  • Fluidized beds have been widely used in industrial applications, which in most of them, the operating fluid is non-Newtonian. In this study, the combination of the lattice Boltzmann method (LBM) and the smoothed profile method has been developed for non-Newtonian power-law fluids. The validation of the obtained model were investigated by experimental correlations. This model has been used for numerical studying of changing the operating fluid and geometrical parameters on the expansion behavior in liquid-solid beds with both Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids. Investigations were performed for seven different geometries, one Newtonian, and two non-Newtonian fluids. The power-law index was in the range of 0.8 to 1, and the results for the Newtonian fluidized beds show more porosity than the non-Newtonian ones. Furthermore, increasing the power-law index resulted in enhancing the bed porosity. On the other hand, bed porosity was decreased by increasing the initial bed height and the density of the solid particles. Finally, the porosity ratio in the bed was decreased by increasing the solid particle diameter.

  • The pressure measurement in the high-temperature liquid metal system, such as Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor(SFR), is important and yet it is very challenging due to its nature. The measuring pressure is relatively at low range and the applied temperature varies in wide range. Moreover, the pressure transfer material in impulse line needs to considered the high temperature condition. The conventional diaphragm-based approach cannot be used for it is impossible to remove the effect of thermal expansion. In this paper, the Fiber Bragg Grating(FBG) sensor-based pressure measuring concept is suggested that it is free of problems induced by the thermal expansion. To verify this concept, a prototype was fabricated and tested in an appropriate conditions. The uncertainty analysis result of the experiment is also included. The final result of this study clearly showed that the FBG-based pressure transmitter system is applicable to the extreme environment, such as SFR and any other high-temperature liquid metal system and the measurement uncertainty is within reasonable range.

  • In this study, to quantitatively evaluate the strength characteristics of the inflatable liquid used for the recovery of soft ground or partial settlement, the inflatable liquids were prepared by dividing the inflatable capacity and the strength characteristics were analyzed according to the conditions. The experimental group was divided into two groups: relatively high expansion group and low expansion group. The specimens were prepared by controlling the volume of 10 ~ 30% of the maximum expansion volume, and the strength of the specimens were evaluated. The compressive strength of the high expansion group and low expansion group was about 2.1 times.

  • An analytical method for the free vibration of a flexible rectangular plate in contact with water is developed by the Rayleigh.Ritz method. The plate clamped along the edges is partially contacted with water at both sides. It is assumed that the water bounded by rigid walls is incompressible and inviscid. The wet mode shape of the plate is assumed as a combination of the dry mode shapes of a clamped beam. The liquid motion is described by using the liquid displacement potential and determined by using the compatibility conditions along the liquid interface with the plate. Minimizing the Rayleigh quotient based on the energy conservation gives an eigenvalue problem. It is found that the theoretical results can predict excellently the fluid.coupled natural frequencies comparing with the finite element analysis result.

  • An experimental study on the spray characteristics of aerated-liquid jets discharged from effervescent injectors to a subsonic crossflow was conducted to investigate effects of a gas to liquid mass ratio (GLR) and a ratio of the orifice length to the diameter (L/d). The present effervescent injectors consist of a plain orifice injector and an aerator. To analyze breakup length and spray trajectory, instantaneous spray images were taken by a high speed camera. As the GLR increased, the spray penetration became higher under the same liquid mass flow rate and the breakup length became shorter due to the bubble expansion or the annular liquid film breakup. To predict the spray trajectory of two-phase flow jets into the crossflow, the homogeneous and the separated flow models were compared.

  • The effect of swirl on the flow characteristics in a sudden expansion tube was examined experimentally by using 3D PIV(particle image velocimetry) to capture the velocity profiles. The swirling flow of water through a sudden 1:2 axisymmetric expansion has previously been studied experimentally within a horizontal round tube. A kind of tangential slot is used as a swirl generator for swirling flow and a honey comb is used for without swirl flow. The work with the swirl and without swirl results are compared to each other at the same Reynolds number. Liquid crystal was employed to measure temperature profiles and heating coil used for heat transfer with and without swirl flow. And then the Nusselt number ratoes(Nu/Nudb) are calculated along the test section.

  • Effect of Li2O.4B2O frit on the microstructural and thermal expansion behaviour of $\beta$-spodumene ceramics was investigated. With 4.0~8.0 wt.% frit addition, sintering temperature range was enlarged and densification was enhanced through liquid phase sintering. As the amount of frit addition was increased, thermal expansion coefficient was increased to 1.72$\times$10-6$^{\circ}C$-1 of its highest value, which indicated that the increment of thermal expansion coefficient due to the second phase was constrained.

  • A cycle analysis was performed for 2-stage expansion Claude refrigerators by a numerical method. The refrigerators are under recent development such that the reciprocating expanders of Collins cycle are replaced by new turboexpanders. A computer simulation program was written to predict the coefficient of performance of the refrigerators for several input parameters. It was found out that there exist unique optimum values for the ratio of expanded mass through the turboexpanders to the total mass and for the intermediate pressure of the 2-stage expansion. The maximum coefficient of performance was about $5{\times}10^{-4}$ at the optimal operation.

  • Effect of Li2O.4B2O3 frit addition on microstructural and thermal expansion behaviour of the $\beta$-spodumene ceramics made from kaolinite was investigated. With 2.0~4.0 wt% frit addition, the densification by liquid phase sintering caused low water absorption below 3% and enhancement of beding strength. As the amount of frit addition was increased, thermal expansion coefficient was increased to large scale, but in 2 wt% frit addition, its thermal expansion coefficient was constrained to 1.92$\times$10-6$^{\circ}C$-1.

  • A coupled liquid-gas-solid three-phase model, linking two numerical codes (TOUGH2/EOS3 and $FLAC^{3D}$), was firstly established and validated by simulating an in-situ air flow test in Essen. Then the coupled model was employed to investigate responses of multiphase flow and soil skeleton deformation to compressed air or freshwater injection using the same simulation conditions in an aquifer of Tianjin, China. The simulation results show that with injecting pressurized fluids, the vertical effective stress in some area decreases owing to the pore pressure increasing, an expansion of soil skeleton appears, and land uplift occurs due to support actions from lower deformed soils. After fluids injection stops, soil deformation decreases overall due to injecting fluids dissipating. With the same applied pressure, changes in multiphase flow and geo-mechanical deformation caused by compressed air injection are relatively greater than those by freshwater injection. Furthermore, the expansion of soil skeleton induced by compressed air injection transfers upward and laterally continuously with time, while during and after freshwater injection, this expansion reaches rapidly a quasi-steady state. These differences induced by two fluids injection are mainly because air could spread upward and laterally easily for its lower density and phase state transition appears for compressed air injection.
