We had clarified the reactions of the rare earth oxides($RE_2O_3$) with lithium oxide produced in lithium reduction process of oxide fuels. Oxides of scandium, yttrium, praseodymium, neodymium, samarium, europium, gadolinium, ytterbium and lutetium reacted with lithium oxide in the higher concentration than the respective certain critical concentration of lithium oxide and formed complex oxides($LiREO_2$). The critical lithium oxide concentrations for the formation of complex oxides of scandium, yttrium, praseodymium, neodymium, samarium, europium, gadolinium, ytterbium and lutetium oxide were respectively 0.1 wt%, 1.9 wt%, 5.3 wt%, 5.0 wt%, 3.0 wt%, 3.9 wt% 2.9 wt%, 2.6 wt% and 0.3 wt%. Cerium and lanthanum oxide did not react with lithium oxide. These complex oxides obtained from experiments have limited solubility in lithium chloride at $650^{\circ}C$.
The electrolytic reduction of spent oxide fuel involves the liberation of oxygen in a molten LiCl electrolyte, which results in a chemically aggressive environment that is too corrosive for typical structural materials. It is essential to choose the optimum material for the process equipment handling molten salt. IN713LC is one of the candidate materials proposed for application in electrolytic reduction process. In this study, yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) top coat was applied to a surface of IN713LC with an aluminized metallic bond coat by an optimized plasma spray process, and were investigated the corrosion behavior at $675^{\circ}C$ for 216 hours in the molten salt $LiCl-Li_2O$ under an oxidizing atmosphere. The as-coated and tested specimens were examined by OM, SEM/EDS and XRD, respectively. The bare superalloy reveals obvious weight loss, and the corrosion layer formed on the surface of the bare superalloy was spalled due to the rapid scale growth and thermal stress. The top coatings showed a much better hot-corrosion resistance in the presence of $LiCl-Li_2O$ molten salt when compared to those of the uncoated superalloy and the aluminized bond coatings. These coatings have been found to be beneficial for increasing to the hot-corrosion resistance of the structural materials for handling high temperature lithium molten salts.

The effect of various lithium sources such as LiCl, LiOH, and Li-metal on the microstructure and electrochemical properties of granulated $SiO_x$ powders were investigated. Various lithium sources were metallurgically added for a passive pre-lithiation of $SiO_x$ to improve its low initial coulombic efficiency. In spite of using the same amount of Li in various sources, as well as the same process conditions, different lithium silicates were obtained. Moreover, irreversible phases were formed without reduction of $SiO_x$, which might be from additional oxygen incorporation during the process. Accordingly, there were no noticeable electrochemical enhancements. Nevertheless, the $Li_4SiO_4$ phase changes the initial electrochemical reaction, and consequently the relationship between the microstructure and electrochemical properties of metallurgically pre-lithiated $SiO_x$ could provide a guideline for the optimization of the performance of lithium ion batteries.

