  • Luminescence properties of asymmetric double quantum well structure composed of $Al_x/Ga_{1-x}$ /As AIAs/GaAs have been studied by steady state and time-resolved photoluminescence and phtoluminescence excitation spectroscopy at low temperature. Two quantum well samples with different barrier thickness (15$\AA$ and 150$\AA$) were prepared to investigate the dependence of tunneling characteristics on barrier thickness. The abscence of excitonic recombination peak from $Al_x/Ga_{1-x}$As well for the 15$\AA$ barrier sample indicates a very fast electron tunneling to GaAs well. Meanwhile, T-X transition between well and barrier is supposed to be a major route for the fast decay of luminescence from $Al_x/Ga_{1-x}$As well in the 150$\AA$ barrier sample. Time-resolved photduminescence from GaAs well of 15$\AA$ sample shows the exsitence of the rise with 100 ps which is attributed to the hole tunneling.

  • It is described that the proton beam induces micro-size defects and electronic deep levels in luminescence Thin Film. Coincidence Doppler Broadening Positron Annihilation Spectroscopy (CDBPAS) and Positron lifetime Spectroscopy were applied to study of characteristics of a poly crystal samples. In this investigation the numerical analysis of the Doppler spectra was employed to the determination of the shape parameter, S-parameter value. The samples were exposed by 3.0 MeV proton beams with the intensities ranging between 0 to ${\sim}10^{14}$ particles. The S-parameter values decreased as increased the proton beam, that indicates the protons trapped in vacancies. Lifetime ${\tau}_1$ shows that positrons are trapped in mono vacancies. Lifetime ${\tau}_2$ is not changed according to proton irradiation that indicate the cluster vacancies of the grain structure.

  • $Eu_2(SO_4)_3$ was synthesized by chemical precipitation method and the crystal structure was determined by Rietveld analysis. The compound crystallizes in monoclinic space group C2/c. In the air environment, $Eu_2(SO_4)_3$ is stable up to $670^{\circ}C$. The sample of $Eu_2(SO_4)_3$ was examined by Raman, Fourier-transform infrared absorption and luminescence spectroscopy methods. The low site symmetry of $SO_4$ tetrahedra results in the appearance of the IR inactive ${\nu}_1$ mode around $1000cm^{-1}$ and ${\nu}_2$ modes below $500cm^{-1}$. The band intensities redistribution in the luminescent spectra of $Eu^{3+}$ ions is analyzed in terms of the peculiarities of its local environment.

  • cis,cis-1,2,3,4-Tetraphenylbutadiene has been synthesized and its optical properties are investigated by using UV-Vis absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. Thin films of tetraphenylbutadiene prepared from thin layer chromatography(TLC) displays strong luminescence and used for the detection of vapor of organic halide. Tetraphenylbutadiene shows dramatic quenching photoluminescence under exposure of chloroform vapor.

  • The interaction of U(VI) (hexavalent uranium) species with natural organic matter (NOM) in KURT (KAERI Underground Research Tunnel) groundwater is investigated using a laser spectroscopic technique. The luminescence spectra of the NOM are observed in the ultraviolet and blue wavelength regions by irradiating a laser beam at 266 nm in groundwater. The luminescence spectra of U(VI) species in groundwater containing uranium concentrations of $0.034-0.788mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ are measured in the green-colored wavelength region. The luminescence characteristics (peak wavelengths and lifetime) of U(VI) in the groundwater agree well with those of $Ca_2UO_2(CO_3)_3(aq)$ in a standard solution prepared in a laboratory. The luminescence intensities of U(VI) in the groundwater are weaker than those of $Ca_2UO_2(CO_3)_3(aq)$ in the standard solution at the same uranium concentrations. The luminescence intensities of $Ca_2UO_2(CO_3)_3(aq)$ in the standard solution mixed with the groundwater are also weaker than those of $Ca_2UO_2(CO_3)_3(aq)$ in the standard solution at the same uranium concentrations. These results can be ascribed to calcium-U(VI)-carbonate species interacting with NOM and forming non-radiative U(VI) complexes in groundwater.

