Human joint motion can be kinematically described in three planes, typically the frontal, sagittal, and transverse, and related to experimentally measured data. The selection of reference systems is a prerequisite for accurate kinematic analysis and resulting development of the equations of motion. Moreover, the development of analysis techniques for the minimization of errors, due to skin movement or body deformation, during experiments involving human locomotion is a critically important step, without which accurate results in this type of experiment are an impossibility. The traditional kinematic analysis method is the Angular-based method (ABM), which utilizes the Euler angle or the Bryant angle. However, this analysis method tends to increase cumulative errors due to skin movement. Therefore, the objective of this study was to propose a new kinematic analysis method, Position-based method (PBM), which directly applies position displacement data to represent locomotion. The PBM presented here was designed to minimize cumulative errors via considerations of angle changes and translational motion between markers occurring due to skin movements. In order to verify the efficacy and accuracy of the developed PBM, the mean value of joint dislocation at the knee during one gait cycle and the pattern of three dimensional translation motion of the tibiofemoral joint at the knee, in both flexion and extension, were accessed via ABM and via new method, PBM, with a Local Reference system (LRS) and Segmental Reference system (SRS), and then the data were compared between the two techniques. Our results indicate that the proposed PBM resulted in improved accuracy in terms of motion analysis, as compared to ABM, with the LRS and SRS.
This paper presents a centralized control algorithm for power system performance in the Korean power system using Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) devices. The algorithm is applied to the Korean power system throughout the metropolitan area in order to alleviate inherent stability problems, especially concerns with voltage stability. Generally, control strategies are divided into local and centralized control. This paper is concerned with a centralized control strategy in terms of the global system. In this research, input data of the proposed algorithm and network data are obtained from the SCADA/EMS system. Using the full system model, the centralized controller monitors the system condition and decides the operating point according to the control objectives that are, in turn, dependent on system conditions. To overcome voltage collapse problems, load-shedding is currently applied in the Korean power system. In this study, the application of the coordination between FACTS and switch capacitor (SC) can restore the solvability without load shedding or guarantee the FV margin when the margin is insufficient. Optimal Power Flow (OPF) algorithm, for which the objective function is loss minimization, is used in a stable case. The results illustrate examples of the proposed algorithm using SCADA/EMS data of the Korean power system in 2007.
Active contour models have been extensively used to segment, match, and track objects of interest in computer vision and image processing applications, particularly to locate object boundaries. With conventional methods an object boundary can be extracted by controlling the internal energy and external energy based on energy minimization. However, this still leaves a number of problems, such as initialization and poor convergence in concave regions. In particular, a contour is unable to enter a concave region based on the stretching and bending characteristic of the internal energy. Therefore, this study proposes a method that controls the internal energy by moving the local perpendicular bisector point of each control point on the contour, and determines the object boundary by minimizing the energy relative to the external energy. Convergence at a concave region can then be effectively implemented as regards the feature of interest using the internal energy, plus several objects can be detected using a multi-detection method based on the initial contour. The proposed method is compared with other conventional methods through objective validation and subjective consideration. As a result, it is anticipated that the proposed method can be efficiently applied to the detection of the pulmonary parenchyma region in medical images.

For stability analysis of the lumbar spine, the hypothesis presented is that the disc has stress sensors driving feedback mechanism, which could react to the imposed loads by adjusting the contraction of the muscles. Fusion in the motion segment of the lumbar spinal column is believed to alter the stability of the spinal column. To identify this effect finite element (FE) models combined with optimization technique was applied and quantify the role of each muscle and reaction forces in the spinal column with respect to the fusion level. The musculoskeletal FE model was consisted with detailed whole lumbar spine, pelvis, sacrum, coccyx and simplified trunk model. Vertebral body and pelvis were modeled as a rigid body and the rib cage was constructed with rigid truss element for the computational efficiency. Spinal fusion model was applied to L3-L4, L4-L5, L5-S1 (single level) and L3-L5 (two levels) segments. Muscle architecture with 46 local muscles was used as acting directions. Minimization of the nucleus pressure deviation and annulus fiber average axial stress deviation was selected for cost function. As a result, spinal fusion produced reaction changes at each motion segment as well as contribution of each muscle. Longissimus thoracis and psoas major muscle showed dramatic changes for the cases of L5-S1 and L3-L5 level fusion. Muscle force change at each muscle also generated relatively high nucleus pressure not only at the adjacent level but at another level, which can explain disc degeneration pattern observed in clinical study.

