mCherry is one of the well-understood red fluorescent proteins which has a similar tertiary structure as GFPs, but pH resistant due to the lack of hydrogen bond network. Whereas mCherry-I202T showed far-red fluorescence and also pH sensitive property because of the additional hydrogen bond formed by substituting Ile of 202 amino acid sequence on mCherry with Thr. In order to verify the pH sensitive characteristic of mCherry-I202T owing to the extension of hydrogen bond, UV-vis spectrum was measured over the range of acidic to basic pH. We also demonstrate further possibilities of applying mCherry-I202T as a pH sensor.

A multiplex RT-PCR (mRT-PCR) assay was developed for the detection of the recently reported viruses, Cherry virus A (CVA), Little cherry virus 1 (LChV-1), and Little cherry virus 2 (LChV-2), in cherry plants in Korea. Eight sets of primers were designed for each virus and their specificity was tested by using various combinations of mixed primer sets. From the designed primer sets, one combination was selected and further evaluated to estimate the optimum temperature and detection limits of the mRT-PCR. A newly developed mRT-PCR assay was also tested using 20 cherry samples collected in the field. This mRT-PCR assay may be a useful tool for field surveys of diseases and the rapid detection of these three viruses in cherry plants.
In Korea and China, cherry elaeagnus (Elaeagnus multiflora Thunb.) has been used traditionally to treat cough, diarrhea, itching, and foul sores. Therefore, in this study, the ethanol and water extracts of cherry elaeagnus leaves were examined for their antioxidant activities. The ethanol extract of the cherry elaeagnus leaves contained more phenolics than the water extract. All the cherry elaeagnus leaf extracts had higher 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging ability than ascorbic acid at concentrations of $250-1,000\;{\mu}g/mL$. The ethanol extract also showed higher superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity compared to the water extract. Furthermore, the SOD-like activity of the ethanol extract amounted to 89% of that of ascorbic acid at a concentration of $500\;{\mu}g/mL$. The nitrite scavenging ability and xanthine oxidase inhibitory (XOI) activity of the ethanol extract were higher than those of the water extract. In particular, the ethanol extract had higher XOI activity than ascorbic acid at a concentration of $1,000\;{\mu}g/mL$.
This study was carried out to optimize the production of immature green cherry tomato pickles and to produce green cherry tomato pickles of good sensory quality. The composition of immature green cherry tomato pickles was optimized using a central composition design with 3 variables and 3 levels. The overall acceptability score, based on sensory evaluation, was best, when the immature green cherry tomato pickles contained 231 g of vinegar, 52.6 g of salt, 168.3 g of sugar, 204 g of tomatoes, and 231 $m{\ell}$ of water. The statically predicted optimal formulation of immature green cherry tomato pickles on overall acceptability value was 33.54%(w/w) of vinegar, 7.64%(w/w) of salt, 25.28%(w/w) of sucrose, 33.54%(w/w) of water. The optimal conditions for producing immature green cherry tomato pickles should consider the factors of time and temperature of storage.
A soft rot of fruits caused by Mucor racemosus occurred on cherry tomato collected in Agricultural Products Wholesale Market in Jinju, Korea. The disease infection usually occurred wounded areas after cracking of fruits. At first, the lesions started with water soaked and rapidly softened and diseased lesion gradually expanded. Colonies were white to brownish to gray in color. Sporangia were $32{\sim}54\;{\mu}m$ in size and globose in shape. Sporangiophores were $8{\sim}14\;{\mu}m$ in width. Sporangiospores were $5{\sim}12\;{\times}\;4{\sim}8\;{\mu}m$ in size, ellipsoidal to subglobose in shape. Columella was $27{\sim}42\;{\mu}m$ in size, obovoid, ellipsoidal, cylindrical-ellipsoidal, slightly pyriform in shape. Chlamydospores were numerous in sporangiophores and barrel-shaped when young, subglobose in old cultures. Optimum growth temperature was about $25^{\circ}C$. The fungus was identified as M. racemosus Fres.. This is the first report of soft rot on cherry tomato caused by M. racemosus in Korea.

In August 2013, brown rot was observed on cherry fruits (Prunus avium L.) in Hwaseong city, Korea. Fruit rot first appears as small, circular brown spots that increase rapidly in size causing the entire fruit to rot. Grayish spores appear in tufts on rotted areas. Based on these morphological characteristics, the two isolates were identified as Monilinia fructicola. Molecular analysis of 5.8S subunit and flanking internal transcribed spacers (ITS1 and ITS2) was performed to confirm the identification. The ITS sequences had 100% identity with those of other reference M. fructicola isolates of NCBI GenBank. Pathogenicity was tested using spore suspension inoculation on wounded or unwounded cherry fruits. The lesions were observed on wounded and unwounded fruits after inoculation for 7 days. This is the first report on M. fructicola causing brown rot on cherry fruits in Korea.
