min) and from 0 to 25%, respectively. During the experiment, it was found that the measured pressure drop and heat transfer rate increase with the mass flux and ice fraction; however the effect of ice fraction appears not to be significant at high mass flux region. At the region of low mass flux, a sharp increase in the pressure drop and heat transfer rate were observed depends on mass flux.

The present study investigated the effects of channel rotation and bleed flow on heat/mass transfer in a $90^{\circ}$ ribbed square channel. The bleed holes were located between the rib turbulators on the leading surface and those on the trailing surface case by case. The tests were conducted under the conditions of various bleeding ratios (0.0, 0.2, 0.4) and rotation numbers (0.0, 0.2, 0.4) at Re=10,000. The results suggested that heat/mass transfer characteristics were influenced by the Coriolis force, bleed flow and bleed hole location. The heat/mass transfer on the surface with bleed flow was more increased than that without bleed flow but that on the opposition surface was decreased. Those were due to the effects of the tripping flow and the diminution of main flow rate respectively. The results also showed that the heat/mass transfer characteristics were different according to bleed hole location and channel rotation.

In the present study, the improvement of absorption characteristics on combined heat and mass transfer process in a falling film of a vertical absorber by change of geometric parameters were studied experimentally and analytically. The energy and diffusion equations are solved simultaneously to give the temperature and concentration variations at the liquid solution-refrigerant vapor interface and at the wall. Absorption behaviors of heat and mass transfer were analyzed through falling film of the LiBr aqueous solution contacted by refrigerant vapor in the absorber. Effects of film Reynolds number, geometric parameters by insert device (spring) and flow pattern on heat and mass transfer performances have been also investigated. Especially, effects of the flow pattern by geometric parameters have been considered to observe the total heat and mass transfer rates through falling film along the absorber. As a numerical and experimental result, maximum absorption rate was shown at the wave-flow by insert device (spring). The error ranges between experiment and analysis were from 5.8 to 12% at Re$_{f}$ > 100.0.

Boiling heat transfer coefficients and pressure drops for R-22 and R-407C were measured in horizontal micro-channels. The test section is stainless steel tube, inner tube diameters are 1.8mm and 2.8mm, and the respective lengths are 1500mm and 3000mm. The range of mass flux is 300-600kg/$m^2$s and heat flux is 5-15kW/$m^2$. In this results, pressure drop increased linearly for both R-22 and R-407C with increased mass flux, but the increase of heat flux did not affect the pressure. In addition, the pressure drop was fairly increased in the high quality region rather than low quality region. In the range of low quality, the mass flux had a small affect on the heat transfer coefficients, however, in high quality region, the heat transfer coefficients increased even more with increasing mass flux. Under the low quality region and low mass flux, the heat transfer coefficients increased with increasing heat flux densities. The effects of inner tube diameter were clearly observed. Namely, the measured pressure drop inside inner tube diameter 1.8 mm is higher than 2.8 mm with increasing the mass flux and heat flux. Also, the measured local heat transfer coefficient inside inner tube diameter 1.8 mm is higher than 2.8 mm in the range of high qualities. The experimental data for R-407C compared with proposed correlation using pure refrigerant. The experimental data for R-407C was more decreased than the proposed correlation for pure refrigerant up to 50% or more.
The load distribution and deformation of rock-socketed drilled shafts subjected to axial loads are evaluated by a load-transfer method. The emphasis is on quantifying the effect of coupled soil resistance in rock-socketed drilled shafts using the 2D elasto-plastic finite element analysis. Slippage and shear load transfer behavior at the pile-soil interface are investigated by using a user-subroutine interface model (FRlC). It is shown that the coupled soil resistance provides the influence of pile toe settlement as the shaft resistance is increased to an ultimate limit state. The results show that the coupling effect is closely related to the value of pile diameter over rock mass modulus (D/$E_{mass}$) and the ratio of total shaft resistance against total applied load ($R_s$/Q). Through comparisons with field case studies, the 2D numerical analysis reseanably presented load transfer of pile and coupling effect due to the transfer of shaft shear loading, and thus represents a significant improvement in the prediction of load deflections of drilled shafts.
