The driven pile has environmental problems such as vibration and noise. Especially, if the site consists of gravel, cobble and weather rock, the driven pile can not be applied. Therefore, the application of the drilled shafts is increasing in Korea. However, the bearing capacity values by the suggested theoretical formulas are generally considered too conservative. In this paper, static load tests for the rock socketed drilled shaft at Gwangandaero and Suyeong3hogyo are performed and in order to estimate the side friction of the shaft, strain gauges are applied. The bearing capacities from the field test data and the bearing capacity values by the theoretical formula are compared. Even the static load tests didn't reach to the ultimate bearing capacity condition, and all the measured bearing capacity values were higher than those by the theoretical formulas. The field data also showed that the major bearing capacities were not due to end bearings but side friction resistances. Based on the above results, several suggestions are proposed for the drilled shaft design.

Stone column is a soil improvement method and can be applicable for loose sand or weak cohesive soil. Since the lack of sand in Korea, stone column seems one of the most adaptable approach for poor ground as a soil improvement method. However, this method was not studied for practical application. In this paper, the most effective design parameters for the being capacity of stone column were studied. The parametric study of major design factors for single stone column was carried out under the bulging and general shear failure condition, respectively. Especially, a test result of single stone column by static load was compared with the bearing capacity values of suggested formulas. The analysis result showed that the ultimate bearing capacity by the formula was much less than the measured value by the static load test. Especially, the result of the parametric study under general shear failure condition showed that the bearing capacity has apparent difference between each suggested formulas with the variation of the major design parameters. Therefore, the result of this study can be a suggestion which is applicable for the field test and the future research.

In this study, two design examples of drilled shafts on soft ground in Ho-Chi-Minh City, Vietnam are introduced. One is for a 27-story apartment and the other is for a Arch bridge over Saigon river. Unlikely the normal cases in Korea, all of the bored pile foundations are supposed to be placed on soil layers. Therefore, skin friction between pile and ground is the most crucial design parameter. Three methods using SPT N value of sandy soil -Korean Road Bridge Code(1996), Reese and Wright (1977), and O'Neill and Reese (1988)- were adopted to obtain an ultimate axial bearing capacity. In order to verify the calculated bearing capacity, 3 sets of static load test and a Osterberg Cell test were performed at an apartment site and a bridge site respectively. LRFD (Load Resistance Factored Design) method was compared with ASD (Allowable Stress Design) method. On application of ASD method, safety factor for skin friction was adopted as 2 or 3 while safety factor for end bearing was 3. The design bearing capacities from ASD method matched well with those from LRFD method when safety factor for skin friction was adopted as 2.
As the use of drilled shafts for foundation of a large size structure increases, the evaluation of the reliable bearing capacity of the pile has become important. The purpose of this study is to verify the reliability of bearing capacity equations for drilled shafts socketed in weathered rock by comparing the bearing capacity values from static load tests with values from bearing capacity equations. In this study, twelve data from static load test were selected from four field sites, and the data of load test and the properties of weathered rock were analyzed. Three methods widely used in practice were selected for analysis, namely the AASHTO method (1996), Carter & Kulhawy method (1988), and FHWA method (1999). The comparison of the bearing capacity values from the bearing capacity equations to those obtained from load tests showed that the Carter & Kulhawy method (1988) was the most reliable in giving conservative design values and smaller COV (Coefficient Of Variation).

