Mg-9wt.%Al and Mg-9wt.%-1.6wt%Zn/SiCp(particle size $40{\mu}m$) metal-matrix-composite specimens were manufactured by rheo-compocasting method, known for its effect of improving the wettability. The ceramic reinforcement particles(SiCp) were dispersed in the semi-solid magnesium alloy matrix slurry being vigorously stirred in a high frequency induction furnace under inert atmosphere. A microstructural study of the dispersed particles in the specimens, prepared under different conditions as regards the time(10min, 20min, 30min) and temperature of the stirring, was made with the aid of optical microscope and SEM. The effect of superheating was also observed. It is revealed that 30 minutes' stirring time of the semi-solid at 40% solid fraction temperature(Mg-9wt.%Al : $590^{\circ}C$, AZ91 : $576^{\circ}C$), as determined by the lever rule, gives a satisfactorily uniform distribution of the particles. The superheating is observed to enhance further the uniformity.
The activation of Mg-10 wt%$Fe_2O_3$ was completed after one hydriding-dehydriding cycle. Activated Mg-10 wt%$Fe_2O_3$ absorbed 5.54 wt% H for 60 min at 593 K under 12 bar $H_2$, and desorbed 1.04 wt% H for 60 min at 593 K under 1.0 bar $H_2$. The effect of the reactive grinding on the hydriding and dehydriding rates of Mg was weak. The reactive grinding of Mg with $Fe_2O_3$ is believed to increase the $H_2$-sorption rates by facilitating nucleation (by creating defects on the surface of the Mg particles and by the additive), by making cracks on the surface of Mg particles and reducing the particle size of Mg and thus by shortening the diffusion distances of hydrogen atoms. The added $Fe_2O_3$ and the $Fe_2O_3$ pulverized during mechanical grinding are considered to help the particles of magnesium become finer. Hydriding-dehydriding cycling is also considered to increase the $H_2$-sorption rates of Mg by creating defects and cracks and by reducing the particle size of Mg.
The effects of Sn addition and solution treatment on corrosion behavior were studied in AZ91 magnesium casting alloy. The addition of 5%Sn contributed to the introduction of $Mg_2Sn$ phase, to the reduction in dendritic cell size and to the increase in the amount of secondary phases. After the solution treatment, trace amount of $Al_8Mn_5$ particles were observed in the ${\alpha}$-(Mg) matrix for the AZ91 alloy, while $Mg_2Sn$ phase with high thermal stability was additionally found in the AZ91-5%Sn alloy. Before the solution treatment, the AZ91-5%Sn alloy had better corrosion resistance than the Sn-free alloy, which is caused by the enhanced barrier effect of the (${\beta}+Mg_2Sn$) phases formed more continuously along the dendritic cell boundaries. It is interesting to note that after the solution treatment, the corrosion rate of both alloys became increased, but the Sn-added alloy showed higher corrosion rate than the Sn-free alloy. The microstructural examination on the corroded surfaces revealed that the remaining $Mg_2Sn$ particles in the solution-treated AZ91-5%Sn alloy play a role in accelerating corrosion by galvanic coupling with the ${\alpha}$-(Mg) matrix.
The bi-materials with Al-Mg alloy and its composites reinforced with SiC and $Al_2O_3$ particles were prepared by conventional powder metallurgy method. The A1-5 wt%Mg and composite mixtures were compacted under $150{\sim}450\;MPa$, and then the mixtures compacted under 400 MPa were sintered at $773{\sim}1173K$ for 5h. The obtained bi-materials with Al-Mg/SiCp composite showed the higher relative density than those with $Al-Mg/Al_2O_3$ composite after compaction and sintering. Based on the results, the bi-materials compacted under 400 MPa and sintered at 873K for 5h were used for mechanical tests. In the composite side of bi-materials, the SiC particles were densely distributed compared to the $Al_2O_3$ particles. The bi-materials with Al-Mg/SiC composite showed the higher micro-hardness than those with $Al-Mg/Al_2O_3$ composite. The mechanical properties were evaluated by the compressive test. The bi-materials revealed almost the same value of 0.2% proof stress with Al-Mg alloy. Their compressive strength was lower than that of Al-Mg alloy. Moreover, impact absorbed energy of bi-materials was smaller than that of composite. However, the bi-materials with Al-Mg/SiCp composite particularly showed almost similar impact absorbed energy to $Al-Mg/Al_2O_3$ composite. From the observation of microstructure, it was deduced that the bi-materials was preferentially fractured through micro-interface between matrix and composite in the vicinity of macro-interface.

The most recent developments in two areas: (a) synthesis of inorganic particles with control over size and shape by polymer additives, and (b) synthesis of inorganic-polymer hybrid materials by bulk polymerization of blends of monomers with nanosized crystals are reviewed. The precipitations of inorganics, such as zinc oxide or calcium carbonate, in presence and under the control of bishydrophilic block or comb copolymers, are relevant to the field of Biomineralization. The application of surface modified latex particles, used as controlling agents, and the formation of hybrid crystals in which the latex is embedded in otherwise perfect crystals, are discussed. The formation of nano sized spheres of amorphous calcium carbonate, stabilized by surfactant-like polymers, is also discussed. Another method for the preparation of nanosized inorganic functional particles is the controlled pyrolysis of metal salt complexes of poly(acrylic acid), as demonstrated by the syntheses of lithium cobalt oxide and zinc/magnesium oxide. Bulk polymerization of methyl methacrylate blends, with for example, nanosized zinc oxide, revealed that the mechanisms of tree radical polymerization respond to the presence of these particles. The termination by radical-radical interaction and the gel effect are suppressed in favor of degenerative transfer, resulting in a polymer with enhanced thermal stability. The optical properties of the resulting polymer-particle blends are addressed based on the basic discussion of the miscibility of polymers and nanosized particles.

