  • Many studies analyzing local newspapers' crisis overlooked what a dominant determinant was. Local Newspaper promotion policy might not be effective due to lack of such studies. This study divided main determinants into four; centralization of administrative power, potential advertising market, potential subscribers market, and competition within local newspapers. The results regressing above four determinants on local news portion showed that only two determinants - potential advertising market and competition within local newspapers are statistically significant but the direction is opposite; potential ads market is negative but competition is positive. It can be understood that the market with enough ads market for survival of local newspapers drives them to compete national newspapers by lowering local news.

Finally, local newspapers in the area not related with the site of an International Science-business belt did not even deal with such an articles. These results show that to win large-scale national projects such as PIMFI facilities, local governments have been too much competitive and connected to a conflict.

Just after the May 16th coup Military Government enforced the press merger and abolition and in 1962 announced the direction of the media policy and its implementation standards. These standards had a serious impact on local newspapers. It had resulted in weakening the reporting activities and aggravating the financial difficulties of the local newspapers. The media policy in 1971, which was in the form of self-purification resolutions of media corporations limited the dissemination and weakened the activities of local newspapers. By these measures the centralizing to Seoul of the media had to be deepened. The industrialization policy promoted by the Third Republic exacerbated this centralizing process.

  • This study set out to investigate the reality of local press and changes to the occupational identity of reporters through the job mobility of reporters at local newspapers. The study examined what reasons the reporters had when they retired from one of three paper newspapers in Daejeon, where they moved to, and how their career mobility was. Some of them remained in the field of journalism including paper newspapers of the same kind and Internet newspapers, and others moved to various areas including politics, administration, academy, economy, and culture and art. The biggest number of them said they left their old paper newspapers because of poor wages and welfare benefits and absence of future visions. Their decision of leaving their old paper newspapers was also influenced by restructuring, restrictions to coverage and reporting, and great workload. Before the IMF foreign currency crisis in 1997, the press labor market was a typical internal labor market with the practitioners joining a newspaper in open recruitment and climbing up the promotion ladder from a common reporter through Deputy Head and Head of a department to Director of a bureau. The emergence of new media and the financial difficulties of newspaper corporations were currently making the internal labor market worse. Reporters made active use of social capital such as regionalism, alumni ties, and news beats rather than changing jobs by increasing their professionalism through self-development, thus causing side effects including the weakened supervision and criticism functions of local newspapers and damaging their occupational identity as reporters.

  • Social issues are important factors that decide government policy and newspapers are critical channels that reflect them. Analysing news articles can contribute to understanding social issues, but it is very difficult to analyse the unstructured large volumes of news data manually. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the different views among stakeholders of a specific social issue by using text analysis, word cloud analysis and associative analysis methods, which systematically transform unstructured news data into structured one. We analyzed a total of 115 news articles and a total of 6,772 comments, collected from the selected newspapers (Chosun-Il-bo, Joongang-Il-bo, Donga-Il-bo, Maeil Newspaper, Busan-Il-bo) for two weeks. We found that there are significant differences in tone between newspapers. While nation-wide daily newspapers focus on political relations with local areas, local daily newspapers tend to write articles to represent local governments' interests.
