  • The release of hormones and the metabolism of human body are controlled by the circadian rhythm related to sleep-wake cycle. Growth hormone, prolactin, thyroid stimulating hormone, cortisol, glucose, and insulin-secretion rates fluctuate according to the sleep-wake cycle. In addition, sleep is related to the appetite regulation and carbohydrate and other energy metabolism. Hypocretin (orexin), an excitatory neuropeptide, regulates waking and diet intake, and the poor sleep increases diet intake. The short sleep duration increases one's body mass index and impairs the function of the endocrine and metabolism, causing increases in the risk of glucose intolerance and diabetes. The poor sleep quality and sleep disorders have similar impact on the metabolic function. In short, the sleep loss and the poor quality of sleep have a detrimental effect on the endocrine and energy metabolism. The improvement of sleep quality by the future research and appropriate clinical treatment would contribute to the decrease of the metabolic diseases such as diabetes.

  • A cylindrical pin fin with inside fluid is optimized based on fixed fin volume by using the one dimensional analytic method. Heat loss from the fin and the pin fin radius for fixed fin volume is presented as a function of the fin length. Temperature variation of the fin with the variation of ambient and inside fluid convection characteristic numbers and fin base thickness is listed. The maximum heat loss at the practical fin length and corresponding optimum fin length and radius are presented as a function of fin base thickness, inside convection characteristic number, fin volume and ambient convection characteristic number. One of the results shows that the optimum pin fin shape becomes relatively fatter as the fin volume increases.

  • This study was done to establish clothing sizing system which can provide good fitting of apparel and minimize the loss due to excess inventory. One demensional mesurments(R. Martin) were made with the subjects, who were girls aged 11 to 12 living in Pusan and Kyungnam. Further the above-said mesurements were used to determine optimal clothing sizes using loss function for establishment of clothing sizing system. According to the results, optimal sizes of upper clothing for the late elementary schoolgirls should include 7 sizes, which will include heightbust circumferencesleeve length. And optimal sizes of lower clothing for the late elementary schoolgirls should include 7 sizes, which will include heightbust circumferencehip circumference.

  • A cylindrical tube connection that has a voltage difference and is separated electrically by an insulator was modelled. The penetration efficiencies of charged particles passing through the connector tube were investigated. Typically, as the particle size decreases and the applied voltage difference increases, the penetration efficiency decreases. To assess the effect of the electrode geometry, various lengths of electric insulator and aerosol flow rate with a fixed tube length and tube diameter were used when calculating penetration efficiencies. The comparison of penetration efficiencies for various electrode geometry setups suggests that the penetration efficiency can be described as a function of the product of applied voltage and electrical mobility of charged particles. The diffusion loss from this and previous studies are compared. Further, an explicit form for penetration efficiency is provided as a function of a new non-dimensional parameter, $Es(=Z_pV/U_{avg}W);\;P_{es}=0.2{\cdot}{\exp}(-Es/0.6342)+0.8{\cdot}{\exp}(-Es/4.7914)$.

  • In this study, estimators which shrink towards other than the origin are developed. We discuss the harmonic mean of the observations as a reasonable center and develop estimators which shrink the MLE(${\delta}^{\circ}$) towards the harmonic mean under the loss function $L_1$. The percentage reduction of average loss(PRAL) of derived estimators compared to the usual estimator(MLE) under the loss function $L_1$ is estimated for p=4 and 8. Computer simulation shows that the risk performance of the derived estiamtors is remarkably good when the means are greater than three.

  • In this paper, the experimental design of an intake system was studied using the two microphones method and the taguchi method. The transmission loss was utilized to represent the performance of noise reduction for the intake system which was estimated by measuring sound power at inlet and outlet with two microphones, respectively. Two microphones method used in this paper was followed by wave decomposition theory The robust designing parameters of an intake system were extracted by adapting a cost function with the taguchi method, which optimized the process. Finally the effectiveness of the propose method was validated with the experimental data.

  • The knowledge of substrate material properties is important in antenna design. We present a technique to accurately characterize the dielectric constant and loss tangent of an antenna substrate based on the measurements of antenna's reflection coefficient and bandwidth. In this technique, an error function is formulated by combinations of the reflection coefficient and bandwidth of measured and simulated data, and then an optimization technique is used to efficiently search for the substrate properties that minimize the error function. The results show that the method is effective in retrieving the dielectric constant and loss tangent of the antenna substrate without the need of additional test fixtures as in conventional substrate characterization methods.

  • The objective of this paper is to investigate the effect of factors on the dynamic stiffness variation of boring bar. The experiment was carried out by Taguchi Method and Orthogonal array table. The results indicate that overhang was found out to be dominant factor with 95% confident intervals and feed rate and depth of cut were insignificant. In addition, analysis of loss function shows that loss value increased sharply from 3D to 4D(D is a shank diameter). Consequently, there is critical point which changes property of dynamic stiffness.

  • A thermally asymmetric straight rectangular fin is analysed and optimized using the two-dimensional separation of variables method. The optimum heat loss is presented as a function of bottom to top Biot number ratio, fin base length and top Biot number. Decreasing rate of the optimum fin length with the increase of the fin base length is listed. The optimum fin tip length is shown as a function of bottom to top Biot number ratio, fin base length and tip to top Biot number ratio. One of the results shows that the optimum heat loss and the actual optimum fin length decrease while the optimum fin tip length increases as the fin base length increases.

  • The inverse Weibull distribution (IWD) is the complementary Weibull distribution and plays an important role in many application areas. In Bayesian analysis, Soland's method can be considered to avoid computational complexities. One limitation of this approach is that parameters of interest are restricted to a finite number of values. This paper introduce nonparametric Bayesian estimator in the context of record statistics values from the exponentiated inverse Weibull distribution (EIWD). In stead of Soland's conjugate piror, stick-breaking prior is considered and the corresponding Bayesian estimators under the squared error loss function (quadratic loss) and LINEX loss function are obtained and compared with other estimators. The results may be of interest especially when only record values are stored.
