  • Experiments were carried out to establish an effective artificial drying method of Pacific saury (Cololabis seira) to kwamaegi. Raw fish containing 67% moisture were dried up to containing less than 40% moisture by drying for 15 days. The fish lost moisture more rapidly during first 3 days of natural drying than artificial drying. Total lipid content increased from 16.1% to 30.3 and 29.8% by 15 days of natural and artificial drying, respectively. Neutral lipid occupying 91.63% of total lipid increased to 92~94% during 15 days of drying, while content of phospholipid and glycolipid decreased slightly. The values of peroxide and thiobarbituric acid increased up to 6 days of drying and then did not change. Peroxide levels were lower in artifically dried fish than in naturally dried ones.

A Facile Synthesis of Discoidal Lipid Bilayer Nanostructure by Association of a Cationic Amphiphilic Polyelectrolyte

  • This study presents a facile way synthesizing disc-like lipid bilyaer nanostructures with a cationic amphiphilic polyelectrolyte. The cationic amphiphilic polyelectrolyte was in a form of partially quarternized copolymer and was synthesized with 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate and stearyl methacrylate. At some concentration ranges of the polymer, the addition of the polymer to lipid components during the preparation of bilayer nanostructures resulted in discs with a fairly high yield (~99%). The mechanism for the formation of the nanostructures was discussed based on the physical properties of these nanostructures and by comparing the nanostructures obtained with an anionic amphiphilic polyelectrolyte.

  • Different lifestyles have an impact on useful metabolic functions, causing disorders. Different lipids are involved in the metabolic functions that play various vital roles in the body, such as structural components, storage of energy, in signaling, as biomarkers, in energy metabolism, and as hormones. Inter-related disorders are caused when these functions are affected, like diabetes, cancer, infections, and inflammatory and neurodegenerative conditions in humans. During the Covid-19 period, there has been a lot of focus on the effects of metabolic disorders all over the world. Hence, this review collectively reports on research concerning metabolic disorders, mainly cardiovascular and diabetes mellitus. In addition, drug research in lipid metabolism disorders have also been considered. This review explores lipids, metabolism, lipid metabolism disorders, and drugs used for these disorders.

  • This experiment was designed to observe some influence on the serum components in rats by feeding basal diet (Protein contents: 20.0%; lipid contents: 3.5%) with soft water (Water, Carbonated cider, Cola and Fanta). Fourty male Albino rats were used as the experimental animals and the subjects were devided into four feeding group and each group was fed on the corresponding diet for six weeks. The contents of protein, lipid and cholesterol were determined in their serum. The obtained results are summarized as follows. 1) The protein contents in the serum was decreased by the feeding of the Carbonated cider, Cola and Fanta compared with Water experimental group. 2) The lipid contents in the serum was similar to each feeding experimental group. 3) The total cholesterol and ester form cholesterol in the serum were decreased by the feeding of the Carbonated cider compared with Water, but were similar to the feeding of the Cola and Fanta.

Effects of the Zizyphus jujuba Seed Extract on the Lipid Components in Hyperlipidemic Rats

  • The purpose of this study was designed to observe the effects of Zizyphus jujuba seed extract on the concentrations of the lipids and blood glucose in the S.D. rats fed the experimental diets for 4 weeks. Concentrations of total cholesterol, atherosclerotic index, LDL, LDL-cholesterol, free-cholesterol, cholesteryl ester, triglyceride (TG), phospholipid (PL) and blood glucose in serum were significantly higher in the cholesterol administration groups (group 2 (cholesterol+water), group 3 (cholesterol+Zizyphus jujuba seed extract)) than those in the control group (group 1, basal diet+water). But the concentrations of total cholesterol, atherosclerotic index, LDL, LDL-cholesterol, free-cholesterol, cholesteryl ester, TG, PL and blood glucose in serum ware remarkably lower in the group 3 than those in the group 2. In the ratio of HIDL-cholesterol concentration to total cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol concentration, Zizyphus jujuba seed extract administration group was higher percentage than in the group 2. The activities of aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine amino-transferase (ALT), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) in serum were rather lower in the Zizyphus jujuba seed extract administration group (group 3) than in the cholesterol diet group (group 2). From the above research, Zizyphus jujuba seeds were effective on the improvement of the blood glucose, lipid compositions in serum of dietary hyperlipidemic rats. And particularly, Zizyphus jujuba seeds were more effective as a therapeutic regimen for the control of metabolic derangements in adult disease.

