  • Heights of a platform above the rail for the passenger train in the country are classified into two categories such as the low level (500mm; mainline) and the high level (1,135mm; metropolitan subway line) platforms. In order to operate similarly both a mainline railroad and a metropolitan subway line, as the requisite door safety system, it is necessary to develop the doorstep equipment of the rolling stock regardless of both the low and high level platforms. In this study, performance requirements of doorstep equipments used for two types of platforms are examined on the supposition that the train only for the low level platform could stop in the both low and high level platforms.

  • In order to operate trains both mainline railroad platform and metropolitan subway line platform, it is necessary to develop the door step equipment of the rolling stock regardless of low(500mm, mainline) and high level platforms(1,135mm, metropolitan subway line) because of the requisite door safety system. In this study, TMS-DCU interface is studied for low and high level railway platforms. As a result, Design circuit of TMS(Train Management System)-DCU(Door Control Unit) interface is suitable for telescopic sliding type doorstep unit to minimize damage to the carbody underframe of railway vehicles.

  • Crashes that occur at tollgates have different characteristics compared to those of the mainline on expressways in terms of crash cause, crash type, and vehicle type. Due to this fact, the safety performance function (SPF) focused on the expressway tollgates, apart from the mainline, should be developed. The aim of this study is, therefore, to identify the influential factors and develope a SPF for crashes at tollgates. Firstly, we established independent variables affecting crashes at tollgates through literature review and descriptive statistical analysis. Based on these variables, two negative binomial regression models with different form of independent variables were developed and goodness-of-fits of each model were compared. According to the results, the number of crashes increases i) as AADT, Hi-pass rate, and heavy vehicle rate increase, ii) as average lane width decreases, iii) on the mainline tollgate type. The safety performance function developed in this study could be applied to select hot-spots for expressway tollgates.

  • A longline is made of many snoods with baited hooks which are connected to mainline at constant intervals. Hauling the mainline, removing the unused baits and the hooked fish, and the arrangement of hooks are dependent on mainly manual labour as compared with mechanized other fishing gear in fishing operation. The mechanization for longline operation is needed in order to eliminate the manual handling and to shorten the labour time. The magnetic hook splitting apparatus which consists of the hook separator and the guide leading to storage magazine rail was devised for the mechanization of hauling operation. The experiments were carried out in order to measure the splitting rate of hooks in accordance with the hauling speed of mainline and magnetic flux density of splitting apparatus from February to November, 1985. The splitting rate was $94\%$ for the Alaska pollack (Theragra chalcogramma) hook and $96\%$ for the halibut (Paralichthys olivaceus) hook at the hauling speed 24 m/min and magnetic flux density 482 gauss. The unsplitting of hooks was caused by entangling snood in the mainline and low magnetic flux density. The rate is greater the faster hauling speed and the lower magnetic flux density, with an average of about $6\%$, The magnetic flux density needed to hook splitting becomes increased with the increasing hauling speed. When the practical hauling speed is from 20 to 35m/min, the magnetic flux density is needed from 400 to 850 gauss.

On closer examination, it seems that the conceptual design is suitable for telescopic sliding type doorstep equipment to minimize damage to the carbody underframe of railway vehicles and can also minimize the variation of the distance between the railway platform. Furthermore, the operation process and control flowchart of doorstep equipments by stages are proposed by various performance requirements.

  • Studies suggested an increase in the competitiveness and roles of mainline railways like speed and accessibility improvement, as a fundamental direction of the National Transport Network Plan. At this point, topics presented especially for strengthening the role of human and environment centered transportation: as to the greatly improved speed competitiveness, there are an operational speed above 180km/h ~ 200km/h and traveling within 2 ~ 3 hours among big cities. As to accessibility improvement, there are accessibility to main railway stations within 30 minutes, and the improvement of accessibility, safety, eco-friendliness, amenity etc. As a part of these suggestions, field specific plans were proposed for the establishment of expressed mainline railway network in Korea such as train's, civil structures, trolley lines etc. In this paper we analyzed the conventional lines and systems to figure out whether to change details in terms of H/W of signaling system. Additionally, we reviewed the compatibility or difference of signalling system depending on train's speed. With this result, we deduced the number of virtual blocks specific to the speed of 180km/h, 200km/h and 230km/h, which were showed for the speed improvement considering each variable like blocks, braking distance etc. In this way, we suggested the railway signal system establishment plan considering safety operation.

  • This paper aims to suggest the strategies for Korea port, especially Busan to develope into a viable transhipment center and/or Hub port as the articulation points between mainline and feeder nets. To tackle this goal, the authors clarify the requirements for Korea port which will be critical in determining its position as Hub through the careful analysis on competitiveness, environmental impact, port policy and capacity, transhipment traffic and inherent ablity to generate traffic. The results are summerized as follows. (1) Coping with increasing container volumes, new investment is sustainedly necessary to increase the capacity and inherent ability of container port and create economies of scale. Moreover, increasing port capacity will increase the potential for the Korea port's inclusion into mainline rather than feeder networks. (2) Considering an increasing awareness of need for customer-oriented option s and service quality rather than simply a reliance on infrastructure-led efficiency, privatization of one sort or another and corporation of port have been key strategies in achieving greater efficiency in Korea containerport.

  • In the current train operation system, large scaled stations like Cheongnyangni and Yongsan are not remote controlled from the central operator but manually by local operator. It is because there are so many entering and exit of trains between depot and mainline which are operating through the large scaled stations and it is very effective to traffic flow on the mainline. Therefore, Kyong Bong Technology Co., Ltd. (KBTech) and Korea Railway Research Institute (KRRI) are continuing the research and development to import 'Autonomous Decentralized System (ADS)'as part of a new train operation control system which is a national policy project of MOCT (Ministry Of Construction & Transportation). The concept of the 'Autonomous Decentralized System (ADS)' has born in 1970's in Japan by the influences of molecular biology. The special features of ADS are being a system that able to do the online expansion, online maintenance and fault tolerance. This thesis introduces the concept of technology of ADS and also describes the system designing & development to apply with large scaled stations.