Electric vehicles are environmentally friendly because they emit no exhaust gas, unlike gasoline automobiles. However, since they are driven by the electric power from batteries, the distance they can travel based on a single charge depends on their energy density. Therefore, the lithium-ion battery having a high energy density is a good candidate for the batteries of electric vehicles. Since the electrode is an essential component that governs their efficiency, the electrode manufacturing process plays a vital role in the entire production process of lithium-ion batteries. In particular, the coating process is a critical step in the manufacturing of the electrode, which has a significant influence on its performance. In this paper, we propose an innovative process for improving the efficiency and productivity of the coating process in electrode manufacturing and describe the equipment design method and development results. Specifically, we propose a design procedure and development method in order to improve the core plate coating quality by 25%, using a technology capable of reducing the assembly margin due to its high output/high capacity and improving the product capacity quality and assembly process yield. Using this method, the battery life of the lithium-ion battery cell was improved. Compared with the existing coating process, the target loading level is maintained and dispersed to maintain the anode capacity (${\pm}0.4{\rightarrow}{\pm}0.3mg/cm^2r$ reduction).
Due to the rapid development of electricity, electronics, information communication, and biotechnology in recent years, studies are actively being conducted on nanopowders as it is required not only for high strengthening but also for high-function powder with electric, magnetic, and optical properties. Nonetheless, studies on nickel nanopowders are rare. In this study of the synthesis of nickel nanoparticles from $LiNiO_2$ (LNO), which is a cathode active material, we have synthesized the nanosized nickel powder by the liquid reduction process of $NiSO_4$ obtained through the leaching and purification of LNO. Moreover, we have studied the reduction reaction rate according to the temperature change of liquid phase reduction and the change of particle size as a function of NaOH addition amount using hydrazine monohydrate ($N_2H_4{\cdot}H_2O$) and NaOH.
This work was performed to study the characteristics of electrochemical intercalation reactions occurring at the interface between the organic electrolyte and tungsten trioxide thin film (thickness of $4000{\AA}$) prepared by e-beam evaporation method as cathodically coloring oxide with regard to the electrochromism by the intercalating reactions of the lithium cation in the 1M $LiClO_4/PC$ organic solution. The characteristics of electrochemical intercalation reactions were investigated by various DC electrochemical methods such as cathodic Tafel polarization test, multiple and the single sweep cyclic voltammetry and the coulomety titrations method. The surfaces of thin films were observed with the patterns of X ray diffraction after the coloring and bleaching reactions. In comparison with the previous results that $WO_3$ thin film intersely detached from the surface of electrode when the hydrogen cation was intercalated into $WO_3$ thin film in the o.1N $H_2SO_4$ aqueous solution, the intercalation reaction of lithium cation into $WO_3$ thin film in the 1M $LiClO_4/PC$ organic solution was shown that the stable bleaching and coloration was appeared within 1.0V of the applied overpotential. When the overpotential of electrochromic reaction for lithium cation in the 1M $LiClO_4/PC$ organic solution had been applied up to 1.5V, the accumulation phenomenon of lithium in amorphous $WO_3$ thin film layer occurred because the inserted lithium into amorphous $WO_3$ thin layer for coloring process was not fully removed from the thin layer to the electrolyte during bleaching process. It was found that there is a limitation of applied overpotential for coloring process by the reduction of the current densities of bleaching and coloration after few number of coloring and bleaching cycles.

The mass balance of the unit processes of the Advanced spent fuel Conditioning Process was calculated to obtain basic information. Based on this mass balance, the changes in decay heat and radioactivity of the spent fuel due to the metallization in the high temperature molten salt system were estimated. The decay heat and the radioactivity were calculated by using the ORIGEN2 computer code, and the result showed that the decay heat and the radioactivity of the metallized spent fuel ingot were $24.27\%\;and\;24.24\%$, respectively, compared to those of oxide spent fuel.

The electrolyte wetting phenomena in the electrode of lithium ion battery is studied numerically using a multiphase lattice Boltzmann method (LBM). When a porous electrode is compressed during roll-pressing process, the porosity and thickness of the compressed electrode are changed, which can affect its wettability. In this study, the change in electrolyte distribution and degree of saturation as a result of varying the compression ratio are investigated with two-dimensional LBM approach. We found that changes in the electrolyte transport path are caused by a reduction in through-plane pore size and result in a decrease in the wettability of the compressed electrode.

The mechanism of corrosion behavior has to be understood clearly to select an optimum material for handling molten salts to be used in the oxide reduction process of PWR spent fuel. In this study, the oxidation states of corrosion products on the surface of Inconel 600 and 800H as well as their chemical compositions and structural informations were determined by using XPS, ICP-AES, AAS, EPMA and XRD after the corrosion experiment with lithium molten salts at 75$0^{\circ}C$ for 25 hours. Nickel and oxygen were detected from the corrosion products on the surface of Inconel plates and chromium was found to be dissolved out into lithium molten salts leaving cracks on the surface. The corrosion products were identified as metal oxides such as Fe$_2$O$_3$, Cr$_2$O$_3$, NiO, NiFe$_2$O$_4$and MnO by using XPS and XRD.
Metalization yield of uranium oxide to uranium metal from lithium reduction process of spent pressurized water reactor (PWR) fuels was measured using thermogravimetric analyzer. A reduced metal produced in the process was divided into a solid and a powder part, and each metalization yield was measured. Metalization yield of the solid part was 90.7~95.9 wt%, and the powder being 77.8~71.5 wt% individually. Oxidation behaviour of the quartemary alloy was investigated to take data on the thermal oxidation stability necessary for the study on dry storage of the reduced metal. At $600{\sim}700^{\circ}C$, weight increments of alloy of Mo, Ru, Rh and Pd was 0.40~0.55 wt%. Phase change on the surface of the alloy was started at $750^{\circ}C$. In particular, Mo was rapidly oxidized and then the alloy lost 0.76~25.22 wt% in weight.
