Due to the development of compounding technology, there is a considerable increase in the number of high performance rubbers in the world. Accordingly, there are rapid growing requests about high performance tires such as UHP tire and Run-flat tire. However, it is extremely difficult to investigate the friction coefficient of tire tread rubbers. An alternative solution must be developed with the reliability of high-speed linear friction test machines. The use of friction test machines can be expected to improve rubber friction researches. In this paper, we propose a new kind of high-speed linear friction test machine. We have designed and manufactured various mechanisms for friction tests. The final goals are to design and manufacture friction test machines that can investigate friction coefficients efficiently and rapidly. The performance of the proposed high-speed linear friction test machine is evaluated experimentally; however additional study should be necessary for safer and more reliable experimentation.

In general, precise linear actuators using piezoelectric element are driven by friction force. Exact understanding of friction plays an important role in analysis and control of a motor. In this research, we designed a precise linear actuator using piezoelectric elements and observed its dynamic characteristics. By varying phase angle difference and amplitudes of the sinusoidal waves that are driving inputs, we can know that it is possible to control moving direction and distance of the slider. As preload is increased, its moving distance is decreased. And also, we have modeled a precise linear actuator using stick slip friction models such as classical, Karnopp. and reset integrator. Finally, by comparing the results of simulation and experiment, it was verified that the model is well designed.

A precision linear motion table plays a crucial role in manufacturing systems used in various industries such as machine tools, semiconductors, and nanofabrication. In particular, one of the most typical mechanisms for a linear motion table is to use a ballscrew and LM guides. However, this mechanism is inevitably influenced by friction because of the relative motion in its joint regions. One of the most complex phenomena in friction is the hysteresis behavior of dynamic friction, which was compared with the steady dynamic friction that was presented using a Stribeck curve in this study. Therefore, we investigated the dynamic friction and its hysteresis behavior using a miniaturized linear table equipped with a ballscrew and LM guides that were lubricated with grease. Subsequently, it could be seen that hysteresis could be considered a time delay after zero-velocity crossing and that it was influenced by acceleration.

This paper proposes a LuGre Model-Based Neural Network (MBNN) friction compensation algorithm for a linear motor stage. For matching the friction phenomena in both the motion-start region and the motion-reverse region, the LuGre dynamic model is employed into the proposed compensation algorithm. After training of the model-based neural network is completed, the estimated friction for compensation is obtained. From the obtained result we find that the new structure gains advantage over the non-friction compensation system on the performance of the compensator in both regions. The proposed compensator is evaluated and compared experimentally with an uncompensated system on a microcomputer controlled linear motor tracking system in the final section of the paper. The experimental results show the improvement on the maximum velocity error and the root mean square tracking error in the motion-start region ranges from 34% to 53% and from 53% to 75% respectively, and in the motion-reverse region from 48% to 65% and from 79% to 90% respectively.

There are various sources causing a position error in a linear motor. This paper focuses on error sources from rotational motions of a table and friction. Rotational errors occur due to imperfections during manufacturing and/or assembly of guide ways, and cause a position error at locations of interest. Friction is another factor deteriorating the position error due to its highly nonlinear behavior. The position error of the linear motor was about 20∼30$\mu\textrm{m}$. After compensating the position errors due to rotational error motions and friction. the remaining errors become about 6~8$\mu\textrm{m}$ and 2~3$\mu\textrm{m}$, respectively. It is shown that the positional accuracy of a linear can be greatly improved by compensating the two error sources.

The basic experimental was performed toward characteristic in pressure and flow rate in hydraulic system energy. The variable of friction torque was experiment on brake pressure variable using pneumatic brake system. The analysis of nonlinear friction and linear friction was perform ed toward friction characteristic of hydraulic system.

Linear motion (LM) ball guides have good accuracy and high efficiency. They are widely applied for precision machinery such as machine tools, semiconductor fabrication machines and robots. However, friction force incurs heat between the balls and grooves. Thermal expansion due to the heat deteriorates stiffness and accuracy of the LM ball guides. For accurate estimation of stiffness and accuracy during the linear motion, friction models of LM ball guides are required. To formulate accurate frictional models of LM ball guides according to load and preload conditions, rolling and viscous frictional analyses have been performed in this paper. Contact loads between balls and grooves are derived from Hertzian contact analysis. Contact angle variation is incorporated for the precision modeling. Viscous friction model is formulated from the shear stress of lubricant and the contact area between balls and grooves. Experiments confirm validity of the developed friction model for various external load and feedrate conditions.

The friction is one of the nonlinearities to be considered in the precise position control of a system which has electromechanical components. The friction has complicated nonlinear characteristics and depends on the velocity, the position and the time. The conventional fixed friction compensator and the controller based on linear control theory may cause the steady state position error or oscillation. The plant to be controlled in this study is a positioning system with a linear brushless DC motor(LBLDCM). The system behaves like a 4th-order model including the compliance and the friction. In this study, the plant model is simplified to a 2nd-order model to reduce the computation in on- line estimation. Also, to reduce the computation time, only the friction is estimated on-line while the mass and the viscous damping coefficient are fixed to the values obtained from off-line estimation. The validity of the proposed scheme is illustrated with the computer simulation and the experiment where the friction is compensated by using the estimation.
This Paper presents a positioning control method of the LBLDCM(Linear Brushless DC Motor) under friction. The friction may cause steady state position error. So it is necessary to consider friction effect for precision positioning control. The proposed control method uses disturbance observer algorithm and friction compensation. The experimental results of the proposed control method based on the disturbance observer are presented to show its effectiveness.

This paper dealt with friction-induced vibrations in engineering practice, specifically arising at the moment of counterturn of two friction surfaces. The harshness of the vibrations are attributed to the sharp change of the friction coefficients from kinetic to static near zero relative velocity, which is one of the examples of the stick slip. But the experimental results and numerical analysis of piston and cylinder operation showed that transition of the friction coefficient from kinetic to static is insignificant in vibrations. Dry friction itself dominates the harshness of vibrations. This study shows that how dry friction triggers the vibrations and demonstrates the effect of sharp transition from kinetic to static friction coefficient on the vibrations.
