Microstructure and CTOD (crack tip opening displacement) of Deposit Weld Metal in 30 mm Thick Plate

  • The microstructure and crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) of deposit weld metal were investigated for a 30 mm- thick plate welded with flux cored arc welding (FCAW) and submerged arc welding (SAW) processes. The CTOD test was carried out both as welded condition and as stress-relieved specimen by local compression. The crack growth rates in FCAW were faster than those in a SAW, and the acicular ferrite content by the SAW process was increased relatively more than that by the FCAW process. The fatigue crack growth rate in a welded specimen was faster than that in locally compressed specimen. The CTOD value of locally compressed specimens was lower than that of as welded specimen. Furthermore, the CTOD value tested with the SAW process was higher than that tested with the FCAW process.

  • The CSG(Cemented Sand and Gravel) method is construction technique using as raw materials earth and gravel generated from a local construction site, mixing them with cement and rolling with vibration rollers. Recently, The use of this method for cofferdam and large dam is gradually increasing in Japan. The purpose of an CSG mix design is to develop project specific properties to meet the structure design requirements. But uniform mix design of CSG method has not yet been established. The experience of practitioners from the geotechnical and concrete disciplines has given rise to two genernal approaches to mix design for CSG. This paper reports the concept of how to set the mix design according to modified Proctor compaction test process and the test results on properties such as compaction, compressive strength and modulus of elasticity that obtained by unconfined compression test.

  • The design and buckling behavior of earth retaining system supported by high strength steel pipe and PHC pile under compression is presented in this study. Buckling analysis of various strut system was investigated according to the strut total length(30m, 60m, 90m), three types of built-up columns and connection condition. Buckling loads calculated by F.E analysis was compared with the theoretical solution corresponding to diagonal buckling mode, local and global buckling mode of main strut. The design of the built-up column struts are performed based on design guide for high strength steel pipes and P-M diagram for built-up column with two PHC pile section.

A Retained Polyethylene Catheter Fragment in Superior Vena Cava - A case report- (상대정맥내 폴리에틸렌관 잔존물 치험 1례)

  • This represents a case report of the retained polyethylene catheter fragment in superior vena cava. A 39 year old male was admitted to this Korea University Hospital a short time after compression wound on abdomen with heavy cement material in emergency room, a polyethylene catheter was introduced into the right subclavian vein through a needle. But when the polyethylene catheter was attempted to withdraw the catheter was severed by the beveled tip of the needle. Later that day, chest X-ray disclosed the presence of the fragment extending from right subclavian vein to the superior vena cava. {Fig. 1 and Fig. 2]. Local exploration by way of an infraclavicular incision was unsuccessful in locating the catheter fragment. Another attempt was then made remove the catheter by means a biotome, which is originally a device for the biopsy of the myocardium, introduced through the right great saphenous vein. This procedure, though well tolerated by the patient, was in vain. After 11 days later, during that time he was taken a laparotomy with drain, another operation for removal of retained catheter fragment was performed through median sternotomy. After exposure of the right subclavian vein, innominate vein, and superior vena cava, an incision 1 cm in |length was made directly over the palpated catheter. The catheter immediately was picked upward and removed. The length of the catheter was approximately 8 cm. [Fig 3 ] There was no evidence of thromboembolism from the catheter or other complications. The patient made an uneventful recovery, and was discharged asymptomatic on the 9th postoperative day.

