  • In this paper, we look into a Jong Nang Channel which is the origin of digital communications and has been used in Jeju Island since AD 1234. It is one kind of communication ways which informs people of whether a house owner is in one's house or not using its own protocol. It is comprised of three timber and two stone pillars whose one side has three holes respectively. In this paper, we analyze the Jong-Nang Channel both in the light of logic and bit error probability. In addition, we compare it with a conventional binary erasure channel when some errors occur over them respectively. We also show that a capacity of NOR channel approaches Shannon limit.

  • Capillaria hepatica (syn. Calodium hepatica) is a parasite found mainly in rodent liver. But, it has also been found in a wide variety of mammals, including humans. This worm is unique as it is the only nematode parasite that is embedded in the liver parenchyma of the host even during the adult stage of the life cycle. They produce eggs that elicit a marked granulomatous reaction that eventually destroys the worms. Fibrosis and lymphoplasmacytic inflammatory infiltration are often observed around adult nematodes embedded in the liver parenchyma of the host. For this reason, complete isolation of this slender worm and observation of the intact ultrastructure is very difficult. In this study, 10 intact whole worms (C. hepatica) were isolated from the liver of 3-week-old mouse after inoculation of artificially embryonated eggs collected from house rats (Rattus norvegicus). Their external structure of was observed with light and scanning electron microscopy. The length of the isolated female and male C. hepatica was approximately 69.60 mm and 36.92 mm, respectively. More detailed ultrastructure, including bacillary band, eggs and vulva in female and spicule and spicule sheath in male C. hepatica was also described.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the design principles of organic integration on furniture design by Frank Lloyd Wright. He consistently pursued organic principles in interior design, furniture and equipments. He insisted that every elements of a building can be integrated into architecture as if architecture can be a part of the nature. The study surveyed and analyzed the examples of furniture design in Wright houses from the viewpoints of spacial and formal integration as well as organic evolution. The study finds the characteristics of organic integration on furniture design as follows. He designed built-in furniture as an important part of the house, which seemed to grow up from the architecture design and a part of a building. He also designed and arranged free-standing furniture as spacial device in open floor plan. Moreover, furniture design repeated same geometry, modules, and proportion system of house design in order to integrate Into the building. In addition, material and color of furniture follow those of architecture. Wright's furniture design had changed from heavy forms in his early prairie houses to light and practical shapes in his Usonian period.

  • Recently, the structure system for apartment buildings in Korea has been changing from wall to post-beam structure. This study examines the fire resistance and sound insulation of light-weight dried wall, a component of post-beam structure. For the fire resistance and sound insulation in Korea, the Compartment wall of apartment house in the case of building regulation has regulations specify the detailed requirement of fire compartment walls in apartment, but do not specify that of interior walls. This study proposes the fire resisting rate of the interior wall into three grades in which the highest grade requires fire resistance of 30 minutes and also proposes the requirement of sound insulation performance into three grades in which the lowest grade requires 35dB.

  • Current interest in ${\gamma}$-aminobutyric acid (GABA) has arisen from the convergence of several independent line of investigation leading to the demonstration that this and related substances are normal products of brain metabolism and that GABA has an important physiological action upon brain function as well as upon certain peripheral nervous structures. The interest for neurophysiologists has been enhanced by the importance of the discovery for the role of humoral mediator of synaptic transmission or regulator of neuronal activity in the central nervous system, particularly if it may shed some elight upon the nature of central inhibitory processes. In accordance with such an interest and importance, this work was performed in order to standardize the normal content as a preliminary investigation of so-called night active and daytime active animals GABA content in their brains when they are exposed to light and darkness. The method, through which the estimation has made in this work, was paper chromatographic method developed by Maynert and Klingman for the estimation of GABA content in animal tissues. The results obtained are summerized as follows: 1) GABA content in the cerebral cortex of house rat ranged from 90 to $310{\mu}g/gm$ of wet weight. 2) The content of GAGA ranging from 130 to $510{\mu}g/gm$ of wet weight was occurred from midbrain of the rat. 3) GABA content was ranged from 30 to $150 {\mu}g/gm$ of wet weight of the rat cerebellum. 4) The contents of fowl cerebral cortex, midbrain, and cerebellum are estimated as ranging 230-590, 250-620, $50-280{\mu}g/gm$ of wet weight, respectively. As a result, it may be concluded that among three brain tissues of both animals the midbrain is the highest region in GABA content. Fowl brain, on the other side, contains more higher GABA content than the house rat brain does.

  • This study aims to develop a multi-functional cage for dogs as a house to reduce their anxiety when they go out using cages. This study investigates the types and characteristics of cages and cage preference by surveying men and women in their 20s who use them. The cage product reviews are also analyzed. The research results are as follows: First, domestic dog cages are classified into crate, shoulder, cross (sling bag), backpack, carrier, and stroller types. The crate type is easy to clean and can be used as a house, but it is bulky and therefore inconvenient to carry when using public transportation. The shoulder type is a fabric material with good air permeability but has the disadvantage of being easily soiled. It can be used as a house and is light weight, making it convenient when using public transportation. Second, as a result of consumer research, respondents prefer the shoulder-type fabric over the crate-type plastic material. Third, from the shoulder-type product review, the shape stability, companion dogs' psychological safety, the wearability of companions, and management convenience are derived. Fourth, based on the survey results, a multi-functional cage is developed taking into account the companion dog, companion person, and functional factors.

