Strategy of Vitalization for Female Maritime Officers

  • Women represent only 1 and 2 percent of the 1.25million maritime officers in the world. Despite the slight increase of female maritime officers, there are few studies concerning them indicating that there has been insufficient progress especially on merchant ships. This study refers to the data from carried out 173 female students in Korea Maritime University and suggests the strategy of vitalization for female maritime officers using AHP and SWOT analysis.

An Analysis of the Decision Factors on Mokpo Port by Multinomial Logit Model

  • Relative importance of maritime transport that takes charge of main current of freight in country' economy is very large. Especially, port and facility carry out important role which treats freight of import and export smoothly and improves international trade as turning point, to achieve key role on connection and association between sea and land. For such reason, enlargement of port facilities or development of port needs to grasp exactly the utilization of port, attributes and selective factors of shipper. On the other hand, the amounts of physical distribution on Mokpo port located in Korean west coast are increasing, with fast economic growth of East Asian including China. This study uses discrete choice model that is measuring to analyze attribute and characteristic of Mokpo port, and analyzes port selection by decision factors of shipper. This paper composed a questionnaire using the result of preceding research, to decide port selection factor among competitive ports. Through factor analysis on a basis of the questionnaire' result, five principal components were extracted. These are resorted out by Logit model, to grasp competitive elements of port. This research fin present direction which raises competitive power of ports in west coast of Korea, especially on alternative and concentration of middle-class port as Mokpo may be useful.

  • Port development has been remarkably increasing due to the progress of industrialization in ASEAN area. Especially, Vietnam has increased the international physical distribution in this area rapidly. The main issues facing decision makers at container terminals in Vietnam are how to expand the existing container terminals and construct new container terminals. In this paper, we performed the basic design based on simulation analysis in order to support the expansion of Quy Nhon port in Vietnam as a case study. The preliminary capacity analysis was conducted on the one berth at the port to analyze the scale of C/C(Container Crane)and yard area. Alternative scenarios were created based on the preliminary capacity analysis and the detailed simulation analysis was conducted for supporting the scenarios.

  • The number of women seafarers around the world is 2%, and about 30% of women in the shipping industry. International organizations are making efforts in various ways to advance women in the maritime industry. This study provides recent information about the International Maritime Organization(IMO)'s new programme as IMO focuses on women in maritime during 2019, under the World Maritime Day theme "Empowering Women in the Maritime Community".

  • East Asia has played an important role in the economic and social development in the Asian pacific region and in the global arena. In the region the impact of companies centralizing their logistics activities around a few distribution centers has already led some leading ports such as Singapore, Hong Kong to transform and expand their functions and business activities to provide port users with value added logistics services. Other ports in the region also have an important part to play in the total logistics Chain. In these environments, the maritime activities of Jang BoGo, who was the maritime king of the commercial maritime empire in East Asia in the 9th century, give many implications to the international logistics network strategy that Korea has to take in order to become a power of International Logistics. Though the trading and economic environments at that time may be quite different from today, the super-national maritime management pattern that Jang Bo-go, founder of the Northeast Asian maritime trading kingdom devised, gives us many implications in the global trading and economic environments, in the respects of overseas direct investment and international logistics. Accordingly, the paper aims to examine the establishment of hub port in Northeast Asia, modelled after the maritime network management strategy of Jang BoGo.

As Sea may appear as a image of longing and challenge for the unknown world, Port is understood as a link which connect Sea and Land. Sea, Island and Port are the basis of human lifes, economic working areas and communication spaces with nature. Sea and Port have been changed in accordance with human History as the space of Life, Work, Play and Imagination. The Maritime activities has been developed as the type of a Culture, including various diversities according to the time and space. This Paper suggested a definition of Maritime Culture and Theoretical review and groped introduction and strategies and countermeasures for expansion of systematic Maritime Culture. Maritime Culture not only enhance the quality of Citizen life but also contribute the progress of National economy increasing the quality of Culture, Turism and Environment and the expectation of it has been enlarged. It is needed to introduce and expand Maritime Culture systematically through theoretical framework suggested by this paper, and additional research may be necessary for the detailed solutions and countermeasures.

  • Vietnam is entering an important phase of urbanization that corresponds to the current economic development. Developing logistics of Vietnam in general, and Haiphong particularly, is urgent in order to meet the need for the economic development of Viet Nam in this period of international integration. Hai Phong's development record over the past 20 years is remarkable. In conjunction with the local government's efforts, external factors, such as increasing direct foreign investment, is turning Hai Phong into Vietnam's logistics hub. However, even though Hai Phong accounted for 98% of North Vietnam's throughput, its logistics services are low level, the ports are fragmented, and the port management scale is backward, with the legal system overlapping. This paper has systematically evaluated the development of Haiphong city during recent years, then offers some solutions to develop logistics for Hai Phong ports.

  • Today the role of Vessel Traffic Service(VTS) is increasing due to the function to preserve the safety of marine traffic and harbour, improve the efficiency of harbour, protect the marine environment. However, Vessel Traffic Service(VTS) lacks the international and domestic legal basis. For this reason it is hard to fulfill the positive and systemic operation of Vessel Traffic Service(VTS). It is essential to establish a domestic legal basis upon which to perform function and role of Vessel Traffic Service(VTS) fully. The purpose of this study is to propose the directing point for the adequate regulation of vessels to participate in Vessel Traffic Service(VTS) by doing a comparative analysis between domestic regulations and other countries's regulations.