Activated carbons were obtained by activating wild cherry stones with different concentrations of phosphoric acid or zinc chloride at different temperatures. The adsorption of $N_2$ at 77 K and of $CO_2$ at 273 K was followed and the data were analyzes by considering different adsorption models. The activated carbons obtained measured high surface area with the most of the surface in all samples located in micropores. Fair agreement was found between the nitrogen surface areas calculated from the BET-, t-, ${\alpha}$- and DR- methods, although the first three are based on surface coverage whereas the latter is based on micropore filling. The carbon dioxide surface areas calculated by the DA equation were smaller than the comparable nitrogen areas. This was ascribed to domination of surface coverage mechanism, the absence of activated diffusion process. Based on this explanation the $CO_2$-surface areas as calculated by DA equation should be taken with great reservation.
This study verifies the polyphenol and flavonoid contents of a dried extract, as well as its antioxidant effect and growth inhibitory effect on cancer cells to investigate the potential of yellow cherry tomatoes as a physiologically active food material. The polyphenol and flavonoid contents were determined as 10.96 ± 1.57 and 4.12 ± 0.41 mg/g, respectively. The antioxidant activity was confirmed by measuring DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging ability, and RC50-the concentration that reduces free radicals by 50%-were determined as 490.83 ± 17.35 ㎍/mL and 355.90 ± 0.79 ㎍/mL, respectively. The dried extract showed no cytotoxicity with respect to normal hepatocytes (Chang) and no growth inhibitory activity with respect to A549 lung cancer cells, whereas dried extract showed growth inhibitory activities of 15.2% and 18.4% with respect to human cervical adenocarcinoma (HeLa) and human hepatocellular carcinoma (HepG2) cells, respectively, when treated with a concentration at 100㎍/mL. The results of this study confirm the potential of yellow cherry tomatoes as a physiologically active food material by verifying their antioxidant activity and their growth inhibitory activity with respect to cervical and liver cancer cells.
This study was carried out to investigate the effectiveness of the Lycopene cultivar of cherry tomatoes as a functional food and food material by measuring the total polyphenol and flavonoid content, anti-oxidative and anticancer activity. The contents of polyphenol and flavonoid were $12.28{\pm}1.78mg$ and $3.89{\pm}0.54mg$ per one g of dried cherry tomatoes respectively. The anti-oxidative activity of the cherry tomato was verified by measuring ${\alpha}$-${\alpha}$-diphenyl-${\beta}$-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity (DSA), 2,2'-azinobis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid (ABTS) radical scavenging activity (ASA) and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). 50% of radical scavenging concentrations ($IC_{50}$) of DSA and ASA were $328.64{\pm}4.190{\mu}g/mL$ and $350.61{\pm}3.300{\mu}g/mL$ respectively. FRAP value was $26.92{\pm}0.68{\mu}mol$$Fe^{2+}/g$. The effects of the cherry tomato extract on the growth of a normal lung cell (Hel299), lung cancer cell (A549), cervical cancer cell (HeLa) and a liver cancer cell (HepG2) were investigated using MTT assay. The cherry tomato extract showed a significantly strong growth inhibition effects against A549 cell and $IC_{50}$ was $375.46{\pm}33.670{\mu}g/mL$. The extract also inhibited growths of HeLa and HepG2 cells weakly. In this study we found that Lycopene cultivar of cherry tomato had anti-oxidative activity and strong inhibition effect against lung cancer cells. These results indicate that the Lycopene cultivar of cherry tomato would be a functional food and food material.
The foraging activities of bumblebee, Bombus terrestris were surveyed to compare with two types of cherry-tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum. M) house as Nutriculture and Sawdustculture on southern part of Korea in winter . The summary of the result obtained for this purpose are below: In the interval of blooming time from Sawdustculture type. In the interval of the time from the first visting on the flower by a worker of B. terrestris after a flower of cherry-tomato bloomed. nutriculture type was more shorter than Sawdustculture type. Therefore there was no difference in the average pollination time from the flower's blossoming according to the inflorescence of the first visiting time of B. terrestris worker on the each flower between Nutriculture type and Sawdustculture type. The foraging activites of B. terrestris worker in two kinds of cherry-tomatio cultivating house had shown same patterns. and han not been found to the differences.