Effect of dynamic absorber on the nonlinear vibration of SFG cylindrical shell

  • In this paper, a numerical method is utilized to study the effect of a new vibration absorber on vibration response of the stiffened functionally graded (SFG) cylindrical shell under a couple of axial and transverse compressions. The material composition of the stiffeners and shell is continuously changed through the thickness. The vibration absorber consists of a mass-spring-damper system which is connected to the ground utilizing a linear local damper. To simplify, the spring element of the vibration absorber is called global potential. The von Kármán strain-displacement kinematic nonlinearity is employed in the constitutive laws of the shell and stiffeners. To consider the stiffeners in the model, the smeared stiffener technique is used. After obtaining the governing equations, the Galerkin method is applied to discretize the nonlinear dynamic equation of system. In order to find the nonlinear vibration responses, the fourth order Runge-Kutta method is utilized. The influence of the stiffeners, the dynamic absorber parameters on the vibration behavior of the SFG cylindrical shell is investigated. Also, the influences of material parameters of the system on the vibration response are examined.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of the openings on the structural behavior of SC walls. The test parameters were with or without the reinforcing of openings and sleeve thickness. The common failure showed that the crack in the concrete progressed with the plate's local buckling between the shear connectors. The failure of the openings showed that the vertical wall of the sleeve buckled toward the opening inside. The plate buckling load showed a similar value with or without the sleeve of the opening, respectively. However, the maximum compressive strength of the specimen without the opening was higher than that of specimen with the opening.

  • In case of nonlinear analysis for reinforced concrete structure, the characteristics of the failure, which are depend on loading conditions, such as tension splitting, compression crushing and shear distortion should be considered. On the analytical evaluation for the failure behavior of these, the finite element techniques is the most widely used. After the maximum load, however, an analytical results by finite element technique are depending on the size of the element. In this study, integral nonlocal model which is one of those study for overcoming the element sensitivity and dependancy, used for the failure analysis of box culvert specimen. Comparing on the experimental and analytical results, validity and reliability of integral nonlocal model are investigate.

Study on Evaporating Heat Transfer of HCs Refrigerants by Changing of Tube Diameter (관경별 탄화수소계 냉매의 증발 열전달에 관한 특성평가)

  • The experimental apparatus has been set-up as a conventional vapor compression type heat pump system. The test section is a horizontal double pipe heat exchanger. A tube diameter of 12.70 mm, 9.52 mm, 6.35 mm with 1.78 mm,1.52 mm,1.4 mm wall thickness each is used for this investigation. The local evaporating heat transfer coefficients of hydrocarbon refrigerants were superior to that of R-22. and the maximum increasing rate of heat transfer coefficient was found in R-1270. The average evaporating heat transfer coefficient increased with the increase of the mass velocity and it showed the higher values in hydrocarbon refrigerants than R-22. The highest evaporating heat transfer coefficient of all refrigerants was shown in a tube diameter of 6.35 mm with same mass flux.

  • The purpose of present study is to explore the mechanical behavior of anchorage zones in prestressed concrete members with single and closely-spaced multiple tendon anchorages. The cracking loads and local stress distributions at these anchorage zones are studied. To this end, a series of experiments have been conducted. From this study, it is found that the failure of anchorage zones of the closely-spaced multiple tendon members is initiated by cracking along the tendon path and that the tensile stresses arising in the vicinity of anchorage zone of the first tendon are reduced due to additional compression of the second tendon. This results in the increase of cracking capacity of the member. The effects of multiple tendons are presented in the form of strain distribution and cracking load comparisons.

Open carpal release using local anesthesia without a tourniquet: Does bleeding tendency affect the outcome?

  • Background The aim of this study was to analyze the clinical results of minimal single palmar-incision carpal tunnel release without a tourniquet. Methods We reviewed the medical records of 75 patients (90 cases of carpal tunnel syndrome) who underwent minimal single-palmar incision carpal tunnel release without a tourniquet from June 2010 to January 2018. Ten patients had a bleeding tendency. We compared the preoperative and postoperative Boston Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Questionnaire (BCTQ) scores. We also analyzed outcomes and complications according to the presence of a bleeding tendency. Results In all cases, there was a complete disappearance or marked improvement in symptoms within 6 months, with no recurrence. The postoperative BCTQ score showed a significant improvement compared to the preoperative score, and no statistically significant difference in BCTQ scores was detected according to the presence of a bleeding tendency. Conclusions Carpal tunnel release without a tourniquet using a minimal single palmar incision is effective and reliable. This technique prevents unnecessary pain associated with the tourniquet and is especially helpful in patients with a bleeding tendency or those treated with hemodialysis.
