Bifurcation intability modes of axially compressed circular cylindrical shell are investigated in the limit of zero thickness (i.e., h (thickness) ${\rightarrow}$ 0) analytically, adopting the general stability theory developed by Triantafyllidis and Kwon (1987) and Kwon (1992). The primary state of the shell is obtained in a closed form using the asymptotic technique, and then the straight-forward bifurcation analysis is followed according to the general stability theory to obtain the bifurcation modes in the limit of zero thickness in a full analytical manner. Hence, the closed form bifurcation solution is obtained. Finally, the result is compared with the classical one.
Let {$X_j,\;j\geq1$} be a strictly stationary $\phi$-mixing sequence of non-degenerate random variables with $EX_1$ = 0. In this paper, we establish a self-normalized weak invariance principle and a central limit theorem for the sequence {$X_j$} under the condition that L(x) := $EX_1^2I{|X_1|{\leq}x}$ is a slowly varying function at $\infty$, without any higher moment conditions.
The paper presents a numerical method for the limit analysis of structures made of a rigid no-tension material. Firstly, we formulate the constrained minimum problem resulting from the application of the kinematic theorem, which characterizes the collapse multiplier as the minimum of all kinematically admissible multipliers. Subsequently, by using the finite element method, we derive the corresponding discrete minimum problem in which the objective function is linear and the inequality constraints are linear as well as quadratic. The method is then applied to some examples for which the collapse multiplier and a collapse mechanism are explicitly known. Lastly, the solution to the minimum problem calculated via numerical codes for quadratic programming problems, is compared to the exact solution.
This study investigates the reliability of the performance levels of moment resisting steel frames subjected to lateral loads such as wind and earthquake. The reliability assessment has been performed with respect to three performance levels: serviceability, damageability, and ultimate limit states. A four-story moment resisting frame is used as a typical example. In the reliability assessment the uncertainties in the loadings and in the capacity of the frame have been considered. The wind and earthquake loads are assumed to have lognormal distribution, and the frame resistance is assumed to have a normal distribution. In order to obtain an appropriate limit state function a linear relation between the loading and the deflection is formed. For the reliability analysis an algorithm has been developed for determination of limit state functions and iterations of the first order reliability method (FORM) procedure. By the method presented herein the multivariable analysis of a complicated reliability problem is reduced to an S-R problem. The procedure for iterations has been tested by a known problem for the purpose of avoiding convergence problems. The reliability indices for many cases have been obtained and also the effects of the coefficient of variation of load and resistance have been investigated.
Nonlinear frictions which generate many problems in control system exist in almost all the servor control systems. In this paper, the design procedure which employs $H_\infty$ integral controller including two integrators with performance weight is proposed to improve performance of the control system. Limit cycles are unavoidable by the effect of interaction between two integrators and coulomb friction in these system. The describing function method is used to check the limit cycles and determine the coefficients of performance weights to minimize the effect of the limit cycles.
Necessary and sufficient conditions, under which there exists (at least) a sequence of vectors of real numbers for which the distribution function (d.f.) of any vector of extreme order statistics converges to a non-degenerate limit, are derived. The interesting thing is that these conditions solely depend on the univariate marginals. Moreover, the limit splits into the product of the limit univariate marginals if all the bivariate marginals of the trivariate d.f., from which the sample is drawn, is of negative quadrant dependent random variables (r.v.'s). Finally, all these results are stated for the multivariate extremes with arbitrary dimensions.
In order to characterize the macroscopic mechanical response of ultra-thin (0.1 mm thick) ferritic stainless steel sheet at various loading paths, a crystal plasticity finite element method (CP-FEM) was introduced. The accuracy of the prediction results was validated by comparing with the experimental data. Based on the results, the forming limit diagram (FLD) was predicted using a modified Marchinicak-Kuczinski model coupled to a non-quadratic anisotropic yield function, namely, Yld2000-2d. The predicted FLD was found to be in good agreement with the experimental data.
The purpose of this study is to predict the forming limit diagram (FLD) of strain-rate sensitive materials on the basis of the Marciniak and Kuczynski (M-K) theory. The strain-rate effect is taken into consideration in such a way that the stress-strain curves for various strain-rates are inputted into the formulation as point data, not as curve-fitted models such as power function. To solve the nonlinear system of equations derived from the equilibrium and constraints in the groove region and the safe zone, the Newton-Raphson method is used. The theoretical FLDs using four different yield criteria, that are von Mises, Hill (1948), Hill (1979), Logan and Hosford, are compared with the experimental, numerical (FEA) and other theoretical results. A new trial is made where a modified M-K model having n-step grooves is introduced to describe a real localized neck.
Resonance effects and nonlinear frictions which generate many problems in control system exist in almost all the servo system. therefore, In this paper, the design procedure which employs $H_{\infty}$ control theory after augmenting with two integrators is proposed to track the ramp input. Limit cycles are unavoidable by the effect of interaction between two integrators and Coulomb friction in these system. The describing function is used to check the limit cycles and decide the coefficients of two integrators to minimize the effect of the limit cycles.
This research focused on deciding optimal manufacturing WIP (Work-In-Process) limit for a small production system. Reducing WIP leads to stable capacity, better manufacturing flow and decrease inventory. WIP is the one of the important issue, since it can affect manufacturing area, like productivity and line efficiency and bottlenecks in manufacturing process. Several approaches implemented in this research. First, two strategies applied to decide WIP limit. One is roulette wheel selection and the other one is elite strategy. Second, for each strategy, JIT (Just In Time), CONWIP (Constant WIP), Gated Max WIP System and CWIPL (Critical WIP Loops) system applied to find a best material flow mechanism. Therefore, pull control system is preferred to control production line efficiently. In the production line, the WIP limit has been decided based on mathematical models or expert's decision. However, due to the complexity of the process or increase of the variables, it is difficult to obtain optimal WIP limit. To obtain an optimal WIP limit, GA applied in each material control system. When evaluating the performance of the result, fitness function is used by reflecting WIP parameter. Elite strategy showed better performance than roulette wheel selection when evaluating fitness value. Elite strategy reach to the optimal WIP limit faster than roulette wheel selection and generation time is short. For this reason, this study proposes a fast and reliable method for determining the WIP level by applying genetic algorithm to pull system based production process. This research showed that this method could be applied to a more complex production system.