Bio-oil production using residual sewage sludge after lipid and carbohydrate extraction

  • In order to maximize the utilization of sewage sludge, a waste from wastewater treatment facility, the residual sewage sludge generated after lipid and carbohydrate extraction for biodiesel and bioethanol production was used to produce bio-oil by pyrolysis. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that sludge pyrolysis mainly occurred between 200 and $550^{\circ}C$ (with peaks formed around 337.0 and $379.3^{\circ}C$) with the decomposition of the main components (carbohydrate, lipid, and protein). Bio-oil was produced using a micro-tubing reactor, and its yield (wt%, g-bio-oil/g-residual sewage sludge) increased with an increase in the reaction temperature and time. The maximum bio-oil yield of 33.3% was obtained after pyrolysis at $390^{\circ}C$ for 5 min, where the largest amount of energy was introduced into the reactor to break the bonds of organic compounds in the sludge. The main components of bio-oil were found to be trans-2-pentenoic acid and 2-methyl-2-pentenoic acid with the highest selectivity of 28.4% and 12.3%, respectively. The kinetic rate constants indicated that the predominant reaction pathway was sewage sludge to bio-oil ($0.1054min^{-1}$), and subsequently to gas ($0.0541min^{-1}$), rather than the direct conversion of sewage sludge to gas ($0.0318min^{-1}$).

Seasonal Changes in Biochemical Components of the Adductor Muscle, Digestive Diverticula and the Ovary in Chlamys farreri in Relation to the Ovarian Developmental Phases (비단가리비, Chlamys farreri의 난소 발달단계에 따른 폐각근, 난소 및 소화맹낭의 생화학적 성분의 계절적 변화)

  • We investigated the reproductive cycle with ovarian development of Chlamys farreri by histological observations, and seasonal changes in biochemical components of the adductor muscle, digestive diverticula and ovary were studied by biochemical analysis. The reproductive cycle of this species can be classified into five successive stages: early active stage (January to March), late active stage (March to April), ripe stage (April to August), partially spawned stage (June to August) and spent/inactive stage (August to January). According to ANOVA test, there were significant differences (p < 0.05) in total protein, total lipid and glycogen contents among months for all of the adductor muscle, digestive diverticula and ovary. Total protein contents in ovary and digestive diverticula showed significant changes (ANOVA, p < 0.05) during the study period, while that in the adductor muscle did not. Total protein content was highest in the adductor muscle, followed by ovary, and lowest in digestive diverticula. There was no correlation in total protein content between the adductor muscle and digestive diverticula (p = 0.220). But strong positive correlation was found between adductor muscle and ovary (r = 0.450, p = 0.013). ANOVA showed that there were significant differences in total lipid and glycogen contents among months for all of the adductor muscle, ovary, and digestive diverticula (p < 0.05). The monthly changes in total lipid content were highly variable in ovary and digestive gland. High contents of total lipid were found during April and May-June in ovary, while March and June-July in digestive diverticula. There was a strong negative correlation in total lipid content between ovary and digestive diverticula (r = -0.397, p = 0.030). Unlike total protein or total lipid, glycogen content in the adductor muscle was most dynamic. It showed more than 36-fold changes in the adductor muscle (at most 3-fold change in ovary) during the study period. Glycogen content was higher during May-July in the adductor muscle, while it was higher in March and August in digestive diverticula. There was a strong negative correlation in glycogen content between the adductor muscle and digestive diverticula (r = -0.584, p = 0.001).

