A new vertical transition between a substrate integrated waveguide in a low-temperature co-fired ceramic substrate and an air-filled standard waveguide is proposed in this paper. A rectangular cavity resonator with closely spaced metallic vias is designed to connect the substrate integrated waveguide to the standard air-filled waveguide. Physical characteristics of an air-filled WR-22 to WR-22 transition are compared with those of the proposed transition. Simulation and experiment demonstrate that the proposed transition shows a -1.3 dB insertion loss and 6.2 GHz bandwidth with a 10 dB return loss for the back-to-back module. A 40 GHz low-temperature co-fired ceramic module with the proposed vertical transition is also implemented. The implemented module is very compact, measuring 57 mm ${\times}$ 28 mm ${\times}$ 3.3 mm.

The purpose of this research is to investigate the mechanical property and ductile-brittle transition temperature of Ti-Nb-P added extra low carbon interstitial free steel having a tensile strength of 440 MPa. The mechanical property and transition temperature of hot rolled steel sheets were more influenced by the coiling temperature rather than by the small amount of alloying element. Further, at the same composition, the property of the specimen coiled at low temperature was superior to that obtained at higher coiling temperature. The fracture surface of 0.005C-0.2Si-1.43Mn steel coiled at $630^{\circ}C$ showed a ductile fracture mode at $-100^{\circ}C$, but coiling at $670^{\circ}C$ showed a transgranular brittle fracture mode at $-90^{\circ}C$. The galvannealed 0.006C-0.07Si-1.33Mn steel sheet annealed at $810^{\circ}C$ has tensile strength and elongation of 442.8 MPa and $36.6\%$, respectively. The transition temperature of galvannealed 0.006C-0.07Si-1.33Mn steel sheet was increased with a drawing ratio, and the transition temperature of the galvannealed 0.006C-0.07Si-1.33Mn steel was $-60^{\circ}C$ at a drawing ratio of 1.8
In this study, low-carbon hypoeutectoid steels with different ferrite-pearlite microstructures were fabricated by varying transformation temperature. The microstructural factors such as pearlite fraction and interlamellar spacing, and cementite thickness were quantitatively measured and then Charpy impact tests conducted on the specimens in order to investigate the correlation of the microstructural factors with impact toughness and ductile-brittle transition temperature. The microstructural analysis results showed that the pearlite interlamellar spacing and cementite thickness decreases while the pearlite fraction increases as the transformation temperature decreases. Although the specimens with higher pearlite fractions have low absorbed energy, on the other hand, the absorbed energy is higher in room temperature than in low temperature. The upper-shelf energy slightly increases with decreasing the pearlite interlamellar spacing. However, the ductile-brittle transition temperature is hardly affected by the pearlite interlamellar spacing because there is an optimum interlamellar spacing dependent on lamellar ferrite and cementite thickness and because the increase in pearlite fraction and the decrease in interlamellar spacing with decreasing transformation temperature have a contradictory role on absorbed energy.
This paper presents a study on the room- and low-temperature impact toughness of hypoeutectoid steels with ferrite-pearlite structures. Six kinds of hypoeutectoid steel specimens were fabricated by varying the carbon content and austenitizing temperature to investigate the effect of microstructural factors such as pearlite volume fraction, interlamellar spacing, and cementite thickness on the impact toughness. The pearlite volume fraction usually increased with increasing carbon content and austenitizing temperature, while the pearlite interlamellar spacing and cementite thickness mostly decreased with increasing carbon content and austenitizing temperature. The 30C steel with medium pearlite volume fraction and higher manganese content, on the other hand, even though it had a higher volume fraction of pearlite than did the 20C steel, showed a better low-temperature toughness due to its having the lowest ductile-brittle transition temperature. This is because various microstructural factors in addition to the pearlite volume fraction largely affect the ductile-brittle transition temperature and low-temperature toughness of hypoeutectoid steels with ferrite-pearlite structure. In order to improve the room- and low-temperature impact toughness of hypoeutectoid steels with different ferrite-pearlite structures, therefore, more systematic studies are required to understand the effects of various microstructural factors on impact toughness, with a viewpoint of ductile-brittle transition temperature.
As a preceeding work for the study on dielectric characterstics of a kind of low density polyethylene introduced morphological change by mechanical method, glass transition temperature which is regarded as a macroscopic aspect for relaxation of molecular chain segments has been observed by means of temperature dependent dilatometric measurement. The origina specimen clearly shows two knees which correspond to two peaks (.gamma. and .betha. peak) in the intenal friction measurement, suggesting the existence of separated glass transition temperatures at 150.deg.k and 260.deg.k respectively. On the specimen irradiated to 100 Mrad both glass transition temperatures tend to shift towards high temperature sides because of crosslinking by irradiation. furthemore an evidence can be seen that radiation effect, even in amorphous phase, is also slelctive depending on slight morphological differences. The specimen extended to four times in length shows a peculiar nature such as negative linear thermal expansion coefficient increasing with temperature between 220.deg.k and ambient temperature and that this fact is interpreted by considering that c axis of the lattice aligns along the extended direction by drawing, further c axis inherently possesses the characteristics of negative linear thermal expansion coefficient. For the observations that the relatively small positive linear expansion on the specimen extended to ca. two times as well as the part below 220.deg.k of the specimen extended to four times, it is considered for the reason of the facts that the incompletely oriented region indicated as the middle part of Peterlin's model tends to restore partially to orginal arrangement-a kind of phase transition-as increasing with temperature.
