  • Among welded structure bogies in use for high speed freight car, a part of bogies manufactured in 1999 and 2000 have found problems that crack occurs in its end beam. In case of a freight car the difference of weight between empty and loading conditions are worse than in case of a passenger car. Moreover its brake system is tread brake without second suspension system. Cracks of end beam is supposed to be due to loading by brake system rather than vertical loading by freight. These cracks can make brake system useless and may be a cause of derailment in the worst case. In this study, we have proposed a simple torsion-free brake shoe holder hanger to remove torsion of hanger bracket which was supposed to be one of causes of cracks and performed finite element analyses. Also static load test was applied in torsion free brake shoe holder.

  • The weight reduction of carbody stl1lctures is of great concern in developing high speed tilting train for the normal operation of tilting system. The use of composite materials for the carbody structures has many advantages due to their excellent material propel1ies. In this paper, finite element analysis was conducted to verify the safety of the composite structures of Tilting Train eXpress(TTX). A train prototype with carbon/epoxy composite carbody was manufactured to perform static loading tests according to JIS E 7105. The loading tests were simulated by FE analysis to compare with the test results. To obtain more accurate and detailed result of stress distribution in local region of carbody, the submodeling approach was used. The submodeling analysis results showed the high levels of stress concentration occured on window frame part of TTX as the loading test results did.

  • The plastic collapse loads and their locations are predicted for a class of tapered, initially curved, and transversely corrugated cantilevered beams subjected to static tip loading. Results of both closed form and finite element solutions for several rigid perfectly plastic and elastic perfectly plastic beam models are evaluated. The governing equations are cast in nondimensional form for efficient studies of collapse load as it varies with beam geometry and the angle of the tip load. Static experiments for laboratory-scale configurations whose taper flared toward the tip, complemented the theory in that collapse occurred at points about 40% of the beams length from the fixed end. Experiments for low speed impact loading of these configurations showed that collapse occurred further from the fixed end, between the 61% and 71% points. The results may be applied to the design of safer highway guardrail terminal systems that collapse by design under vehicle impact.

  • Stress analysis of bogie frame by using the finite element method has been performed for the various loading conditions according to the UIC (International Union of Railways) Code 615-4. Multiaxial fatigue damage models such as signed von Mises method and typical critical plane theories were reviewed, and multiaxial fatigue analysis program (MUFAP) has been developed. Fatigue analysis of bogie frame under multiaxial loading was performed by using MUFAP and finite element analysis results. The procedure developed in this study is considered to be useful for the life prediction in preliminary design stage of railway components under multiaxial loading conditions. 3-dimensional surface modeling, mesh generation and finite element analysis were performed by Pro-Engineer, MSC/PATRAN and MSC/NASTRAN, respectively, which were installed in engineering workstation.

  • In this paper we present a linear discrete bit-loading algorithm that maximizes the transmit bit rate using the channel informations to optimize the performance of the very high-speed digital subscriber line(VDSL) system. It will be useful under the constraint of a maximum transmit power for each user. When the level of crosstalk is high, the power allocation of a user changes the noise experienced by the other users in the same binder. In this case, the performance of DSL modems can be improved by jointly considering the bit and power allocation of all users.

  • A series of tests in an ice tank was carried out using a model-scale ship to investigate the ice loading process. The ship model Uikku was mounted on a rigid carriage and towed through a level ice field in the ice tank of the Marine Technology Group at Aalto University. The carriage speed and ice thickness were varied. In this paper, ice loading process was described and the corresponding ice forces on the horizontal plane were analysed. A new method is proposed to decompose different ice force components from the total ice forces measured in the model tests. This analysis method is beneficial to understanding contributions of each force component and modelling of ice loading on hulls. The analysed experimental results could be used for comparison with further numerical simulations.

  • In the retaining wall design process, track and train loads are usually considered as uniform surcharge loads and strip loads. In this paper, the lateral(horizontal) earth pressure on retaining structures caused by track and train load are calculated using the Boussinesq solution. And also total horizontal force per unit length and the location of the resultant force were estimated with the changes of loading locations and widths of the loadings. The maximum horizontal earth pressure and the location of it for high-speed train load were 11.83kPa and 1.7m at the loading condition 2m away from retaining walls.

  • This paper is to investigate the influence of driving patterns of slow and high speed vehicles on the performance of continuously regenerating diesel particulate filter(DPF) system matched with operating conditions in field application. The DPF performance test for field application was carried out for two identical DPFs installed to slow and high speed vehicles. A slow speed vehicle was selected among local buses which have driving patterns to repeat running and stop frequently, while a high speed vehicle was prepared to have long route of high speed over 60km/h like inter-city buses. In this test, the regeneration performance on the DPF of slow speed vehicle deteriorated because of high soot load index(SLI) in spite of same balance point temperature(BPT) distribution for high speed vehicle. The DPF of slow speed vehicle melted in the end because the rapid increase of back pressure caused high temperature over $1200^{\circ}C$ in the ceramic wall of DPF. The PM components like ash collected to the filter in the DPF were analyzed in order to investigate the cause of the defect and provide an operation performance of DPF system. In the result of the analysis, high levels of lubrication oil ash(Ca, Mg, P, Zn) were detected.