  • To improve the luminescence characteristics of high-efficiency alternating-current plasma display panels (AC-PDPs), we developed a new hoof-type electrode structure, and we studied the spatiotemporal behavior of the density of the excited Xenon atom in the $1s_5$ metastable state via laser absorption spectroscopy. Using this structure, the maximum density of the excited Xenon atom per cell was improved by 2.4 times that when the conventional electrode structure was used.

  • Eight coordinated terbium(III) complexes, tris (2-pyrazinecarboxylato)(phenanthroline) terbium(III) [$Tb(pzc)_3$(phen)], tris (5-methyl-2-pyrazinecarboxylato) (phenanthroline) terbium(III) [$Tb(mpzc)_3$(phen)] and tris(2-picolinato) (phenanthroline) terbium(III) [$Tb(pic)_3$(phen)], have been synthesized and characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), UV-Visible and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy shows that these complexes emitted strong green luminescence. When powder samples of the $Tb^{3+}$ complexes are examined using time-resolved spectroscopic analysis, the luminescence lifetimes are found to be 0.87 ms and 1.0 ms, respectively. Thermogravimetric analysis reveals the terbium complexes to have good thermal stability up to $333-379^{\circ}C$. Cyclic voltammetry shows that HOMO-LUMO energy gap of the $Tb^{3+}$ complexes ranges from 4.26~4.41 eV. These values are similar to those obtained from the UV-visible spectra. Overall, the synthesized $Tb^{3+}$ complexes may be useful advanced materials for green light emitting devices.

  • The effect of thermal anneal on the characteristics of structural properties and the enhancement of luminescence and photovoltaic (PV) characteristics of silicon-rich silicon-nitride films were investigated. By using an ultra high vacuum ion beam sputtering deposition, B-doped silicon-rich silicon-nitride (SRSN) thin films, with excess silicon content of 15 at. %, on P-doped (n-type) Si substrate was fabricated, sputtering a highly B doped Si wafer with a BN chip by N plasma. In order to examine the influence of thermal anneal, films were then annealed at different temperature up to $1100^{\circ}C$ under $N_2$ environment. Raman, X-ray diffraction, and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy did not show any reliable evidence of amorphous or crystalline Si clusters allowing us concluding that nearly no Si nano-cluster could be formed through the precipitation of excess Si from SRSN matrix during thermal anneal. Instead, results of Fourier transform infrared and X-ray photoemission spectroscopy clearly indicated that defective, amorphous Si-N matrix of films was changed to be well-ordered thanks to high temperature anneal. The measurement of spectral ellipsometry in UV-visible range was carried out and we found that the optical absorption edge of film was shifted to higher energy as the anneal temperature increased as the results of thermal anneal induced formation of $Si_3N_4$-like matrix. These are consistent with the observation that higher visible photoluminescence, which is likely due to the presence of Si-N bonds, from anneals at higher temperature. Based on these films, PV cells were fabricated by the formation of front/back metal electrodes. For all cells, typical I-V characteristic of p-n diode junction was observed. We also tried to measure PV properties using a solar-simulator and confirmed successful operation of PV devices. Carrier transport mechanism depending on anneal temperature and the implication of PV cells based on SRSN films were also discussed.

  • The ZnS/CdS thin films were made using 99.99% ZnS and CdS(Aldrich) powders in $7{\times}10^{-6}torr$. The ZnS layer was coated over the CdS layer on an AlOx membrane within a vacuum, at the average speed of $1{\AA}/sec$. After studying the ZnS/CdS and CdS thin films(both with the dimensions of 2.52nm), using fluorescence spectroscopy and comparing the respective results together, we found that although both of the resulting spectra peaked at 390nm, the ZnS/CdS thin films showed a narrower peak, and a higher intensity of photoluminescence than the CdS thin films. The particles of ZnS/CdS thin films also proved to be more homogeneous in size. In addition, the ZnS layer acted as a protective layer. Also, after studying the spectra of ZnS/CdS thin films taken 30 days after their preparation, we found no signs of aging. These results were verified through the scanning electron microscopy(SEM), EDX analysis, thin film X-ray diffraction, and luminescence spectroscopy.