In this study, we are aimed to prevent grain growth of semi-solid AZ31 magnesium alloys during reheating process. The semi-solid AZ31+(Ca) billets were investigated by using metallographic analysis, X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy in order to elucidate the effect of Ca addition during reheating process. The grain growth of semi-solid AZ31+(Ca) billet was reduced with increasing Ca content during reheating. The grain size of AZ31+(Ca) billet decreased with increasing volume fraction of Al2Ca particles. The grain growth rate constant K calculated by Oswald ripening LSW theory in AZ31+1.5wt.% Ca billet was the lowest 129.

Spherical $MgB_2$ powders was synthesized with the ultrasonic spray pyrolysis(USP) process using aqueous solutions of boron and magnesium ion. The properties of synthesized $MgB_2$ powder were characterized by XRD, SEM and EDS. A small amount of MgO was detected as the secondary phase out of the synthesized powder and the ratios of $MgB_2$ to MgO increased with increasing furnace temperature. The particle size and morphology of $MgB_2$ powder were investigated with varying molar concentration of the boron and magnesium solution and furnace temperature between $600^{\circ}C$ and $1000^{\circ}C$ in $Ar/H_2$. The average particle size of $MgB_2$ showed narrow distribution ranging from 300nm to 400nm. The morphology of particles exhibited mostly spherical shapes and uniform distribution.
One-dimensional MgO nanostructures with various morphologies were synthesized by a thermal evaporation method. The synthesis process was carried out in air at atmospheric pressure, which made the process very simple. A mixed powder of magnesium and active carbon was used as the source powder. The morphologies of the MgO nanostructures were changed by varying the growth temperature. When the growth temperature was 700 ℃, untapered nanowires with smooth surfaces were grown. As the temperature increased to 850 ℃, 1,000 ℃ and 1,100 ℃, tapered nanobelts, tapered nanowires and then knotted nanowires were sequentially observed. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the MgO nanostructures had a cubic crystallographic structure. Energy dispersive X-ray analysis showed that the nanostructures were composed of Mg and O elements, indicating high purity MgO nanostructures. Fourier transform infrared spectra peaks showed the characteristic absorption of MgO. No catalyst particles were observed at the tips of the one-dimensional nanostructures, which suggested that the one-dimensional nanostructures were grown in a vapor-solid growth mechanism.
The effect of alloying element Ca (0, 1, and 2 wt%) on corrosion resistance and bioactivity of the as-received and anodized surface of rolled plate AM60 alloys was investigated. A plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) was carried out to form anodic oxide film in $0.5mol\;dm^{-3}\;Na_3PO_4$ solution. The corrosion behavior was studied by polarization measurements while the in vitro bioactivity was tested by soaking the specimens in Simulated Body Fluid (1.5xSBF). Optical micrograph and elemental analysis of the substrate surfaces indicated that the number of intermetallic particles increased with Ca content in the alloys owing to the formation of a new phase $Al_2Ca$. The corrosion resistance of AM60 specimens improved only slightly by alloying with 2 wt% Ca which was attributed to the reticular distribution of $Al_2Ca$ phase existed in the alloy that might became barrier for corrosion propagation across grain boundaries. Corrosion resistance of the three alloys was significantly improved by coating the substrates with anodic oxide film formed by PEO. The film mainly composed of magnesium phosphate with thickness in the range $30-40{\mu}m$. The heat resistant phase of $Al_2Ca$ was believed to retard the plasma discharge during anodization and, hence, decreased the film thickness of Ca-containing alloys. The highest apatite forming ability in 1.5xSBF was observed for AM60-1Ca specimens (both substrate and anodized) that exhibited more degradation than the other two alloys as indicated by surface observation. The increase of surface roughness and the degree of supersaturation of 1.5xSBF due to dissolution of Mg ions from the substrate surface or the release of film compounds from the anodized surface are important factors to enhance deposition of Ca-P compound on the specimen surfaces.
The purpose of the research was to examine the utilization of waste bittern from salt farm as a source for producing magnesium (Mg). In this work, a precipitation process for recovering Mg, where Mg is precipitated as $Mg(OH)_2$ by the addition of NaOH solution, was investigated. At the NaOH/Mg molar ratios of 2.70 : 1 to 2.75 : 1 and pH 9.5-10, > 99% of Mg could be precipitated from the bittern. The molar concentration of NaOH solution added as an alkaline reagent had no significant influence on the recovery efficiency of Mg precipitate. The particle size of Mg precipitate was strongly affected by the flow rate of caustic addition. The faster the flow rate of caustic addition, the smaller particles were formed. The Mg precipitate recovered was 100-120 g per 1 L of bittern and contained 94% $Mg(OH)_2$ after washing with water. Our results showed that the bittern can be used as a potential resource for Mg production.