A pile is compressed with settlements when loading and bearing capacity is altered along relative displacement of pile/soil on settlement and compression. Settlements of pile displaying limit skin friction is different from displaying tip resistance. Therefore, it is an error in traditional method that bearing capacity of pile is estimated from the sum of limit skin fraction and tip resistance. Accordingly, development of design method considering behavior of load-settlement is needed. In this study, we would like to establish the base for development of design method considering bearing capacity altering along displacement on settlement and compression. For this, we established system and substance of design method. And in order to establish relationship of load-settlement of pile on the type of soil, we analyzed and arranged existing database and pile loading test. On design method, settlement is assumed gradually on each capacity level being assumed gradually. Bearing capacity developing on the pile is obtained on each settlement level. Until the obtained bearing capacity will be equal to assumed capacity, this process is continued with increasing settlement. Load-settlement curve for soil classification is sketched in the process computing settlement on assumed capacity. This design method will be materialized by computation program.
The helical pile has become popular with some constructional advantages because relatively compact equipment is needed for installing helical piles. However, field loading tests for estimating the bearing capacity of helical piles have drawbacks that the required dead load should be as much as the operation load, and reaction piles or anchors are required. In this paper, the bi-directional load test without necessity of reaction piles and loading frames was applied to the helical pile, and the load-settlement curves of the helical piles were measured. The bi-directional load test was performed in two separate stages with the aid of a special hydraulic cylinder whose diameter is equal to that of the pile shaft. In the first stage, the hydraulic cylinder is assembled immediately above the bottom helix plate, and the end bearing capacity of the helical pile is measured. In the second stage, the hydraulic cylinder is assembled above the top helix plate, and the skin friction of the helical pile is measured. The pile loading-test program was carried out for the two different helical piles with the shaft diameter of 89 mm and 114 mm, respectively. However, the configuration of helix plates is identical with three helix plates of 450-, 350-, 200- mm diameter. Results of the bi-directional load test were verified by the conventional static pile loading test. As a result, the bearing capacity estimated by the bi-directional load test is in good agreement with the result of the conventional pile loading test.
Although the pile Load test provides various informations to predict the bearing capacity of a pile, it has a considerable difficulty of requiring a large amount of weight to enable the test pile to be loaded sufficiently until the yielding or ultimate load is obtained. Many graphical and mathematical methods have been attempted to estimate the bearing capacity from the result of a vertical load test without loading to failure. In the previous work an analytical method to estimate the failure load using the maxi mum curvature which was based on the Southwell's theory was presented by the author. The failure load, as proposed by Crowther, should be defined as the load at which the predefined that criteria are exceeded. The allowable loads by Davisson's method and DIN 4014 were compared with the loads of piles using the maximum curvature, and this paper proposed the allowable load in which the safety factor of the maximum curvature was 2.5. As a result of study, it was reasonable to conclude that the allowable load determined by the maximum curvature method could estimate the vertical bearing capacity from the pile load test without loading to failure.

Preliminary pile load tests for the design of large diameter drilled shaft were performed on two of reduced scale(D=1370mm) test piles. The maximum loads of 2350 tonf in each direction were applied using bi-directional hydraulic jacks(Osterberg Cell) at toe. Neither of the test piles yielded in terms of skin friction and end bearing. Comparisons of the test results with several methods that estimate pile capacity show that the method of Horvath and Kenney(1979) for skin friction and Zhang and Einstein(1998) for end bearing were most appropriate for the site. The test results were directly applied to pile design in case RQD of skin and toe was larger than that of the test pile. It is desirable, therefore, to consider not only unconfined compression strength but also rock mass properties(i.e. TCR, RQD) for skin friction and end bearing evaluation in the future.
This study presents an experimental investigation of the effects of surface roughness on gas foil thrust bearing (GFTB) performance. A high-speed motor with the maximum speed of 80 krpm rotates a thrust runner and a pneumatic cylinder applies static loads to the test GFTB. When the motor speed increases and reaches a specific speed at which a hydrodynamic film pressure generated within the gap between the thrust runner and test GFTB is enough to support the applied static load, the thrust runner lifts off from the test GFTB and the friction mechanism changes from the boundary lubrication to the hydrodynamic lubrication. The experiment shows a series of lift-off test and load-carrying capacity test for two thrust runners with different surface roughnesses. For a constant static load of 15 N, thrust runner A with its lower surface roughness exhibits a higher start-up torque but lower lift-off torque than thrust runner B with a higher surface roughness. The load capacity test at a rotor speed of 60 krpm reveals that runner A results in a higher maximum load capacity than runner B. Runner A also shows a lower drag torque, friction coefficient, and bearing temperature than runner B at constant static loads. The results imply that maintaining a consistent surface roughness for a thrust runner may improve its static GFTB performance.

A water-pump located in the cooling area of a car circulates cooling water. A particular bearing element, known as a water-pump bearing, installed in the rotating part carries the entire load. The failure of this water-pump bearing has a direct impact on the failure of the automobile engine, and so securing its reliability is crucial. Several researchers have examined the design principles of the water-pump bearing, but there are no reports on the life characteristic of the bearing yet. Herein, we report the construction of test equipment to reproduce the spalling of the roller contact, which is the main failure mode of the chosen water-pump bearing. We chose the radial load as an accelerated stress factor and validated the failure mode by monitoring the surface defects. We conducted the accelerated life test after determining the accelerated stress level through a combination of finite element analysis and a preliminary test. In the life tests, we used an accelerometer to perform failure diagnosis. In the last stage of this study, we present a statistical reliability analysis. Thus, we fully estimated the shape parameter of the water-pump bearing, accelerating level on the load , and the lifetime (MTTF and B10 life) under real use conditions, and finally proposed an interval estimation value considering the uncertainty of the estimated value.
