The objective of this paper is to investigate into bending and failure characteristics of ISB panel with dimple shapes as inner structures. Through three-points bending test, the force-displacement curve and the failure shape are obtained to examine the deformation pattern, characteristic data including maximum load and displacement at the maximum load and failure pattern for the ISB panel. In addition, the influence of design parameters for ISB panel on the bending stiffness and failure mode has been found. From the results of the experiments, it has been shown that bending and failure characteristics of the ISB panel can be controlled by the ratio of radius and the direction of the material.

The vibration characteristics of post-buckled laminated composite doubly curved shells are investigated. The finite element method is used for the analysis of post-buckling and free vibration of post-buckled laminated shells. The geometric non-linear finite element model includes the general non-linear terms in the strain-displacement relationships. The shell geometry used in the present formulation is derived using an orthogonal curvilinear coordinate system. Based on the principle of virtual work the non-linear finite element equations are derived. Arc-length method is implemented to capture the load-displacement equilibrium curve. The vibration characteristics of post-buckled shell are performed using tangent stiffness obtained from the converged deflection. The code is first validated and then employed to generate numerical results. Parametric studies are performed to analyze the snapping and vibration characteristics. The relationship between loads and fundamental frequencies and between loads and the corresponding displacements are determined for various parameters such as thickness ratio and shallowness.
In this study, under large scale yielding conditions crack propagation is found to governed by parameters based on the J-integral or on the crack opening displacement. But initiation of crack propagation of ductile material seems to be controlled by just on parameter that is the strain. The relationship between the critical value of J-integral and the local fracture strain in uniaxial tensile test in the region of maximum reduction in area. Therefore, the fundamental theorectical equation by the proposed elastic-plastic fracture toughness and the local fracture strain has a merit. in comparison with the ASTM method, which can measure by using the load-displacement curve and the specimens in tenslie test.
Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have attracted an increasing attention due to their superior mechanical properties and potential application in industries. The strength of CNT has been predicted or calculated through several simulation techniques but actual experiments on stress-strain behavior are rare due to its dimensional limit, nanoscale positioning/manipulation, and instrumental resolution. We have attempted to observe straining responses of a multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT) with different growth methods by performing an in-situ tensile testing in a scanning electron microscope. Linear deformation and fracture behaviors of MWNT were successfully observed and its force-displacement curve was also measured from the bending stiffness and displacement of the force sensor and manipulator. We also obtained different tensile load of carbon nanotube with different growth methods.

It is well known in the fracture mechanics community that the fracture toughness of brittle materials, such as ceramics, can be improved improves significantly when fibers are added into the material. This is because in presence of fibers the cracks cannot propagate as freely as it can in absence of them. Fibers bridge the gap between two adjacent surfaces of the crack and reduce the crack tip opening displacement, thus make it harder to propagate. Several investigators have experimentally studied how the length, diameter and volume fraction of fibers affect the fracture toughness of chopped strand reinforced matrix composite materials. In this paper, matrix used ALS, Arizona Lunar Simulant, types of fiber used carbon steels and stainless steels. To analyze quantitatively fiber reinforced ALS composites, experimental and analytical methods was progressed. Load-displacement curve is used to experimental method, and FEM analysis program using ABAQUS is used analytical method.
Surface damage accumulation of alumina ceramics under the cyclic stress state was analyzed. The alternating stress state in repeat pass sliding contact was simulated by a synchronized biaxial (normal and tangential) repeated indentation technique. Wear debris formation mechanism through damage accumulation and fatigue grain failure in both alumina ceramic balls and flat disks was confirmed, and the contact induced surface degradation due to fatigue cracking accumulation was quantified by measuring vertical contact displacement. Variation of structural compliance (slope of load-displacement curve) of two contacting bodies was expressed as a variation of the apparent elastic property, called pseudo-elastic constant, of the contact system.
