Ransomware such as WannaCry is a global issue and methods to defend against malware attacks are important. We have to be able to classify the malware types efficiently in order to minimize the damage from malwares. This study makes models to classify malware properly with various statistical techniques. Several classification techniques such as logistic regression, random forest, gradient boosting, and support vector machine are used to construct models. This study also helps us understand key variables to classify the type of malicious software.

Android malware steals users' private information, and embedded unsafe advertisement (ad) libraries, which execute unsafe code causing damage to users. The majority of such traffic is HTTP and is mixed with other normal traffic, which makes the detection of malware and unsafe ad libraries a challenging problem. To address this problem, this work describes a novel HTTP traffic flow mining approach to detect and categorize Android malware and unsafe ad library. This work designed AndroCollector, which can automatically execute the Android application (app) and collect the network traffic traces. From these traces, this work extracts HTTP traffic features along three important dimensions: quantitative, timing, and semantic and use these features for characterizing malware and unsafe ad libraries. Based on these HTTP traffic features, this work describes a supervised classification scheme for detecting malware and unsafe ad libraries. In addition, to help network operators, this work describes a fine-grained categorization method by generating fingerprints from HTTP request methods for each malware family and unsafe ad libraries. This work evaluated the scheme using HTTP traffic traces collected from 10778 Android apps. The experimental results show that the scheme can detect malware with 97% accuracy and unsafe ad libraries with 95% accuracy when tested on the popular third-party Android markets.

In recent times cyber attackers can use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to boost the sophistication and scope of attacks. On the defense side, AI is used to enhance defense plans, to boost the robustness, flexibility, and efficiency of defense systems, which means adapting to environmental changes to reduce impacts. With increased developments in the field of information and communication technologies, various exploits occur as a danger sign to cyber security and these exploitations are changing rapidly. Cyber criminals use new, sophisticated tactics to boost their attack speed and size. Consequently, there is a need for more flexible, adaptable and strong cyber defense systems that can identify a wide range of threats in real-time. In recent years, the adoption of AI approaches has increased and maintained a vital role in the detection and prevention of cyber threats. In this paper, an Ensemble Deep Restricted Boltzmann Machine (EDRBM) is developed for the classification of cybersecurity threats in case of a large-scale network environment. The EDRBM acts as a classification model that enables the classification of malicious flowsets from the largescale network. The simulation is conducted to test the efficacy of the proposed EDRBM under various malware attacks. The simulation results show that the proposed method achieves higher classification rate in classifying the malware in the flowsets i.e., malicious flowsets than other methods.

Advances in detection techniques, such as mutation and obfuscation, are being advanced with the development of malware technology. In the malware detection technology, unknown malware detection technology is important, and a method for Malware Authorship Attribution that detects an unknown malicious code by identifying the author through distributed malware is being studied. In this paper, we try to extract the compiler information affecting the binary-based author identification method and to investigate the sensitivity of feature selection, probability and non-probability models, and optimization to classification efficiency between studies. In the experiment, the feature selection method through information gain and the support vector machine, which is a non-probability model, showed high efficiency. Among the optimization studies, high classification accuracy was obtained through feature selection and model optimization through the proposed framework, and resulted in 48% feature reduction and 53 faster execution speed. Through this study, we can confirm the sensitivity of feature selection, model, and optimization methods to classification efficiency.

While malwares must be accurately identifiable from arbitrary programs, existing studies using classification techniques have limitations that they can only be applied to limited samples. In this work, we propose a method to utilize API call frequency to detect and classify malware families from arbitrary programs. Our proposed method defines a rule that checks whether the call frequency of a particular API exceeds the threshold, and identifies a specific family by utilizing the rate information on the corresponding rules. In this paper, decision tree algorithm is applied to define the optimal threshold that can accurately identify a particular family from the training set. The performance measurements using 4,443 samples showed 85.1% precision and 91.3% recall rate for family detection, 97.7% precision and 98.1% reproduction rate for classification, which confirms that our method works to distinguish malware families effectively.
Malware variations could be defined as malicious executable files that have similar functions but different structures. In order to classify the variations, this paper analyzed sequence alignment, the method used in Bioinformatics. This method found common parts of the Malwares' API call information. This method's performance is dependent on the API call information's length; if the length is too long, the performance should be very poor. Therefore we removed the repeated patterns in API call information in order to improve the performance of sequence alignment analysis, before the method was applied. Finally the similarity between malware was analyzed using sequence alignment. The experimental results with the real malware samples were presented.

This paper proposes an Image Texture Median Filter (ITMF) to analyze and detect Android malware on Drebin datasets. We design a model of "ITMF" combined with Image Processing of Median Filter (MF) to reflect the similarity of the malware binary file block. At the same time, using the MAEVS (Malware Activity Embedding in Vector Space) to reflect the potential dynamic activity of malware. In order to ensure the improvement of the classification accuracy, the above-mentioned features(ITMF feature and MAEVS feature)are studied to train Restricted Boltzmann Machine (RBM) and Back Propagation (BP). The experimental results show that the model has an average accuracy rate of 95.43% with few false alarms. to Android malicious code, which is significantly higher than 95.2% of without ITMF, 93.8% of shallow machine learning model SVM, 94.8% of KNN, 94.6% of ANN.

The rapid growth of internet users and faster network speed are driving the new ICT services. ICT Technology has improved our way of thinking and style of life, but it has created security problems such as malware, ransomware, and so on. Therefore, we should research against the increase of malware and the emergence of malicious code. For this, it is necessary to accurately and quickly detect and classify malware family. In this paper, we analyzed and classified visualization technology, which is a preprocessing technology used for deep learning-based malware classification. The first method is to convert each byte into one pixel of the image to produce a grayscale image. The second method is to convert 2bytes of the binary to create a pair of coordinates. The third method is the method using LSH. We proposed improving the technique of using the entire existing malicious code file for visualization, extracting only the areas where important information is expected to exist and then visualizing it. As a result of experimenting in the method we proposed, it shows that selecting and visualizing important information and then classifying it, rather than containing all the information in malicious code, can produce better learning results.

According to the national information security white paper 2013, the number of hacking attempt in 2012 is 17,570 which is increased by 67.4% than in 2011, and it has been increasing year after year. The cause of this increase is considered as pursuit of monetary profit and diversification techniques of infection. However, because the development of malicious code faster than the increase in the number of experts to analyze and respond the malware, it is difficult to respond to security threats due to malicious code. So, the interest on automatic analysis tools is increasing. In this paper, we proposed the method of malware classification by similarity using malware DNA. It helps the experts to reduce the analysis time, to increase the correctness. The proposed method generates 'Malware DNA' from extracted features, and then calculates similarity to classify the malwares.

Recent development in information and communication technology has been beneficial to many, but at the same time, malicious attack attempts are also increasing through vulnerabilities in new programs. Among malicious attacks, malware operate in various ways and is distributed to people in new ways every time, and to solve this malware, it is necessary to quickly analyze and provide defense techniques. If new malware can be classified into the same type of malware, malware has similar behavioral characteristics, so they can provide defense techniques for new malware using analyzed malware. Therefore, there is a need for a solution to this because the method of accurately and quickly classifying malware and the number of data may not be uniform for each family of analyzed malware. This paper proposes a system that combines image preprocessing and ensemble techniques to increase accuracy in imbalanced data.