  • This research was carried out to evaluate and raise the energy efficiency of wood frame house. The commercial solution program CE3 (Construction Energy Efficiency Evaluation) was used for simulating the energy consumption in the single-family wood frame house. The results showed that the annual heating energy demand of the house was 160 kWh per 1 $m^2$ floor area. In order to decrease the heating energy demand, the following energy efficiency methods were applied to the simulation : a) simplification of building shape, b) decrease of windows area, c) application of high performance windows (with low thermal transmittance) and d) application of heat recovery ventilator. In case of replacement of the windows with high performance one with thermal transmittance 1 $W/m^2{\cdot}K$, the lowest heating demand of 80 $kWh/m^2{\cdot}a$ was obtained. The best combination of methods, application of high performance windows and heat recovery ventilator, showed heating energy demand 34.5 $kWh/m^2{\cdot}a$.

  • Pleurotus eryngii(King oyster) is one of the most promising mushrooms produced on the domestic farms. The quality as well as quantity of Eryngii is sensitively affected by micro climate factors such as temperature, relative humidity, $CO_2$ concentration, and light intensity. To safely produce high-quality Eryngii all the year round, it is required that the environmental factors be carefully controlled by well designed structures equipped with various facilities and control systems. At the commercial mushroom cultivation house(A,B), this study was carried out to find out reasonable range of each environmental factor and yield together with economic and safe structures influencing on the optimal productivity of Eryngii. this experiment was conducted for about two-month from Nov. 11, 2002 to Dec. 30, 2002 in Eryngii. cultivation house-A, B. Ambient temperature during the experiment period was not predominantly different from that of a normal year. The capacity of the hot water boiler and the piping systems were not enough. Maximum air temperature difference between the upper and lower growth stage during a heating time zone was about 2~3$^{\circ}C$. The max. and min. relative humidity were ranged approximately 60~100%, and average relative humidity was ranged approximately 80~100%. And $CO_2$concentration increased until maximum 1,600~1,800 ppm with the passing growing period. The illuminance in cultivation house was widely distributed from 20lx to 160 lx in accordance with position, and it was maintained lower than the recommended illuminance range 100~200 lx. The average yield per bottle was about 67~85g. But the optimal productivity will be evaluated by considering the quality and quantity of mushroom production, energy requirements, facility construction and management cost, etc.

  • Green houses provide a more conditioned and warmer environment than the outside environment due to insulation. Currently used insulation materials include soft film (PVC, PE, EVA), foamed PE sheet, non-woven fabric, reflective film, and multi-layer insulation curtain, but there are many disadvantages and to compensate for this, silica aerogel insulation material with excellent warmth, light weight, and small volume Research using is in progress. In this study, the temperature change of the quadruple-structure green house and the temperature change in the dual-structure green house of soft film and silica airgel were investigated. The daytime temperature change was highest in A and A2 (soft film) at 10 to 16:00 after sunrise, but showed the lowest temperature at 17 to 18:00, which is the sunset time, showing the greatest change. The airgels of D and D2 showed the smallest change in temperature after sunrise and right after sunset. That is, it can be said that the airgel is hardly affected by external temperature. The temperature change at night was highest in D and D2 (aerogel) for both quadruple and dual structures. The temperature at night was measured higher in the quadruple structure than in the double structure. As for the ratio of the internal temperature to the external temperature for the quadruple structure and the double structure, D (aerogel) was not affected by the external temperature during the day in the quadruple structure and the double structure. D (Aerogel) seems to be able to reduce the damage caused by high temperatures in summer due to the high thermal insulation effect of the airgel, as the temperature rises above 4℃ at night. And in winter, it helps to save heating costs due to less heat emitted to the outside.

  • BACKGROUND: Plastic mulches widely used in raised-bed culture mainly to conserve water, control weeds and raise soil temperature. The most widely used plastic mulch colour is black. Reflective red and far-red light can affect on growth and yield of various vegetable crops. Objectives of this study were to investigate the characteristics of reflective light of black and red plastic mulches, and to evaluate the reflective red and far-red light on the quality characteristics and yield of the Oriental melon (Cucumis. Melo L.) and tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum L.). METHODS AND RESULTS: Oriental melon and tomato were cultivated over the reflective red and black plastic mulches in plastic house. Reflected red and far-red light over the red plastic mulch were 2.6 times higher than those of black plastic mulch. Red to F-Red ratio of black plastic mulch, red plastic mulch and sunlight were 1.14, 0.93 and 1.16 respectively. Intensity of reflected red and far-red light over red plastic mulch were highest at surface height of 30 cm. The higher the height of the surface decrease the intensity of far-red light. Accordingly, Red to F-Red ratio were increased. Reflective red plastic mulch increased the weight of fruit and content of sugar in Oriental melon and tomato. CONCLUSION(s): Yield of Oriental melon over reflective red plastic mulch was higher than that of black plastic mulch. These results suggested that reflected red and far-red light over the red plastic mulch affected allocation of photosynthate in growing Oriental melon.
