  • This essay aims to suggest roughly the "philosophy of limits." The limits mainly refer to those of human experiences and rational thoughts. The philosophy of limits consist of three theses and two consequences(L, M). (1) The limits are necessarily supervenient in the course of searching knowledge. (2) The limits cannot be dissipated ultimately. (3) To recognize the limits is not only an intellectual recognition but also a beginning of whole personality's reaction. (L) It is a rational decision to accept the limits and leave the margins (yeoback/yeoheuck) rather than to try to remove them. (M) To leave the margins (yeoback/yeoheuck) is characteristic of being human, and enables one to harmoniously communicate with others. To justify the philosophy of limits, this essay examine the limits discussed in mathematics and philosophy: set theory, Godel's Incompleteness Theorem, Galois Theorem in mathematics; and Hume, Kant, Kierkegaard, and Wittgenstein in philosophy. I try to interpret consciousness of limits in various cultures. I claim that consciousness of the limits contribute to lucidity of human identity, communication between persons, stimulation of creative thinking.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the Limits of stability(LOS) in hemiplegic patients who can walking independently. The LOS was measured at stable surface, unstable surface with eye open and eye closed. In this study, 18 out-patients were evaluated who were treated at Yonsei University Medical Center Rehabilitation Hospital. In order to determine the statistical significance of results, T-test, paired t-test, and Kruskal-Wallis 1-way ANOVA were applied at 0.05 level of significance. The results were as follows: 1. The mean of lateral limits of stability was 9.89 degree. 2. The mean of anteroposterior limits of stability was 6.43 degree. 3. There was a significant difference of limits of stability between sound side and affected side(p<0.05). 4. The limits of stability was significantly decreased with eye closed(p<0.05) 5. The limits of stability was significantly decreased at unstable surface(p<0.05). 6. The limits of stability was a significant difference as spasticity degree of ankle plantar flexors(p<0.05). These results showed that the limits of stability in hemiplegic patients was more decreased than that of normal adult. In order to improve the balance in hemiplegic patients, we need to increase the limits of stability.

  • In Korea, the dose limits are reduced and are set at the ICRP-60 iimits. However, derived limits tabulated as MPC in air and water are still specified in Notice No.98-12. There are some discrepancies between the primary dose limits and MPCs in air and water. Therefore, in order to accept ICRP-60 recommendations fully, derived limits such as ALI, DAC, ECL for radiological protection against ionizing radiation based on ICRP-60 recommendations were calculated using modified methods of those of 10 CFR part 20, dose limits and committed effective dose coefficients of the Basic Safety Standards of the IAEA. The derived limits in this study were also compared with those prescribed in 10 CFR part 20 as well as MPCs of Notice No. 98-12 in order to analyze the impact of implementing derived limits on nuclear facilities. ECLs in air and water for the control of radioactive discharge into the environment in this study are shown to have lower values (i.e. more conservative), for most part, than those in Notice No. 98-12. Especially, for uranium elements, ECLs in water are approximately a magnitude in the order of two lower than those in Notice No.98-12.

  • Control charts are very useful tool for monitoring of process characteristics. This paper discusses the problem of design of control limits when the subgroups are composed by cluster sampling type. As an alternative method of design of control limits XbBar chart is proposed, which uses the control limits based on the variation between subgroups instead of using classical variation within subgroups. Two examples are presented for reasonable design of control limits and conditions of subgroups based on the cluster sampling. Through examples the guidelines for making proper control limits are proposed.

  • Intramolecular proton transfer equilibria of acetamide and methyl carbamate have been studied theoretically by MNDO MO method. For both substrates, carbonyl-O protonated tautomer was found to be the most stable form, the next most stable one being N-protonated form. Gas phase proton transfers take place by the 1,3-proton rearrangement process and in all cases have prohibitively high activation barriers. When however one solvate water molecule participates in the process, the barriers are lowered substantially and the process proceeds in an intermolecular manner through the intermediacy of the water molecule via a triple-well type potential energy surface; three wells correspond to reactant(RC), intermediate(IC) and product complex(PC) of proton donor-acceptor pairs whereas two transition states(TS) have proton-bridge structure. General scheme of the process can be represented for a substrate with two basic centers(heteroatoms) of A and B as, $$ABH\limits^+\;+\;H_2O\;{\to}\;ABH\limits^+{\cdots}{\limits_{RC}}OH_2\;{\to}\;AB{\cdots}H\limits_{TS}^+{\cdots}{\limits_{1}}OH_2\;{\to}\;AB{\cdots}{\limits_{IC}}H\limits^+OH_2\;{\to}\;BA{\cdots}H\limits_{TS}^+{\cdots}{\limits_{2}}OH_2\;{\to}\;BA H\limits^+{\cdots}{\limits_{PC}}OH_2\;{\to}\;BAH\limits^+\;+\;H_2O$$ Involvement of a second solvate water had negligible effect on the relative stabilities of the tautomers but lowered barrier heights by 5∼6 Kcal/mol. It was calculated that the abundance of the methoxy-O protonated tautomer of the methyl carbamate will be negligible, since the tautomer is unfavorable thermodynamically as well as kinetically. Fully optimized stationary points are reported.

  • We investigate the relation between the vector variable bi-additive functional equation $f(\sum\limits^n_{i=1} xi,\;\sum\limits^n_{i=1} yj)={\sum\limits^n_{i=1}\sum\limits^n_ {j=1}f(x_i,y_j)$ and the multi-variable quadratic functional equation $$g(\sum\limits^n_{i=1}xi)\;+\;\sum\limits_{1{\leq}i<j{\leq}n}\;g(x_i-x_j)=n\sum\limits^n_{i=1}\;g(x_i)$$. Furthermore, we find out the general solution of the above two functional equations.

  • In this paper, we establish a general solution of the following functional equation $$mf\({\sum\limits_{k=1}^{n}}x_k\)+{\sum\limits_{t=1}^{m}}f\({\sum\limits_{k=1}^{n-i_t}}x_k-{\sum\limits_{k=n-i_t+1}^{n}}x_k\)=2{\sum\limits_{t=1}^{m}}\(f\({\sum\limits_{k=1}^{n-i_t}}x_k\)+f\({\sum\limits_{k=n-i_t+1}^{n}}x_k\)\)$$ where m, n, t, it ∈ ℕ such that 1 ≤ t ≤ m < n. Also, we study Hyers-Ulam-Rassias stability for the generalized quadratic functional equation with n-variables and m-combinations form in quasi-𝛽-normed spaces and then we investigate its application.

  • We extend the work of A. Beauville on rank 2 vector bundles on a smooth curve in several directions. We give families of examples with large dimension, add new existence and non-existence results and prove the existence of indecomposable limits with arbitrary rank. To construct the large dimensional families we use the examples of limits of rank 2 trivial bundles on ℙ2 and ℙ3 due to C. Banica. We also consider a more flexible notion: limits of trivial bundles on nearby curves.
