  • The neurotics analysis of a liquid metal reactor fur burning minor actinides has shown that uncertainties in the nuclear data of several key minor actinide isotopes can introduce large uncertainties in the predicted performance of the core. A comprehensive sensitivity and uncertainty analysis was performed on a 1200 MWth actinide burner designed for a low burnup reactivity swing, negative doppler coefficient, and low sodium void worth. Sensitivities were generated using depletion perturbaton methods for the equilibrium cycle of the reactor and covariance data was taken ENDF-B/V and other published sources. The relative uncertainties in the burnup swing, doppler coefficient, and void worth were conservatively estimated to be 180%, 91%, and 46%, respectively.

  • The most prominent challenge for MOSFET scaling is to reduce power consumption; however, the supply voltage ($V_{DD}$) cannot be scaled down because of the carrier injection mechanism. To overcome this limit, a new type of field-effect transistor using positive feedback as a carrier injection mechanism (FBFET) has been proposed. In this study we have investigated the electrical characteristics of a $Si_{1-x}Ge_x$ FBFET with one gate and one-sided $Si_3N_4$ spacer using TCAD simulations. To reduce the drain bias dependency, $Si_{1-x}Ge_x$ was introduced as a low-bandgap material, and the minimum subthreshold swing was obtained as 2.87 mV/dec. This result suggests that a $Si_{1-x}Ge_x$ FBFET is a promising candidate for future low-power devices.

  • A low power SRAM using elevated source level memory cells is proposed to save the write power of SRAM. It reduces the swing voltages of the bit lines and data bus by elevating the source level of the memory cells from GND to $V_{T}$ and lowering the precharge level of the bit lines and data bus from $V_{DD}$ to $V_{DD}$ - $V_{T}$. It saves the write power of SRAM without area overhead and speed degradation. An SRAM with 8K${\times}$32bits is fabricated in a 0.25um CMOS process. It saves 45% of the power in write cycles at 300MHz with 2.5V. The maximum operating frequency is 330MHz.

  • Objectives : The aim of the study is to investigate the effects of low level laser treatment (LLLT) on the gait behavior in the rat model of arthritis. Methods : Knee arthritis was induced by the injection of $125{\mu}l$ of Complete Freund's Adjuvant(CFA) into the right hind knee joint cavity. Arthritic rats were divided 3 groups; arthritis group was used for control(CON), 10 min of laser treated group(LSR10), and 30 min of laser treated group(LSR30). LLLT was applied to KI 1 for 11 times under gaseous anesthesia. We performed several analyses under catwalk test including stand and swing time, duty cycle of paw steps, intensity and print area of steps, and stride length. Results : Stand and duty cycle of paw steps were increased significantly at 12 days after arthritis induction in LSR30 group. Swing time was decreased significantly at 12 days after arthritis induction in LSR10 group. In the analysis of intensity, print area and stride length, however, results did not show statistical significance during the time point of experiments. Conclusions : The data suggest that LLLT on the rat model of CFA induced arthritis showed beneficial effects by increase of stand time and duty cycle of paw steps and decrease of swing time. Therefore, LLLT could be useful option to improve gait discomfort in arthritis patients.

  • This paper presents a fully-integrated buck converter equipped with packaging inductors. These inductors include parasitic inductances of the bonding wires and lead frames in the package. They have significantly better Q factors than the best on-chip inductors implemented on silicon. This paper also proposes a low-swing gate driver for efficient regulation of high-frequency switching converters. The low-swing driver uses the voltage drop of a diode-connect transistor. The proposed converter is designed and fabricated using a $0.13-{\mu}m$ CMOS process. The fully-integrated buck converter achieves 68.7% and 86.6% efficiency for 3.3 V/2.0 V and 2.8 V/2.3 V conversions, respectively.

