  • The diets with three types of triterpenoid constituents, which were isolated from Lactuca indica, provoked significant changes of serum lipoprotein-cholesterol meta bolisms of hypercholesterolemic rats induced by high-cholesterol diet, together with the reduction of atherogenic index. Especially, triterpene acetates which have triterpene moieties such as ${\beta}-amyrin$, ${\alpha}-amyrin$, lupeol, pseudotaraxasterol, taraxasterol and germanicol showed a considerable hypocholesterolemic activity. The rat given orally with triterpene acetates did not exhibit a significantly higher value of atherogenic index than that of normal rats.

  • A mixture of cerebrosides (1) and four triterpenoids (2 - 5) have been isolated from the hexane- and EtOAc-soluble fractions of the roots of Synurus deltoides (Ait.) Nakai (Compositae). Triterpenoid structures were determined as lupeol (2), $\beta-amyrin$ (3), $\alpha-amyrin$ (4), and ursolic acid (5). Synurus cerebrosides (1) were characterized as a common long chain base (2S,3S,4R,8E)-2-amino-8-octadecene-1,3,4-triol and fatty acyl chains; palmitic acid, (2R)-2-hydroxybehenic acid, (2R)-2-hydroxytricosanoic acid, (2R)-2-hydroxylignoceric acid, (2R)-2-hydroxypentacosanoic acid, and (2R)-2-hydroxyhexacosanoic acid. The synurus cerebrosides (1) were the first isolation from a natural source.

  • Bioactivity guided phytochemical study of the petroleum ether and butanol extracts of Clematis hirsuta resulted in the isolation of 12 compounds. Rat paw edema as a model of acute inflammation was used to evaluate the anti-inflammatory activity of the extracts and the chromatographic fractions. Five known sterols and triterpenes namely: ${\beta}-amyrin$ (1), lupeol (2), ${\beta}-sitosterol$ (3), oleanolic acid (4) and stigmasterol glycoside (5) were isolated from the petroleum ether extract. The n-butanol extract afforded two compounds reported for the first time from natural source: (S)-(+)-dihydro-5-(hydroxymethyl)-2(3H)-furanone (7) and (s)-(-)-5-hydroxymethyl-2(5H)-furanone (8). In addition, anemonin (6), dihydro-4-hydroxy-5-(hydroxymethyl)-2(3H)-furanone (2-deoxy-D-ribono-1,4-lactone) (9), biophenol (cimidahurin) (10), glucose (11) and sucrose (12) were also identified. The structures were determined from spectroscopic data including 1D- and 2D-NMR experiments.

  • It is well known that inflammation is associated with neurodegenerative disorders, including Alzheimer' disease, Parkinson's disease and ischemia. Nitric oxide (NO), a pro-inflammatory mediator, is produced by inducible NO synthase (iNOS) in microglia as well as macrophages and appears to account for neurodegeneration. In this study, we aimed to isolate NO inhibitors from Pyrus pyrifolia by activity guided purification. As a result, we identified daucosterol and ${\beta}$-sitosterol, which have not been isolated from this plant before. This article also describes NO inhibitory activities of the methanol extract of Pyrus pyrifolia fruit and the isolated compounds from this, which are lupeol, betulin, betulinic acid, ${\beta}$-sitosterol and daucosterol, in LPS-activated RAW 264.7 and BV2 cell lines. Western blot analysis was performed to clarify the underlying mechanism of NO inhibition in the two cell lines.

  • Proso millet (Pacnicum miliaceum L.) has a various of functional substances, so the demand is increasing as interest in human health benefits. In particular, miliacin, a triterpenoid in proso millet, is known to be effective in hair loss due to its promoting metabolism and proliferation of keratinocytes and showing protective effects from apoptosis. In this study, proso millet oil was extracted and analyzed by GC/MS using the extraction method of unsaponifiable substances after saponification reaction. The components of proso millet oil were confirmed through qualitative analysis by GC/MS. The miliacin content of 5 varieties of proso millet and 2 varieties of foxtail for comparison was analyzed. In the result, components of pentacyclic triterpenes such as β-amyrine and lupeol were detected in proso millet, and the content of miliacin was highest in Hallachal at 370.38±0.04 ㎍/100 mg oil. In addition, the content of miliacin was not detected in Samdachal and Samdamae, which are varieties of foxtail millet.