Generally, truss design has been determined by the designer's experience and intuition. But if we perform the most economical structural design we must consider not only cross-sections of members but also configurations(howe, warren and pratt types etc.) of single truss as the number of panel and truss height. The purpose of this study is to develope automated optimum design techniques for steel truss structures considering cross-sections of members and shape of trusses simultaneously. As the results, it could be possible to find easily the optimum solutions subject to design conditions at the preliminary structural design stage of the steel truss structures. In this study, the objective function is expressed as the whole member weight of trusses, and the applied constraints are as stresses, slenderness ratio, local buckling, deflection, member cross-sectional dimensions and truss height etc. The automated optimum design algorithm of this study is divided into three-level procedures. The first level on member cross-sectional optimization is performed by the sequential unconstrained minimization technique(SUMT) using dynamic programming method. And the second level about truss height optimization is applied for obtaining the optimum truss height by three-equal interval search method. The last level of optimization is applied for obtaining the optimum panel number of truss by integer programming method. The algorithm of multi-level optimization programming technique proposed in this study is more helpful for the economical design of plane trusses as well as space trusses.

In this paper, we propose a license plate detection method with improved Adaboost learning and MCT (Modified Census Transform). The MCT represents the local structure patterns as integer numbered feature values which has robustness to illumination change and memory efficiency. However, since these integer values are discrete, a lookup table is needed to design a weak classifier for Adaboost learning. Some previous research efforts have focused on minimization of exponential criterion for Adaboost optimization. In this paper, a method that uses MCT and improved Adaboost learning based on Newton's optimization to exponential criterion is proposed for license plate detection. Experimental results on license patch images and field images demonstrate that the proposed method yields higher performance of detection rates with low false positives than the conventional method using the original Adaboost learning.

In this paper, we present the design procedure of BPF(Band Pass Filter) for the suppression of LO(Local Oscillator) harmonics. The required suppression at given harmonics is the key issues in such a filter design, while the bandwidth and the suppression of the unwanted signals are more important in the conventional RF filter design. In LO filter design the bandwidth is used for the minimization of the insertion loss for the desired signal. In addition, we propose the novel tuning procedure based on Momentum to consider the unknown parasitic effects, which usually are not included in the circuit design step and results in undesirable and frustrating tuning after fabrication.

In this paper, we investigate the impact of hardware impairments (HWIs) on the performance of a downlink massive MIMO system. We consider a single-cell system with maximum ratio transmission (MRT) as precoding scheme, and with all the HWIs characteristics such as phase noise, distortion noise, and amplified thermal noise. Based on the system model, we derive closed-form expressions for a typical user data rate under two scenarios: when a common local oscillator (CLO) is used at the base station and when separated oscillators (SLOs) are used. We also derive closed-form expressions for the downlink transmit power required for some desired per-user data rate under each scenario. Compared to the conventional system with ideal transceiver hardware, our results show that impairments of hardware make a finite upper limit on the user's downlink channel capacity; and as the number of base station antennas grows large, it is only the hardware impairments at the users that mainly limit the capacity. Our results also show that SLOs configuration provides higher data rate than CLO at the price of higher power consumption. An approach to minimize the effect of the hardware impairments on the system performance is also proposed in the paper. In our approach, we show that by reducing the cell size, the effect of accumulated phase noise during channel estimation time is minimized and hence the user capacity is increased, and the downlink transmit power is decreased.
In this study, a hybrid-type of day fog detection algorithm (DFDA) was developed based on the optical and textural characteristics of fog top, using the Himawari-8 /Advanced Himawari Imager data. Supplementary data, such as temperatures of numerical weather prediction model and sea surface temperatures of operational sea surface temperature and sea ice analysis, were used for fog detection. And 10 minutes data from visibility meter from the Korea Meteorological Administration were used for a quantitative verification of the fog detection results. Normalized albedo of fog top was utilized to distinguish between fog and other objects such as clouds, land, and oceans. The normalized local standard deviation of the fog surface and temperature difference between fog top and air temperature were also assessed to separate the fog from low cloud. Initial threshold values (ITVs) for the fog detection elements were selected using hat-shaped threshold values through frequency distribution analysis of fog cases. And the ITVs were optimized through the iteration method in terms of maximization of POD and minimization of FAR. The visual inspection and a quantitative verification using a visibility meter showed that the DFDA successfully detected a wide range of fog. The quantitative verification in both training and verification cases, the average POD (FAR) was 0.75 (0.41) and 0.74 (0.46), respectively. However, sophistication of the threshold values of the detection elements, as well as utilization of other channel data are necessary as the fog detection levels vary for different fog cases(POD: 0.65-0.87, FAR: 0.30-0.53).

We propose a two-tier cooperative computing system comprised of a mobile device and an edge server for partial offloading of multi-branch structures in Fog/Edge Computing environments in this paper. The proposed system includes an algorithm for splitting up application service processing by using reconstructive linearization techniques for multi-branch structures, as well as an optimal collaboration algorithm based on partial offloading between mobile device and edge server. Furthermore, we formulate computation offloading and CNN layer scheduling as latency minimization problems and simulate the effectiveness of the proposed system. As a result of the experiment, the proposed algorithm is suitable for both DAG and chain topology, adapts well to different network conditions, and provides efficient task processing strategies and processing time when compared to local or edge-only executions. Furthermore, the proposed system can be used to conduct research on the optimization of the model for the optimal execution of application services on mobile devices and the efficient distribution of edge resource workloads.