  • As the increase of the fuel oil price, the demand for saving of the ship running cost is growing. To meet the needs of the shipowners, the method for low load operation has been developed by engine licenser. As one of low load operation, the turbocharger cut-out system can be utilized flexibly both full and part load operation. It can be possible to optimize fuel consumption at both full and part load operation. Tests by engine licenser with 12K98MC engine have proven that the fuel oil consumption can be reduced approximately 5%. In this paper we will study the application of main engine turbocharger cut-out system onboard a vessel. One of four turbochargers with MAN Diesel & Turbo 12K98MC-C and 12K98ME-C engine is cut out with swing gate valve. The fuel oil consumption is measured during sea trial and engine shop test.

  • This paper describes novel flip-flops with improved robustness and reduced power consumption. Variable sampling window flip-flop (VSWFF) adjusts the width of the sampling window according to input data, providing robust data latching as well as shorter hold time. The flip-flop also reduces power consumption for higher input switching activities as compared to the conventional low-power flip-flop. Clock swing-reduced variable sampling window flip-flop (CSR-VSWFF) reduces clock power consumption by allowing the use of a small swing clock. Unlike conventional reduced clock swing flip-flops, it requires no additional voltage higher than the supply voltage, eliminating design overhead related to the generation and distribution of this voltage. Simulation results indicate that the proposed flip-flops provide uniform latency for narrower sampling window and improved power-delay product as compared to conventional flip-flops. To evaluate the performance of the proposed flip-flops, test structures were designed and implemented in a $0.3\mu m$ CMOS process technology. Experimental result indicates that VSWFF yields power reduction for the maximum input switching activity, and a synchronous counter designed with CSR-VSWFF improves performance in terms of power consumption with no use of extra voltage higher than the supply voltage.

  • CMOS analog lowpass filters using speech signal bandwidth for a Asymmetrical Digital Subscriver Line(ADSL) modem are presented. Designed active lowpass filters are composed of the CMOS complementary high-swing cascode stage which can increase transconductance of an active element. As a result, their cutoff frequency are 138kHz and 1,100kHz respectively. A low-voltage high-swing cascode integrator which improved on a gain and unit gain frequency used to design the filters. The designed filters are verified by HSPICE simulation with the $0.251{\mu}m\;CMOS\;n-well$ Parameter and a single 2.5V power supply.

  • A new knee-ankle-foot-orthosis(KAFO) which uses an automatically-controlled electromechanical wrap spring clutch for the knee joint was developed in the present study. It was found that the output voltage from the foot switches of the developed KAFO was proportionally increased with respect to the applied load. The output voltage from the infrared sensor also decreased as the knee flexion angle increased. The knee joint system for the new KAFO weighs only 780g lighter than any other commercially available developed system. In addition, the solenoid reduces the reaction time for the automatic control of the knee joint. The static torque of the clutch was measured for three persons, and it satisfied the normal knee extension moment during the pre-swing. Three-dimensional gait analyses for three different gait patterns (normal gait, locked-knee gait, controlled-knee gait) from five normal subjects were conducted. Controlled-knee gait showed the maximum knee flexion angle of 40.56$\pm9.55^{\circ}$ and the maximum knee flexion moment of 0.20$\pm$0.07Nm/kg at similar periods in the normal gait. Our KAFO system satisfies both stability during stance phase and free knee flexion during the swing phase at the proper period during the gait cycle. Therefore, our KAFO system would be very useful in various low extremity orthotic applications.

  • There are two different assertions on the rolling error in the solid-controlled gyro compass which contains two rotors in its inner gyro sphere. One assertion is that there is a rolling error and the other is that there is no rolling error. This paper examines the rolling error caused by the centrifugal force by the experiment to reveal that the first assertionis reasonable, and it also attempts to explain qualitatively how the rolling error occurs. The Hokushin-Plath gyro compass is chosen as a model. The rolling error is examined by the swing test in various periods. From the tests, the following results are obtained. As long as the swing is continued under the fixed condition of the ship's heading, the swinging period and the amplitude, no error appears. In case the gyro compass is affected by the swingings except those of the cardinal planes, the error starts to appear only after the swing is finished and it is increasing slowly. It takes about 20 minutes for the error to reach its maximum value. The type of this error is a quadrantal one which makes the ship's heading high in the first and third quarters and low in the second and fourth quarters. But in each case the experimental maximum error is greater than the theorectical one.
