  • The series connection-type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) with two magnetically coupled circuits was suggested and its effectiveness through the analysis on the current limiting and recovery characteristics was described. The fault current limiting characteristics of the proposed SFCL as well as the load voltage sag compensating characteristics according to the winding direction were investigated. To confirm the fault current limiting and the voltage sag suppressing characteristics of the this SFCL, the short-circuit tests for the simulated power system with the series connection-type SFCL were carried out. The series connection-type SFCL designed with the additive polarity winding was shown to perform more effective fault current limiting and load voltage sag compensating operations through the fast quench occurrence right after the fault appears and the fast recovery operation after the fault removes than that with the subtractive polarity winding.

  • Superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) provides the effect such as enhancement in power system reliability due to limiting fault current in a few miliseconds. The flux-lock type SFCL among various type SFCLs consists of two coils wound on the same iron core and a component using the YBCO thin film. In the SFCL, operation characteristics can be controlled by adjusting the inductances and the winding directions of the coils. In this paper, we investigated the various fault current limiting characteristics according to the voltage level. To analyze the current limiting performance, we compared operational characteristics on the subtractive polarity winding direction on in case of open-loop iron core.

But in order to anticipate increasing needs for effective and competitive device for limiting the growing fault current in electrical power systems, fault current limitation technologies and fault current limitation devices are widely introduced and investigated in these days. Fault current limiters are emerging electric equipment which is under development using various methods including superconducting fault current limiter, solid state fault current limiter, arc driving fault current limiters. And these various methods have some advantages and disadvantages to take into considerations In order to commercialize fault current limiters in the electrical networks, a lot of discussions should be given on the point that fault current limiting methods, need for fault current limiters, coordination with existing protective system, and field experience before commercialization. In this paper, recent trends of fault current limiting technologies will be reviewed and the key issues of superconducting fault current limiters will be dealt with. • In this paper, we investigated the variations of initial fault current limiting instant according to fault angles in the flux-lock type SFCL. The flux-lock type SFCL consists of the coil 1 and the coil 2 that are wound in parallel each other through an iron core. The operation of the flux-lock type SFCL can be divided into the subtractive polarity winding and the additive polarity winding operations according to the winding directions between the coil 1 and coil 2. The subtractive polarity winding operation could be analyzed with three modes. On the other hand, the additive polarity winding operation could be analyzed with five modes. The variations of initial fault current limiting instant in two winding directions were dependent on the fault angles. It was confirmed from experiment that the fault current limiting instant was getting faster and the magnitude of fault current at the initial fault time was getting higher for higher fault angle.

  • Due to large demand, the increase of fault current has caused the capacity of power machines in power grid to increase. Among several countermeasures, the superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) has been noticed as one of the promising countermeasures to solve these problems. However, in spite of excellent current limiting performances of the SFCL, the application of SFCL to power system has been delayed due to both the limited space for the SFCL's installation and its longer recovery time after the fault removal. In order to solve these problems, a hybrid type SFCL was developed. In this paper, we studied the operation characteristics of the hybrid SFCL with first half cycle non-limiting operation by modelling using PSCAD/EMTDC and experiment. It was shown through the simulation using PSCAD/EMTDC and the simulated experiment that the fault current limiting and the fast recovery operations of the hybrid SFCL with the first half cycle non-limiting operation were achieved.

  • When the current of the superconducting element exceeds its critical current by the fault occurrence, the quench of the high-$T_C$ superconducting fault current limiter (HTSC) comprising the flux-lock type superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) occurs. Simultaneously, the magnetic flux in the iron core induces the voltage in each coil, which contributes to limit the fault current. In this paper, the fault current limiting characteristics of the flux-lock type SFCL as well as the load voltage sag suppressing characteristics according to the flux-lock type SFCL's winding direction were investigated. To confirm the fault current limiting and the voltage sag suppressing characteristics of the this SFCL, the short-circuit tests for the simulated power system with the flux-lock type SFCL were carried out. The flux-lock type SFCL designed with the additive polarity winding was shown to perform more effective fault current limiting and load voltage sag suppressing operations through the fast quench occurrence right after the fault occurs and the fast recovery operation after the fault removes than the flux-lock type SFCL designed with the subtractive polarity winding.

  • A double line commutation (DLC) type SFCL with first peak limiting function has been proposed for ideal fault current limiting operation. Very fast switching (commutation) without any arc or high voltage problems for any kind of switching device is needed for the first peak current limiting. We've tried to find suitable conditions for a successful switching of a Vacuum Interrupter (VI) with HTS elements as a Peak Current limiting Resistance (PCR).

  • The superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) using magnetic coupling of two coils with series connection, which was suggested by us, has the merit to increase the operational current and the limiting impedance of the SFCL through the adjustment of the inductance ratio and the winding direction of two coils. In addition, the recovery characteristics of the SFCL is affected by the winding direction of two coils as well as two coils' inductance ratio. In this paper, the fault current limiting and recovery characteristics of a SFCL using magnetic coupling of two coils with series connection were analyzed. Through the analysis based on the experimental results, the recovery characteristics and the current limiting characteristics of the SFCL were confirmed to be improved more in case of the additive polarity winding.

  • In order to anticipate gradual increase of fault current in electric power systems, current limiting technology and current limiting device has been investigated for a long time. But the commercial use of current limiting device was delayed due to the lack of effective method to insert impedance to the elective power systems without loss and surplus defects. However, novel current limiting device, which use superconducting materials, was considered as a dream technology to be applied in a distribution and transmission lines. LG Industrial systems and KERPI started to investigate resistive type superconducting fault current limiters in order to develop 154kV fault current limiters and this year, we succeed to test 3 phase 6.6kV/200A fault current limiters. Based on these achievements, 24kV superconducting fault current limiters will be realized withing 3 years which could be tested in a real fields. In this paper, the developments of fault current limiting module which use YBCO thin films, cryogenic systems, the structure and construction of 3 phase fault current limiters and finally the test results of 6.6kV superconducting fault current limiters will be introduced.

  • The superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) can quickly limit the fault current shortly after the short circuit occurs and recover the superconducting state after the fault removes and plays a role in compensating the voltage sag of the sound feeder adjacent to the fault feeder as well as the fault current limiting operation of the fault feeder. Especially, the flux-lock type SFCL with an isolated transformer, which consists of two parallel connected coils on an iron core and the isolated transformer connected in series with one of two coils, has different voltage sag compensating and current limiting characteristics due to the winding direction and the inductance ratio of two coils. The current limiting and the voltage sag compensating characteristics of a SFCL using a transformer winding were analyzed. Through the analysis on the short-circuit tests results considering the winding direction of two coils, the SFCL designed with the additive polarity winding has shown the higher limited fault current than the SFCL designed with the subtractive polarity winding. It could be confirmed that the higher fault current limitation of the SFCL could be contributed to the higher load voltage sag compensation.
