  • This paper examines the main factors affecting the bank performance under the Basel II implementation in Vietnam, a transitional economy in Asia. We pay special attention to the implementation duration of the Basel II convention and how it affects profitability. Thereby, we can evaluate the effectiveness of Basel II in the whole system according to the roadmap to 2020. We employ the panel data regression method to analyze a sample of 300 bank-year observations from 25 commercial banks during the 2008-2019 period. Our empirical findings show that the size of the bank, net interest margin, state ownership, and Basel II convention have positive effects on bank profitability. However, our empirical findings indicate that bank age and branch number negatively reduce bank performance. Finally, our results indicate that commercial banks earn extra profit from delaying the implementation of Basel II. However, commercial banks will encounter higher credit, and operational risks arising from delaying the implementation of Basel II standards. Therefore, our study contributes to the insights into the bank's management to enhance profitability, especially after implementing Basel II in a transitional economy. Finally, our study also provides policy implications for bank managers and banking supervisory to maintain the sustainable development of the banking system.

  • The main objectives of this comparative study were 1) to compare the floristic similarity of species composition between the extant vegetation and seedlings from soil seed bank and 2) to quantify the potential contribution of soil seed bank to revegetation of forest in a constructed area, which is called "ecological impact mitigation" in conjunction with the power plant extension. Forest topsoil of seven plots was collected from the surface soil after measurements were taken on the ground vegetation in each plot. A greenhouse experiment was conducted and monitored to analyze the germination potential of soil seed bank. The forest topsoil was spread on plastic trays ($0.7m^2{\times}7$) filled with a 5cm layer of sterilized potting mix. The results of monitoring for 2 years in a greenhouse were as follows : 1) seedlings of soil seed bank per 4.9$m^2$ were 1,269 with 36 species (1st year) and 2,615 with 25 species (2nd year). 2) 38${\pm}$8% of the flora species were germinated from soil seed bank. It can be concluded that the use of soil seed bank would be effective to promote establishment of diverse species and vegetation. However, it behooves to continue monitoring on succession of vegetation and pursue revegetation with other methods for ecological restoration. Finally, adequate topsoil deposit and gathering methods should be studied properly.

  • Ginseng (Panax ginseng) is frequently used in Asian countries as a traditional medicine. The major components of ginseng are ginsenosides. Among these, ginsenoside compound K has been reported to prevent the formation of malignancy and metastasis of cancer by blocking the formation of tumor and suppressing the invasion of cancer cells. In this study, ginsenoside $Rb_1$ was converted into compound K, via secreted ${\beta}$-glucosidase enzyme from the Leuconostoc lactis DC201 isolated, which was extracted from Kimchi. The strain DC201 was suspended and cultured in MRS broth at $37^{\circ}C$. Subsequently, the residue from the cultured broth supernatant was precipitated with EtOH and then dissolved in 20 mM sodium phosphate buffer (pH 6.0) to obtain an enzyme liquid. Meanwhile, the crude enzyme solution was mixed with ginsenoside $Rb_1$ at a ratio of 1:4 (v/v).The reaction was carried out at $30^{\circ}C$ and 190 rpm for 72 hours, and then analyzed by TLC and HPLC. The result showed that ginsenoside Rb1 was transformed into compound K after 72 hours post reaction.

  • The research mainstream has focused on improving the competitiveness throughout the reinforcement of customer satisfaction and loyalty in the banking industry, but there is still a lack of research that reflects characteristics of banking services. From a customer point of view, this study considers a variety of bank characteristics such as levels of interest rate, numbers of transaction banks, monthly average balance, and age. In line with this observation, the main objective of the current research is to investigate the relationship between bank characteristics and ongoing transaction intentions with a particular bank using a categorial regression analysis and in turn, provide insights for managers. First, the findings show that deposit interest rate is insignificant for leading customers to ongoing transaction intentions, but loan interest rate is significant when customers are satisfied with a loan interest rate. Second, if customers only transact their banking services with a particular bank, they are more likely to deal with the bank, rather than customers who transact additional one or two banks. Third, in the case of monthly average balance, customers who have more than \100 million wons per month are likely to switch other competitors. Finally, old customers are more stable than young customers when they consider to switch the relationship with a bank. The author provides insights for bank managers and discusses research limitations and further directions of the study.

  • Since depositors are motivated by returns, it is important for Islamic banks management to understand the extent that rates of return on deposits influence their customers' decision to deposit. The main objective of the study is to explore the degree of influence of conventional bank's interest rate on Islamic bank's profitability and vice-versa. It has been seen from 2005 to 2011 that the rate of interest declared on deposit by conventional banks has a negative impact on profitability of both types of banks in Bangladesh. Rate of profit declared on deposit by Islamic banks is positively related with their profit earned but negatively related with profit earned by conventional banks. We see that rate of interest declared on deposit by Conventional Banks is positively related with their deposit volume but negatively related with Islamic Bank's deposit. On the other hand, rate of profit declared on deposit by Islamic Banks is negatively related with deposit levels of both types of banks. The survey result shows that almost 85% of the respondents are choosing Islamic banks only from their religious point of view and more than 60% of the sampled Islamic bank customers are reluctant to leave the bank even if conventional banks offer better interest rates.

  • In this research, water qualities of river water and bank-filtrate were compared for six months including winter season. The location studied was Galjon area, the downstream of the Nakdong river. The well for bank-filtrate was installed 40 m apart from riverside. Main analytic results of bank-filtrate and river water were summarized as followings; the average concentrations in bank-filtrate were turbidity 0.8NTU, TN 0.4mg/l, $BOD_5$, 0.1mg/l, $KMnO_4$ consumption 1.6mg/l, heterotrophic bacteria 350cfu/ml, Fe 0.5mg/l, Mn 0.99mg/l while the average concentrations in river water were turbidity 6.1NTU, TN 3.9mg/l, $BOD_5$, 3.6mg/l, $KMnO_4$ consumption 11mg/l, heterotrophic bacteria 1,640cfu/ml, Fe 0.28mg/l, Mn 0.04mg/l. Water quality of bank-filtrate was mostly shown a good results than it of river water excepting Fe and Mn. In even basic constituents such as water temperature and pH, bank-filtrate was very settled while river water was extraordinary changable and high. In case of nitrogen, especially, total nitrogen of river water was 3.9mg/l while it of bank-filtrate was 0.4mg/l and its reduction was very high. The reason is that $NH^+_4-N$ among total nitrogen in the river water is nitrified and then denitrified in soil layer when it is pumped up as bank-filtrate. But Fe and Mn caused by the characteristics of soil was very high in bank-filtrate while Mn in river water was particularly very low and settled. As the distance between riverside and well was longer, concentration of Fe and Mn may be went up while its bacteria may be reduced.

  • Capital mobilization is a traditional business of commercial banks and is one of the core foundations for the development of a bank. Capital mobilization is the main input in the operation of a bank, and this is also the basis for generating output for credit activities as well as other banking activities. This study aims to determine the main factors that affect the decisions of individual customers to put savings deposit in Vietnamese commercial banks. Survey data collected from 403 individual customers were analyzed to provide evidence. The results from the multiple regression analysis by using SPSS software revealed that all scales in this study were reliable, and there were six components impacting the savings deposit decision of individual customers from the strongest to the weakest in the following order: the form of promotion, bank brand, service quality, interest rate policy, and employee knowledge and attitude. Besides, the finding showed customers who have high income tend to have a stronger decision on savings deposits in commercial banks. The main findings of this article provide some empirical implications for marketers in banks and serve as a suggestion to improve these factors in order to retain and attract individual customers' savings deposit decisions.
