  • The light sensitivity and angular dependence of the $Mg_2SiO_4$:Tb(MSO-5) TLD which affect the accuracy of the radiation dose measurement are investigated. Light-induced thermoluminescence of MSO-S TLD under the 200 lux fluorescent and the incandescent lamp for 8 hours are corresponding to 11 and 3 mR exposure, respectively. TL intensity ratio of the incident angle of ${\pm}80^{\circ}$ to normal incidence for MSO-S and badge type MSO-L are about 0.8 and 0.15, respectively.

  • Effect of light and pH on mycelial growth and sporangium formation of Phytophthora capsici Leon, causal fungus of fruit rot of red pepper was carried out on culture media. The maximum mycelial growth occurred at $25^{\circ}C$ and pH 6.0 on potato sucrose agar. The fungus did not produce sporangia readily in dark condition. However, abundant sporulation occurred by illuminating continuous cool white fluorescent light with 2000 lux for 48 hrs. at $20{\pm}2^{\circ}C$. Oat meal agar was one of the best media for sporangia formation.

  • This study was conducted to obtain a supply of conidia sufficient for screening mungbean mutant lines for a source of resistance to Cercospora leaf spot caused by Cercospora canescens Ellis and Martin. Abundant sporulation occurred in cultures on mungbean leaf decoction oatmeal agar(MOA) exposed to about 2,500 Lux of fluorescent light. but it did not occur in continuous darkness. The conditions that produced maximum number of conidia was not coincided with those for vegetative growth and pigmentation in culture medium. Removal of aerial mycelium in culture by brushing with sterile water so enhanced the conidial production that oatmeal agar medium(OA) could be useful for production of abundant conidia by the treatment.

  • Three kinds of shading materials, styrol-foam board, pine board and polytex, were examined and compared with ordinary shading, and the effects of light intensity and the temperature under the shadings on the photosynthesis and the root growth of the Korean ginseng were studied to improve the shading on the ginseng field. The amounts of photosynthesis of the ginseng leaves at 2$0^{\circ}C$ were significantly larger than those at 3$0^{\circ}C$ in the same light intensity. At 2$0^{\circ}C$, the maximum photosynthesis occured at 35, 000 lux, but at 3$0^{\circ}C$, the amount of photosynthesis was rapidly reduced by higher light intensity over 26, 200 lux. The best root growth occurred under the polytex shading and the styrol-foam board shading was also effective for ginseng growth. Under the ordinary shading, the root growth of ginseng planted on rear line was very poor but under the styrol-foam or the polytex shading, the root growth showed little difference between the ginsengs planted on rear line and front line.

  • This paper presents field measurements on daylighting and electric lighting with dimming controlled systems for a small office in Seoul, Korea. And the main purpose of this study is to provide the evaluation data of lighting energy performance when a dimming system is installed. For the performance evaluation, the mock-up room(3.6x7.2x2.6[m]) was used for the actual test. The results of this study were as follows; 1) The correlation between daylight illuminance at a workplane(Ed) and the photosensor signal(Sd) was an important factor affecting the performance of daylight responsive dimming system, 2) The mock-up office space gained a sufficient workplace illuminance of 579[lux] with the dimming control system 3) About 53[%J of monthly lighting energy could be saved using the dimming control system.

  • Physiological conditions for hydrogen evolution by Rhodopseudomonas sphaeroides K-7 are examined. Larger amount of molecular hydrogen was evolved at $30^{\circ}C$, pH6.8-7.0 under anaerobically illuminated condition of about 12, 000 lux by the organism. The heighest rates of hydrogen evolution were observed in the culture with the organic acids such as acetate, DL-lactate or DL-malate in media containing L-glutamate as a nitrogen source. Hydrogen was also evolved from glucose with the rate of $178.9\;{\mu}l/hr/mg$ cells (dry weight). When glucose was adopted a a sole carbon source, however, conside erable time lag of about 20hours was required for hydrogen evolution. The resting cells stored at $30^{\circ}C$ under argon maintained the rate of hydrogen evolution in nearly about 90% of initial one even 40 days of storation.

  • Various biosensors were evaluated for identifying and detecting foodborne pathogens in a rapid and effective manner. First, five strains of Escherichia coli and six strains of Salmonella were identified using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and a statistical program. For doing this, lipopolysaccharides (LPSs) and outer membrane proteins (OMPs) were extracted from a cell wall of each bacterial strain. As a result, each strain was identifed at the level of 97% for E. coli and 100% for Salmonella. Second, E. coli O157:H7, S. Enteritidis, and Listeria monocytogenes were identified by multiplex PCR products from four specific genes of each bacteria using a capillary electrophoresis (CE). Also, ground beef for E. coli O157:H7, lettuce for S. Enteritidis, and hot dog for L. monocytogenes were used to determine the possibility of detecting pathogens in foods. Foods inoculated with respective pathogen were cultivated for six hours and multiplex PCR products were obtained and assessed. The minimum detection levels of tested bacteria were <10 cells/g, <10 cells/g, and $10^4$ cells/g for E. coli O157:H7, S. Enteritidis, and L. monocytogenes, respectively. Third, it was possible to detect S. Typhimurium in a pure culture and lettuce by a bioluminescence-based detection assay using both recombinant bacteriophage P22::luxI and a bioluminescent bioreporter. In addition, bacteriophage T4 was quantitatively monitored using E. coli including luxCDABE genes.

  • A Reasonable lighting should be provided for doing night work. All works far construction site can be exposed to potential hazard at night work The purpose of this study is to provide a standard of the lighting against accidents due to insufficient lighting at site. one pilot tea one at building work site, one at mad work site of it have been conducted for figuring out illumination change depending worker's activity direction, using lux checker to show it as numerical indication. The direction are changed with a range of 30, 60, 90, and 135 degree to be checked at site. Tests results show that $10\%\;and\;15\%$ of lighting could be decreased by changing the working direction of works at site. Therefore, steep slope place, cave work and backside of structural elements such as a column, deep beam should be considered for keeping sufficient and reasonable lighting. It is found that $50\%more$ illumination Lux needs f3r civil work than for building work.

  • We have from water samples of Kwalim, Dochang, and Mulwang reservoirs in Kyonggi-Do, where cyanobacteria blooming occurred. Isolated microbes which have lytic activity for cyanobacteria. Water samples were smeared on the Anabaena cylindrica lawn and incubated in light chamber at $28^\circ{C}$, under 3000 lux for 13 days. A fungus having cyanobacterial lytic activity was isolated from the samples of Dochang reservoir. The isolate was identified as Cryptococcus laurentii by Vitek system. From the culture of the isolate, four major extracellular protein bands (29, 35.2, 40.9, 51.1 kDa) have been detected and the 29 kDa protein band was more thickly appeared in the culture with cyanobacteria.

  • The authors identified a treatment-resistant patient with chronic fatigue syndrome, characterized by chronic fatigue, headache, unrefreshing sleep. Some studies reported that chronic fatigue syndrome was associated with affective disorder, especially seasonal affective disorder and many studies reported that bright light therapy was effective in seasonal affective disorder. But efficacy of light therapy for chronic fatigue syndrome was rarely reported. We treated the patient with morning light treatment using 2500lux light box, the clinical symptoms in this case were improved. The authors suggest that the light therapy can be a treatment modality for chronic fatigue syndrome.