  • This study was carried out to obtain fundamental data on the metabolism of hibernant fish loach, Misgurnus mizolepis. Main focus was on the compositon of muscle components and its changes in fresh - water loach before and after spawning season and before and after hibernation. Distributional changes of carbohydrate, protein and lipid in the muscle tissues were also investigated. Change patterns of miosture and crude protein, and moisture and crude lipid were in inversely proportional, i.e. : moisture amount showed the lowest value after spawnig season, the highest just after hibernation, but crude protein and crude lipid were the highest values after spawning season, and the lowest just after hibernation. Carbohydrate showed the highest value just before hibernation and tended to decrease thereafter. Muco layer of epidermis and muscle cell of hypodermis layer in loach were remarkable in its PAS dyeing degree after sapwning season, and it was presumed to include high percentage of protein or carbohydrate. Dermis layer became thinner before spawning hibernation. Lipid component in female tended to distribute relatively widely in the muscle cell layer before spawning season, but in case of male mainly in muco layer and epidermis layer. It appeared that lipid was spreaded mainly in epidermis and hypodermis tissue after spawning season, while it prevailed in almost all tissues but tended to decrease after hibernation.

Comparison of Lipid Components and Amino Acid Composition of Sea Eel by Size (붕장어의 크기에 따른 지방질성분 및 아미노산 조성의 비교)

  • This experiment was carried out to compare the difference of lipid components, amino acid composition by size of sea eel. Large sea eel(length 57.5-60.0cm, weight 269.5-300.0g) was higher in moisture and crude protein content, and lower in crude lipid content than those of small sea eel(28.8-31.2cm, 39.5-43.6g). Total lipid(TL) of large and small sea eel were consisted of 89.7%, 93.3% neutral lipid, 8.9%, 5.2% phospholipid, and 1.4%, 1.5% glycolipid, respectively. In fatty acid composition of TL, large fishes revealed higher content in polyunsaturated fatty acids such as 20:5, 22:5, 22:6, while lower in saturates and monoenes such as 16:0, 16:1, 18:1 than those of small fishes. The major fatty acids of these fishes were generally 18:1, 16:0, 22:6, 16:1 and 20:5 in order. Total amino acid contents of large and small sea eel were 17022.7mg/100g, 15409.4mg/100g. And the main amino acids were aspartic acid, glutamic acid, isoleucine, leucine, lysine, arginine. Large fishes was higher in cystine, methionine, tyrosine, phenylalanine content, while lower in aspartic acid, glutamic acid than those of small ones.

A Study on the Lipid Components of Silkworn Pupae (잠용의 지질성분(脂質成分)에 관(關)한 연구(硏究))

  • To study the composition of silkworm pupae oil, lipid of silkworm pupae was separated into two fractions, ether extractable and 85% methanol extractable, and the lipid components of each fraction were analyzed by using silicic acid column, thin layer chromatography and gas chromatography. Silkworm pupae contains 35.4% crude fat (dry-basis) of which consists 34.4% diethyl ether-extract and 0.9% of 85% methanolextract. The diethyl ether-extract contained 96.1% of neutral lipid, 2.9% of glycolipid and 1.0% of phospholipid while methanol-extract was consisted of 47.4% of neutral lipid, 14.6% of glycolipid and 38.1% of phospholipid. The major components of phospholipid were phosphatidyl glycol(41.0%), and phosphatidyl choline(28.2%) and phosphatidyl ethanolamine(21.2%) in the diethyl ether-extract and phosphatidyl glycol(48.4%), phosphatidyl inositol(22.8%) and phosphatidyl choline(17.9%) in the methanol-extract. The major fatty acids of the total lipid were oleic acid(33.5%), linolenic acid(31.0%) and palmitic acid(23.1%).
