Line to ground faults or lightning strikes in electrical power systems produce high frequency overvoltages. With this reason, a wide band analysis of the ground impedance is necessary. In the paper, design of a wideband ground impedance meter which can measure the ground impedance in ranges from 65 Hz to 1.5 MHz is described. Also, a noise elimination method by a digital band-pass filter during measurement is proposed. The maximum measurement error of the meter is estimated 3 % in full ranges.
This paper presents a discrete wavelet analysis based algorithm to address the fault impedance calculation under transient state in radial power distribution networks. The fault impedances have been derived under different fault conditions. Furthermore, a recursive fault distance estimation method is proposed utilizing the measured fault impedance and power line parameters. The proposed scheme can resolve the errors caused by the non-homogeneous power lines, the presence of lateral loads since, the fault impedance will always be updated with the recursive form. For the verification of the proposed scheme, a filed test has been peformed with varying fault resistances in the 22.9(kV) radial system. Power meters and fault locators were installed at the substation. It was figured out that the performance of the discrete wavelet and the recursive scheme are very good even for high fault resistance condition.
This paper analyzes impedance convergence characteristics and harmonics of electric locomotives operation and fault condition. To simulate the various fault and operation condition, AT feeding system and various locomotives are modeled using PSCAD/EMTDC. Analysis shows that impedance are converged into protection area in the case of short fault between catenary and rail or catenary and feeder line but in the case of disconnection fault, impedance is rater bigger so protective relay can't detect the fault. Therefore more analysis of overload and high impedance fault caused disconnection fault is needed.
The analysis of distribution line faults is essential to the proper protection of power system. A high impedance fault(HIF) dose not make enough current to cause conventional protective device operating, so it is well known that undesirable operating conditions and certain types of faults on electric distribution feeders cannot be detected by using conventional protection system. In this paper, we prove that the nature of the high impedance faults is indeed a deterministic chaos, not a random motion. Algorithms for estimating Lyapunov spectrum and the largest Lyapunov exponent are applied to various fault currents detections in order to evaluate the orbital instability peculiar to deterministic chaos dynamically, and fractal dimensions of fault currents which represent geometrical self-similarity are calculated. Wavelet transform analysis is applied the time-scale information to fault signal. Time-scale representation of high impedance faults can detect easily and localize correctly the fault waveform.
An accurate digital distance relaying algorithm which is immune to mutual coupling effect and reactance effect of the fault resistance and the load current for the line faults in 765kV untransposed transmission lines is proposed. The algorithm can estimate adaptively the impedance to a fault point independent of the fault resistance. To compensate the magnitude and phase of the apparent impedance, this algorithm uses the angle of an impedance deviation vector. The impedance correction algorithm for phase-to-ground fault and phase-to-phase short fault use a voltage equation at fault point to compensate the fault current at fault point. A series of tests using EMTP output data in a 765kV untransposed transmission lines have proved the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.
A motor model and off-line diagnosis method of the induction motor having an interturn fault(ITF) is studied. The proposed method is based on the magnitude comparison of the six impedance in the d-q plane. To prove the impedance unbalance, the induction motor model is presented with an ITF circuit loop with a fault resistance. Then, six impedance components in the stationary d-q plane are defined depending on the connected phase windings. Finding the maximum and minimum magnitude of the six impedance, the ITF and the faulty phase can be founded. To verify the proposed method, the experimental results with an induction motor having an ITF are shown.
In this paper, transmission lines with low and high characteristic impedance (Z$_{0}$) are fabricated and analyzed. The transmission lines are fabricated on the benzo-cyclo-butene (BCB) films of a low dielectric constant. For the low Z$_{0}$, two types of coplanar waveguide (CPW) structures are fabricated, which include bottom-ground and double-ground type. Measurement shows that Z$_{0}$ values for each CPW type are 7.3 and 9.4$\Omega$, respectively, at a signal line width of 100 #m. Whit the ratio between the spacing of bottom-ground and the signal line with becomes greater than 2.5, the Z$_{0}$ is nearly saturated. In addition, thin film microstrip lines fabricated using the BCB insertion layers show very low Z$_{0}$ of 25.5$\Omega$, and this impedance is ~64 % of the values obtained from the BCB-based CPW structures of the same line width. Measurement result of CPW on BCB layer is 100.5 Ω.s 100.5 Ω.
The occurrence of the ventricular fibrillation is directly dependent on the magnitude and duration of the current. The current which flows through the human body is proportional to the touch voltage applied across the body and is in inverse proportion to the impedances in the circuit. The circuit impedances consist of human body impedance, line impedance, equipment impedance, earth terminal impedance and impedance of shoes which a person put on. The impedance of shoes greatly affect the severity of the electric accidents. The human body impedances relevant to the contact areas, contact conditions, current paths and touch voltages are already determined in the IEC 60479-1. However, the impedance of shoes is ignored or substituted by a simple value because of the absence of the sufficient data. For example, the impedance of shoes plus ground contact resistance is postulated to be $1,000{\Omega}$ in the IEC 61200-612. In IEEE 80, the shoe resistance plus ground contact resistance is assumed to be bare foot with ${\rho}/4b{\Omega}$. In this paper, we measured and analyzed the impedance of shoes with respect to conditions such as applied weight, environment variables and voltages. The results showed that the impedance of shoes is dependent on environment variables regardless of the types of shoes. Most of shoes showed the correlation with the applied force, whereas a few shoes showed characteristics related to the applied voltage. In terms of severity of electric shock, one thirds of test samples indicated to be dangerous in saltwater conditions.
