  • Purpose: This research was conducted to identify major factors that influence competency for nursing students in basic nursing skills. Method: Data were collected by questionnaires from 290 first year students in one college of nursing. The instrument tools included motivation for admission to nursing, concern about fundamentals of nursing, perceived importance of fundamentals of nursing, level of active participation in fundamentals of nursing, number of times to use open Lab, Lab class satisfaction, self-efficacy, self-evaluation and student attitude. Results: There was no significant correlation between competency in basic nursing skills and motivation for admission to nursing, concern about fundamentals of nursing, perceived importance of fundamentals of nursing, or number of times to use open Lab. Competency in basic nursing skill in these students showed a significantly positive correlation to Lab class satisfaction, self-efficacy, self-evaluation, student attitude and level of active participation in fundamentals of nursing. The major factors that influenced competency in basic nursing skills for nursing students were student attitude, self-efficacy and number of times to use open Lab. These factors explained 15.5% of the variance in competency. Conclusion: Basic nursing skill practice education programs should be developed to improve self-efficacy and active participation.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the relationship of clinical competency and self-directed learning in nursing students. Method: This study was conducted at two nursing colleges with students in a 2 year undergraduate nursing program. Data were collected from 182 students by means of self reporting questionnaires from October 1 to October 8, 2004. The data were analyzed by SPSS 10.0 PC programs using descriptive statistics, one-way ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficient. Result: The questionnaire of students' clinical competency consisted of nineteen items based on a five point summated rating scale and was categorized into six subscales by factor analysis. The six subscales are nursing process, major nursing intervention, education for clients, observation and physical examination, and fundamental nursing. The more adaptable to major, the higher clinical competency (F= 3.406, p= .035) and self-directed learning (F= 7.444, p= .001). There was a positive correlation between students' clinical competency and self-directed learning (r= .367, p= .001). Conclusion: we concluded that future research should explore strategies for the development of self-directed learning to improve clinical competency of nursing students.

  • This study was attempted to identify the difference between nursing competencies and major satisfaction before and after the first clinical practice of nursing college students and use it as basic data for efficient clinical practice education. Data collection by single group pre- and post-design was conducted from February 18 to April 23, 2019 for 201 nursing college students before and after clinical practice for 8 weeks. The collected data were analyzed by frequency, paried t-test, and Pearson's Correlation, Multiple Regression using SPSS/Win 23.0. As a result of the study, Nursing competency increased after the first clinical practice than before, but it was not significant(t=-1.73, p=.084). Among the sub-factors of nursing competency, educational ability(t=-1.97, p=.050) and ethical practical ability(t=-209, p=.038) was found to increase significantly. Major satisfaction was significantly increased after clinical practice than before(t=-2.45, p=.015). After clinical practice, it was found that general satisfaction, relationship satisfaction, and recognition satisfaction which are sub-factors of major satisfaction, had a positive correlation with nursing competency. As a result of analyzing the impact on nursing competency, it was found that recognition satisfaction explains nursing competency as 9.9%. Therefore, it is necessary to reorganize the clinical practice curriculum that can improve nursing competency, develop a program that can improve major satisfaction, and verify the effectiveness.

Methods: The participants were college students studying in health care related major at a four-year university in D-city who agreed to participate in this study. Some of their data were intentionally excluded as their answers were incomplete or missing and finally 272 surveys were analyzed. Results: It was found that they have high level of general life competencies of which the subcategories are communication, problem-solving, and self-directed learning competency. GPA and TOEIC score which are the indicators of academic and English achievement were found to be correlated with the level of three competencies. Self-directed learning competency is assumed to be main cause variable of these achievement. Conclusion: As those students who have higher academic and English achievement also show high level of communication, problem-solving and self-directed learning competency. • This study is for figuring out major components of construction quality infrastructure and suggesting improvement plan by benchmarking global best practice model and analyzing gap between the model and sample practice. Based on improvement plan, researcher could derive major characters and components of construction quality infrastructure, and also about the priority among core competency components of construction quality experts. The result showed that the 'human resource' was ranked the best priority followed by 'method' 'environment', 'equipment' among major characters and components of construction quality infrastructure. Also, for core competency components of construction quality experts, 'number of years in work places' was the best priority, and the 'professional knowledge on engineering' was another priority ranked. Far from general perception on competency components, 'academic education' ranked the last. It may allude that the current education system in this country is not effective in developing competency of quality engineers. In summary, this study shows professionalism of quality engineer is the most important thing in all the components.

  • New occupational qualification system built on NCS(National Competency Standard) aimed to induce industries, the final appliers of qualification, to play a leading role in designing qualification and to spontaneously apply such qualification standard to employment and promotion so as to reinforce universality of qualification. In this study, we verified the validity of NCS level of qualification categories for 130 occupational fields by redesigning NCS-based new occupational qualification system with a focus on 7 major areas, including mechanical field, which were found to have wide-ranging social ripple effect throughout society and high acceptability in 2014. The results of study on suitability at qualification level suggested the followings: First, there is a difference in number of competency units for each qualification category, depending on area. New qualification covering 7 major areas included 15.3 competency units for each qualification category, which exceeds the number of competency units(about 10 units) in subdivided NCS. By field, some difference was found with 7.9 competency units for cultural field and 22.6 competency units for information and communication area. Second, preference above normal level was observed in the criteria, procedure and method for determining qualification redesigning. However, preference below normal level was exhibited in connection with possibility of linkage with overseas qualifications, although preference was above normal level in relation to the suitability of design/qualification level and qualification categories based on lifelong career development path within scope of NCS as the criteria for determining the redesign of qualification categories. Second, we compared NCS level and SC(Sector Council level, and the results showed that NCS level was found to be somewhat well-defined. For the qualifications with different definitions, it was deemed difficult to determine superiority between NCS level and SC level. However, majority opinion indicated that it would be desirable to follow NCS level because NCS was created through collection of opinions for a prolonged period.