Vanadium dioxide (VO2) is a well-known material that undergoes insulator-to-metal phase transition near room temperature. Since the conductivity of VO2 changes several orders of magnitude in the terahertz (THz) spectral range during the phase transition, VO2-based active metamaterials have been extensively studied. Experimentally, it is reported that the metal nanostructures on the VO2 thin film lowers the critical temperature significantly compared to the bare film. Here, we theoretically studied such early transition phenomena by developing an analytical model. Unlike experimental work that only measures transmission, we calculate the reflection and absorption and demonstrate that the role of absorption is quite different for bare and patterned samples; the absorption gradually increases for bare film during the phase transition, while an absorption peak is observed at the critical temperature for the metamaterials. In addition, we also discuss the gap width and VO2 thickness effects on the transition temperatures.
The ductile-brittle transition behavior of two austenitic Fe-18Cr-10Mn-N-C alloys with different grain sizes was investigated in this study. The alloys exhibited a ductile-brittle transition behavior because of an unusual brittle fracture at low temperatures unlike conventional austenitic alloys. The alloy specimens with a smaller grain size had a higher yield and tensile strengths than those with a larger grain size due to grain refinement strengthening. However, a decrease in the grain size deteriorated the low-temperature toughness by increasing the ductile-brittle transition temperature because nitrogen or carbon could enhance the effectiveness of the grain boundaries to overcome the thermal energy. It could be explained by the temperature dependence of the yield stress based on low-temperature tensile tests. In order to improve both the strength and toughness of austenitic Fe-Cr-Mn-N-C alloys with different chemical compositions and grain sizes, more systematic studies are required to understand the effect of the grain size on the mechanical properties in relation to the temperature sensitivity of yield and fracture stresses.
High temperature low cycle fatigue crack growth behavior is investigated over a range of two temperatures and various frequencies in SUS 304 stainless steel. It is found that low frequency and temperature can enhance time-dependent crack growth. With high temperature, low frequency and long crack length, ${\Delta}J_c/{\Delta}J_ f$, the ratio of creep J integral range to fatigue J integral range is increased and time-dependent crack growth is accelerated. Interaction between ${\Delta}J_f$ and ${\Delta}J_c$ is occured at high frequency and low temparature and ${\Delta}J_c$, creep J integral range is fracture mechanical parameter on transition from cycle-dependent to time dependent crack growth in creep temperature region.
In this study, six kinds of low-carbon steel specimens with different ferrite-pearlite microstructures were fabricated by varying the Nb content and the transformation temperature. The microstructural factors of ferrite grain size, pearlite fraction, interlamellar spacing, and cementite thickness were quantitatively measured based on optical and scanning electron micrographs; then, Charpy impact tests were conducted in order to investigate the correlation of the microstructural factors with the impact toughness and the ductile-brittle transition temperature (DBTT). The microstructural analysis results showed that the Nb4 specimens had ferrite grain size smaller than that of the Nb0 specimens due to the pinning effect resulting from the formation of carbonitrides. The pearlite interlamellar spacing and the cementite thickness also decreased as the transformation temperature decreased. The Charpy impact test results indicated that the impact-absorbed energy increased and the ductile-brittle transition temperature decreased with addition of Nb content and decreasing transformation temperature, although all specimens showed ductile-brittle transition behaviour.
The influence of Cu and Ni on the ductile-brittle transition behavior of metastable austenitic Fe-18Cr-10Mn-N alloys with N contents below 0.5 wt.% was investigated in terms of austenite stability and microstructure. All the metastable austenitic Fe-18Cr-10Mn-N alloys exhibited a ductile-brittle transition behavior by unusual low-temperature brittle fracture, irrespective of Cu and/or Ni addition, and deformation-induced martensitic transformation occasionally occurred during Charpy impact testing at lower temperatures due to reduced austenite stability resulting from insufficient N content. The formation of deformation-induced martensite substantially increased the ductile-brittle transition temperature(DBTT) by deteriorating low-temperature toughness because the martensite was more brittle than the parent austenite phase beyond the energy absorbed during transformation, and its volume fraction was too small. On the other hand, the Cu addition to the metastable austenitic Fe-18Cr-10Mn-N alloy increased DBTT because the presence of ${\delta}$-ferrite had a negative effect on low-temperature toughness. However, the combined addition of Cu and Ni to the metastable austenitic Fe-18Cr-10Mn-N alloy decreased DBTT, compared to the sole addtion of Ni or Cu. This could be explained by the fact that the combined addition of Cu and Ni largely enhanced austenite stability, and suppressed the formation of deformation-induced martensite and ${\delta}$-ferrite in conjunction with the beneficial effect of Cu which may increase stacking fault energy, so that it allows cross-slip to occur and thus reduces the planarity of the deformation mechanism.
